In this presentation at the 17th Multidimensional Chromatography Workshop, Kevin Hayes investigated how aircraft oils change during engine operation and whether these changes could contribute to occupational exposure risks for flight crews and maintenance personnel. The study focused on comparing fresh and used oils from piston, turboprop, and jet aircraft to better understand how inorganic and organic contaminants accumulate or are depleted during normal engine operation.The research combined routine multi-element analysis using ICP-OES with advanced GC×GC-TOFMS speciation analysis. Used piston and turboprop oils were collected with assistance from the MRU Aviation Program, while used jet oil samples were obtained from a private European jet operator. Elemental analysis showed significant differences between new and used oils. In piston engine oils, sulfur and lead concentrations increased substantially during use, with lead accumulation linked to tetraethyl lead (TEL) from 100LL aviation fuel. Phosphorus compounds were also detected in used oils despite not being present in the fresh oil samples, indicating additional contributions from operational processes or additives.For jet and turboprop oils, phosphorus-containing additives behaved differently. Fresh oils contained relatively high phosphorus concentrations, but these levels decreased significantly after engine operation, suggesting additive depletion or release of phosphorus-containing compounds during use. The authors highlighted that this may be particularly relevant for bleed-air systems in commercial aircraft, where oil-derived compounds could potentially enter cabin air. GC×GC-TOFMS analysis further identified several organophosphate compounds in piston engine oils. Interestingly, commonly discussed compounds such as tricresyl phosphate (TCP) were not detected, while other organophosphates were observed instead, demonstrating the importance of comprehensive speciation analysis rather than focusing solely on previously suspected contaminants.The presentation concluded that aircraft engine oils undergo substantial chemical changes during normal operation, with both inorganic and organic compounds accumulating or being depleted in ways that are not captured by analyses of unused oils alone. While elemental analysis provided valuable first-level insight into wear metals and additive behavior, GC×GC-TOFMS delivered critical molecular-level information about specific contaminant classes and transformation products. Together, the results suggest that current hazard assessments based only on fresh oils may underestimate potential occupational exposure risks and demonstrate the value of combining elemental analysis with advanced multidimensional chromatography for a more complete understanding of aircraft oil-related exposure pathways.<h3>2. Total organic carbon (TOC) measurement is widely used to detect water quality degradation caused by microbial growth and contamination with foreign substances.&nbsp;Solid powder chloroisocyanuric acids (including dichloroisocyanuric acid and trichloroisocyanuric acid), which exhibit minimal chlorine deactivation, are commonly used as disinfectants for swimming pool water instead of sodium hypochlorite solutions. However, because chlorinated isocyanuric acid is a recalcitrant substance, it is challenging to detect using wet oxidation TOC analyzers due to itsresistance to oxidation and decomposition. In contrast, a combustion oxidation TOC analyzer can measure chloroisocyanuric acids with high sensitivity and recovery rates due to itsstrong oxidizing power. In this application, we compared the TOC measurement results for sodium dichloroisocyanurate using a combustion oxidation <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=TOC-LCPH">TOC-LCPH</a> analyzer and a wet oxidation <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=TOC-VWP">TOC-VWP</a> analyzer.<h4>Conclusion</h4>The combustion oxidation TOC analyzer demonstrated high accuracy in measuring the samples. FTIR spectrophotometers are commonly used for qualitative analysis of polymers. In particular, the ATR (attenuated total reflectance) method is widely used because measurements can be performed simply and quickly by clamping a sample against a prism to ensure close contact.&nbsp;While the ATR method makes it relatively easy to discriminate between different types of polymers, clear differences may not appear when analyzing similar polymers—for example, when there are only slight differences in the type or content of additives or the thermal histories during manufacturing. In such cases, differences may be confirmed by using thermal analysis instruments, such as a DSC or TG-DTA system.&nbsp;This article describes an example in which three instruments— an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=IRSpirit-TX">IRSpirit-TX</a> FTIR spectrophotometer, a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=DSC-60+Plus">DSC-60 Plus</a> differential scanning calorimeter, and a DTG-60 simultaneous DTA-TG unit (Fig. 1)—were used to confirm differences among six microsamples of polypropylene (PP) resin.<h4>Conclusion</h4>Details of the six types of PP resin identified from the above measurement results are shown in Table 4. The results indicate that by using an FTIR spectrophotometer in combination with thermal analysis equipment, such as DSC and TG-DTA systems, it is possible to distinguish between minute amounts of the same type of resin with various different properties.<h3>3. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is an established tool in solar cell research due to its ability to provide extremely surface-sensitive information about elemental composition along with chemical and electronic states.¹ XPS is ultimately a surface analysis technique, however, and in order to assess the full composition of complex, multi-layered structures such as solar cells, a technique known as depth profiling is necessary, which performs multiple rounds of successive material removal and analysis.&nbsp;This application note explores a recent study by Chandler et al. that focuses on solar cells designed for aerospace applications,² where accurate determination of the “true” starting composition of the stacks is essential for tests that simulate space conditions, such as radiation exposure. Without a reliable baseline, it becomes impossible to distinguish between changes induced by the experimental conditions and artifacts introduced during analysis. Conventional ion beam sputtering methods used for depth profiling are known to distort chemical information for perovskites; femtosecond laser ablation (fs-LA) is presented as a novel, alternative method that helps to preserve vital chemical information.<h4>Experimental</h4>A halide-perovskite-based solar cell was fabricated on an ITO/SnO₂ substrate using a spin coating method; the structure of the layers is shown in Figure 1.Analysis was performed with the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products/2206">Thermo Scientific™ Hypulse™ Surface Analysis System</a>, which is equipped with both traditional ion-beam sputtering and femtosecond-laser ablation capabilities. XPS data was collected in SnapShot acquisition mode using an X-ray spot size of 30-200 µm, depending on the method of depth profiling.&nbsp;A MAGCIS ion gun was employed for the sputter depth profiles, generating either a 500 eV monatomic Ar⁺ beam or 8 keV Ar₁₅₀⁺ clusters. The fs-LA depth profiles were generated using a 1,030 nm wavelength laser operating at a 160 fs pulse length. The pulse energy was increased from 42 µJ to 167 µJ when transitioning from the perovskite layer into the substrate structure. A flood gun was employed for charge neutralization during profiling.<h4>Summary&nbsp;</h4>This study confirms the challenges associated with traditional ion sputtering (both monatomic and cluster) for the depth profiling of perovskite-based solar cells. These methods cause preferential sputtering, particularly of lighter elements like carbon, nitrogen, and iodine, which distorts elemental ratios in the profiles and results in artificial signals, such as the formation of metallic lead (Pb⁰). Depth profiling with femtosecond laser ablation represents a novel and robust alternative that preserves the original chemical composition and oxidation states throughout the perovskite layer. By avoiding preferential removal effects, accurate compositional information is maintained during the profile, and erroneous peak signals associated with chemical reduction are eliminated. These factors are vital in establishing a chemically undisturbed baseline before performing tests that simulate environmental effects on the solar cells.&nbsp;With fs-LA depth profiling, any induced changes can be confidently delineated from analytical artifacts, and researchers can better understand and mitigate environmental effects on solar-cell performance, eventually leading to improved solar technologies for aerospace applications.

Agilent Technologies: Analysis of Soil and Sediments by ICP-MS with Advanced Sample Introduction Tools</h3>Simplified sample preparation enabled by the Agilent Mira Mist Nebulizer and an In-Line Particle Filter<ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_enviro_soil_sample_prep_9500_icp_qqq_5994_9126en_agilent_8299f007e9.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>ICP-MS is widely employed for monitoring inorganic elements in soil and sediments, with established methods such as US EPA 6020B providing a validated framework for the accurate, multi‑element analysis of environmental samples.1 In a separate study, we demonstrated the outstanding performance capabilities of the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=9500">Agilent 9500 Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS</a> (ICP-QQQ) in compliance with EPA 6020B requirements.2 The instrument, which includes the Ultra High Matrix Introduction (UHMI) system for enhanced plasma stability and robustness, employed Advanced Helium Mode (AHM) and Air cell mode to achieve lower limits of detection (LODs) compared to conventional cell gas approaches.3,4The two collision/reaction cell (CRC) modes of operation were enabled by the Agilent Dual-Cell System (DCS) —a unique CRC that provides the following performance advantages when operated in AHM and Air cell mode: – AHM – This innovative He-based gas collision-cell mode significantly enhances sensitivity for low-mass analytes while providing robust interference removal across the entire mass range. – This single gas mode eliminates the need for multiple modes, replacing no gas, conventional He, and high energy (HE) He mode. – Air cell mode – Using oxygen (O2 ) from air and an integrated air filter for the 9500 ICP-QQQ, Air cell mode leverages reactions between O2 and analytes to improve detection limits (DLs) for oxygen-reactive species. – Air cell mode effectively eliminates interferences, including M++ that are challenging to resolve using He-based gas methods.5 – With an unlimited supply of O2 in air, Air cell mode eliminates the need for O2 gas cylinders, reducing operating costs and simplifying workflows.Of all the ICP-MS nebulizers, the Agilent Mira Mist nebulizer offers the best resistance to concentrated acids and organic solvents. Its parallel path design ensures good tolerance to high levels of particulates and total dissolved solids (TDS), providing excellent resistance to clogging. In this study, the 9500 ICP-QQQ equipped with an in-line particle filter and Mira Mist nebulizer was used to determine trace and major elements in five environmental certified reference materials (CRMs) and a real sediment sample. The performance of the method was evaluated according to criteria set out in EPA Method 6020B.<h4>Experimental&nbsp;</h4><h5>Instrumentation&nbsp;</h5>All measurements were performed using an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=9500">Agilent 9500 ICP-QQQ</a> that includes the following standard components: nickel (Ni) interface cones and newly designed DCS cell. The design features and functionality of the 9500 and DCS are explained elsewhere.3,4 The 9500 was also equipped with the optional Agilent Advanced Valve System (AVS&nbsp;MS) discrete sampling system for improved productivity. The AVS&nbsp;MS system’s high-speed piston pump works seamlessly with the Agilent SPS 4 and SPS&nbsp;6 autosamplers for sample delivery, ensuring the high sample throughput necessary to meet the operational needs of most environmental testing laboratories.To optimize signal stability with the Mira Mist nebulizer, the nebulizer pump speed was adjusted and a makeup gas was introduced (Table 1). In the 9500 ICP-QQQ, both the makeup gas and dilution gas can be added, enabling finer control of the plasma gas flow rates to optimize signal %RSD within the target sensitivity zone. The lens parameters were set automatically using the Autotune function in the software. The in-line filter’s internal volume is sufficiently small that its presence does not influence AVS MS sample introduction timing or method parameters. As a result, the same settings were used with and without the filter installed (Table 2).<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>In this study, sediment samples were analyzed in accordance with EPA Method 6020B using the Agilent 9500 ICP‑QQQ with UHMI and the optional AVS MS. The system was equipped with advanced sample introduction components, including the Mira Mist nebulizer and an in‑line particle filter.&nbsp;The combination of the Mira Mist nebulizer and in-line filter enabled the analysis of sediment digests without a dedicated filtration step, reducing sample preparation time and consumable costs. At the same time, the configuration minimized the risk of sample introduction blockages, supporting robust and reliable long-term ICP-QQQ operation for complex environmental matrices.Overall, the 9500 ICP-QQQ with the Mira Mist nebulizer and the in-line particle filter achieved excellent analytical data:&nbsp;<ul><li>Low detection limits in the low ng/L (ppt) range for most analytes&nbsp;</li><li>The same or similar washout efficiency of sticky elements as a standard sample introduction configuration&nbsp;</li><li>The same sample introduction timing, regardless of whether the filter was installed or not&nbsp;</li><li>Method robustness and reproducibility over more than eight hours of continuous measurements, as demonstrated by the recoveries of ISTDs and CCVs within the limits specified in EPA Method 6020B&nbsp;</li><li>Recoveries of all certified elements in the five environmental CRMs, matrix spike sample, and spiked real sediment sample within ±10%, confirming the effective control of interferences using AHM and Air cell mode&nbsp;</li></ul>The study has highlighted how the 9500 ICP-QQQ with the Mira Mist nebulizer and in‑line particle filter enhances sample preparation efficiency and analytical performance for the analysis of complex sediment digests.<h3>2. Although some of these elements are highly toxic, there are cases in which it is difficult to distinguish them at an early stage because they lack specific symptoms of poisoning. Therefore, analytical methods for rapid screening of these elements are required in forensic research.&nbsp;Inorganic elements are generally analyzed by ICP-AES or ICP-MS. Although these techniques allow trace-level quantitation, they require chemical pretreatment such as dilution and deproteinization, and the samples are limited to liquid specimens. In contrast, energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (EDXRF - <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=EDX-7200">EDX-7200</a>) offers sufficient sensitivity in the concentration range associated with poisoning and enables simple, non-destructive analysis in a short time.&nbsp;This application describesthe results of quantitative analysis of 15 elements in urine by the calibration curve method, and qualquantitative analysis by the FP (Fundamental Parameter) method based on sensitivity coefficients installed in the instrument. The errors in the quantitative values obtained by the FP-based qualquantitative analysis method were approximately ±20 %, indicating that sufficient quantitative accuracy was achieved. Screening can be performed within 10 minutes persample.<h4>Conclusion</h4>The FP method demonstrated high accuracy for quantitation without calibration curves. Furthermore, urine samples do not require complicated pretreatment such as protein removal, and the analysis time is as short as approximately 10 minutes per sample. This method is well suited for poisoning screening in forensic research.<h3>3. It is important to accurately analyze these materials to confirm compliance of their chemical specifications that imply physical properties, like conductivity, compressive strength, hardness, resistance to traction and to abrasion. High product quality and efficient production can be ensured with accurate analysis results. Copper alloys Pure copper is mixed with other elements to produce a wide range of alloys: Brasses (Cu-Zn), bronzes (Cu-Sn), gun metal (Cu-Sn-Zn) used for casting due to its excellent fluidity, for valves, taps and water fittings. Manganese bronzes (Cu-Zn-Mn) are not true bronzes as Sn is not the essential constituent. Used for rudders, propellers, and ship fittings. Cupro-nickel (Cu-Ni) used for coins, tubes, wires, electrical resistances, and thermocouples. Nickel silver (Cu-Ni-Zn) used for marine applications, car radiators and fittings.&nbsp;<h4>Brass&nbsp;</h4>One of the most important non-ferrous engineering alloys. It covers a large range of physical properties with multiple applications. Copper can hold about 39% of zinc in solid solution. Alloys containing less than 39% Zn are known as α-brasses. This brass (70/30) is very widely employed for cartridge, cases, condenser tubes, etc. From 39% to 46% of Zn, a β-solid solution gives αβ-brass. This alloy (60/40) is found in extensive engineering applications with enhanced corrosion resistance used in marine applications. Alloys containing more than 49% Zn are very hard and only used for brazing brasses.<h4>Instrument parameters and conditions&nbsp;</h4>The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products/1978">ARL X900 XRF Spectrometer</a> can accommodate up to 24 fixed monochromator channels alongside the goniometer or up to 32 fixed monochromator channels when no goniometer is fitted. New high counting fixed channel monochromators using an SCX detector are available to further improve the precision of analysis, especially for elements like Cu, Zn and Ni.Our unique proprietary Moiré fringe goniometer ensures speed, flexibility and reliability of analysis thanks to the clever frictionfree positioning system. Up to nine crystals and four collimators can be fitted. Calibrations can be delivered from the factory, hence reducing the commissioning time at the customer’s site.&nbsp;It should be stressed that an XRF spectrometer is a very accurate comparator, but the accuracy of the final analysis is entirely dependent on the quality of the standards used for calibration and on the care and reproducibility of sample preparation which must be identical for CRMs and for routine samples as well.This application note only includes data obtained mostly on fixed channels and on some goniometer channels. For more results using goniometer channels please refer to AN41426.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>Analysis of all sorts of copper alloys can be performed with ease using the ARL X900 Simultaneous-Sequential XRF Spectrometer. The performance of the Moiré fringe goniometer is such that it can be used for analysis of any elements that are not fitted as fixed channels. The analysis on the goniometer is done while the fixed channels are measuring. In addition, it can be used as a backup in case of failure of any of the fixed channels.&nbsp;Appropriate calibrations for copper alloys can be delivered turnkey from the Thermo Fisher Scientific factory. Owing to their distinct physical and chemical properties, engineered nanoparticles are incorporated into a wide range of products to enhance performance or functionality. At the same time, they are increasingly recognized as potential contaminants or pollutants. In the semiconductor industry, for example, even single-digit nanometer-sized sNPs present in process chemicals can cause electrical shorting to occur and reduce product yield. Although the effects of sNPs on environmental and biological systems are still being investigated, researchers have developed methods to determine sNPs using single particle-ICP-MS (spICP-MS).1 Agilent ICP-MS instruments are widely used to characterize sNPs because of their fast-scanning multi-element capability, ultra-high sensitivity, low background, and integrated data analysis software.2-5sNPs are decomposed, atomized, and ionized in the high-energy ICP. Any ions that are generated from a particle enter the vacuum chamber as ion clusters and are then detected as transient signal peaks above the background signal. The signal from each sNP event usually lasts between 400 and 1,300 µs. To detect this short-lived signal with high resolution, a fast time-resolved analysis (fast-TRA) acquisition is employed. Typically, a default dwell time of 100 µs is used. However, if higher peak resolution is required, the Agilent 9500 Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS (ICP-QQQ) can be operated with a dwell time as low as 50 µs. During the development of the 9500 ICP-QQQ, improvements to the instrument’s hardware enabled reliable control of TRA at much shorter timing intervals. These enhancements enable the 9500 to operate with high stability at a 50&nbsp;µs dwell time, making it an effective instrument for high-resolution sNP analysis. The robust plasma of Agilent ICP-MS instruments, as indicated by a CeO+ /Ce+ ratio &lt; 1%, also reduces matrix effects between standards and samples.&nbsp;In this study, we conducted a fundamental evaluation of sNP analysis using a dwell time of 50 µs. Gold (Au), silica (SiO2 ), and platinum (Pt) nanoparticles were analyzed by the 9500 ICP-QQQ, and the results were compared with those obtained with a 100 µs dwell time.<h4>Experimental&nbsp;</h4><h5>Instrumentation&nbsp;</h5>The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=+9500+ICP-QQQ">Agilent 9500 ICP-QQQ</a> used the standard configuration (Ni cones and u-lens), except for the torch. A quartz torch with a 1.5 mm inner diameter (id) injector was used to minimize diffusion of ion clusters in the ICP and obtain sharper, better-resolved peaks.&nbsp;Multi-element NP data acquisition and analysis were carried out using the Rapid Multi-Element Nanoparticle Analysis mode of the optional Single Nanoparticle Application Module for the Agilent OpenLab ICP-MS software. In Rapid MultiElement Nanoparticle Analysis mode, multi-element data are collected sequentially from a single sample acquisition, and all data are combined into a single file. This method saves time, as only one sample uptake and rinse are needed for all analytes. Data quality is likely enhanced, since the risk of sample contamination is considerably lower with a single analysis than with multiple separate analyses.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>For high-resolution nanoparticle analysis, the Agilent 9500 ICP-QQQ can be operated in single-particle mode with a 50 µs dwell time, as well as the default 100&nbsp;µs setting. The reduction of dwell time is enabled by advancements in both hardware and software that work together to support higher-resolution single-nanoparticle measurements.&nbsp;Improved peak resolution was demonstrated for Au, SiO2 , and Pt nanoparticles, while maintaining equivalent performance to the standard 100&nbsp;µs dwell time setting. The mean particle sizes obtained at 50&nbsp;µs for the nanoparticle suspensions were within the manufacturer’s certified ranges. Likewise, the particle size distributions measured at both 50 and 100&nbsp;µs closely matched the distributions provided by the manufacturer.&nbsp;In addition to improved peak resolution, a shorter dwell time reduces the likelihood of multiple particles being detected within a single dwell period, potentially improving data accuracy.&nbsp;Since the total data volume increases inversely with dwell time, a 50 µs dwell time generates more data points per unit time. To reduce processing time when handling large datasets, Agilent ICP-MS software (both ICP-MS MassHunter and OpenLab ICP-MS) uses multithreaded CPU‑based computation for sNP data analysis, maintaining efficient data management.Although 50&nbsp;µs may not be necessary for many sNP analyses, having the option to use this shorter dwell time provides greater flexibility. For example, it could enable samples with unexpectedly high particle counts to be analyzed without needing additional dilution.<h3>2. Depending on the intended application, mechanical properties are measured by material testing, but to achieve further improvements in performance, it is necessary to observe the origin of fracture and the condition of crack propagation. However, glass displays brittle fracture behavior, which is difficult to observe visually. In our previous reports, we observed the fracture behavior of glass specimens in ring-on-ring tests 1, 2, and those observation results indicated that a high-speed video camera with a recording speed (framerate) of several Mfps or higher is required to observe the fracture behavior of glass. In this experiment, the fracture behavior of a glass tube during a compression test was observed with an HPV-X3 high-speed video camera. In addition, synchronous videorecording was carried out using two HPV-X3 cameras, and the strain distribution during fracture was visualized by a 3D-DIC (three-dimensional digital correlation) analysis.<h4>Specimen Information and Measurement System</h4>The glass tube used as the specimen was compressed in the axial direction using an AGX-V2 precision universal testing machine. Table 1 and Table 2 show the equipment configuration and the specimen dimensions, respectively. In this article, fracture observation in the compression test and visualization of the strain distribution by 3D-DIC analysis were carried out. Fig. 1 shows the condition of the test for the 3D-DIC analysis. When an observation target such as a glass tube has a curved shape, a 3- dimensional strain analysis is necessary. Therefore, synchronous recording from two directions was conducted using two<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=+HPV-X3"> HPV-X3</a> high-speed video cameras, with a random pattern drawn on the specimen surface, as shown in Fig. 2. Table 3 shows the recording conditions.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>The fracture of a glass tube during a compression test was observed using two HPV-X3 high-speed video cameras, and a 3D-DIC analysis was carried out. In fracture observation, the crack that became the origin of fracture could be identified, and the condition of crack propagation was clearly captured. In the 3D-DIC analysis, it was possible to observe the concentration of strain in front of the crack and the decrease in strain after crack propagation. Since glass fracture is brittle and is extremely rapid, a high-speed video camera with a recording speed of 5 Mfps or higher, such as the HPV-X3, is an effective instrument for fracture observation.<h3>3. While handheld XRF can identify most grades of stainless steel, as well as titanium, nickel, cobalt, and copper alloys within 1 to 2 seconds, sorting aluminum alloys can take significantly longer. This is especially true if those alloys cannot be specifically identified by the content of their transition metals, such as manganese, copper zinc, nickel, iron chromium or titanium. The separation of grades within the AA 1000, AA 5000 and AA 6000 series, as well as casting alloy family grade separation, requires the measurement of light elements such as magnesium or silicon. Those elements are generally measured using an X-ray beam with a lower voltage, which results in longer measurements of typically 10&nbsp;seconds or more. About a decade ago, handheld laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) emerged as an alternative for sorting aluminum and magnesium alloy grades within a few seconds. These include the smaller spot size and fluctuations related to the transient nature of the laser-induced plasma. Compared to a wider, continuous beam of X-rays, LIBS analysis is intrinsically more sensitive to surface roughness and surface contamination, and thus less precise than HHXRF.&nbsp;More recently, the Light Metal Quick Sort (LMQS) mode available on the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products/1992">Thermo Scientific™ Niton™ XL5 series of handheld XRF analyzers </a>uses a different logic than conventional HHXRF instruments. Provided with a 5W (up to 500µA) tube and a stateof-the-art silicon drift detector (SDD) with a graphene window, the analyzer starts measuring, at low voltage, elements from magnesium to zinc. This enables identification of most aluminum and magnesium alloy grades within one to three seconds, as well as the identification of other families of alloys. Longer measurements can be set for the few aluminum alloy grades that are identified based on zirconium, tin, lead, or bismuth contents.

Agilent Technologies: Fast and Reliable Analysis of Soil and Sediments using ICP-MS with an Innovative Cell</h3>High-throughput and low detection limits with the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=9500">Agilent 9500 ICP-QQQ</a> and a Dual-Cell System&nbsp;<ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_soil_sediment_9500_icp_qqq_5994_9128en_agilent_affabfb736.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>Ever since ICP-MS instruments were first commercialized, their high sensitivity and multi-elemental capabilities have made them a suitable technique for quantifying trace elements in soil and sediment, particularly in support of environmental monitoring and regulatory compliance. To help laboratories transition to ICP-MS for these important environmental applications, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) first introduced the performance-based test Method 6020 in 2007, and revised it as Method 6020B in 2014.1 Method 6020B remains widely used worldwide for the quantitative measurement of a broad range of elements, including arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), selenium (Se), and lead (Pb), in solid and aqueous wastes by ICP-MS.&nbsp;Traditionally, single-quadrupole ICP-MS (SQ ICP-MS) instruments equipped with collision/reaction cells (CRCs) have been used to meet the requirements of Method 6020B for sample analysis. Laboratories have typically used a combination of acquisition strategies to control interferences, including no gas mode for interference-free analytes and low mass analytes, helium (He) collision mode for analytes affected by polyatomic ion interferences, and half-mass mode to correct doubly charged ion (M2+) interferences. This multi-mode approach has enabled laboratories to meet Method 6020B performance and quality control (QC) criteria over many years.&nbsp;Now, for the first time, the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=9500">Agilent 9500 Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS</a> featuring the Dual-Cell System (DCS) cell introduces two innovative cell gas modes, Advanced Helium Mode (AHM) and Air cell mode.2,3 These modes simplify interference removal approaches, enhance analytical performance, and accelerate analysis timesIn this study, a range of environmentally certified reference materials (CRMs) was selected to represent sample types routinely analyzed in high-throughput environmental testing laboratories. As these laboratories prioritize productivity across all aspects of their operations to remain competitive, the 9500 ICP-QQQ configuration and analytical method were optimized to maximize sample throughput. The performance of the method was evaluated according to criteria set out in Method 6020B.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>The study has shown that the Agilent 9500 ICP-QQQ, equipped with the unique Dual-Cell System (DCS) and the optional AVS&nbsp;MS discrete sampling system, is ideal for high-throughput, multi-element analysis of soil and sediment samples.&nbsp;The use of the EPA 6020B Preset Method and selection of UHMI-4 plasma conditions in the Agilent OpenLab ICP-MS software enabled rapid setup of the instrument’s operating parameters, ensuring consistent performance across operators.&nbsp;The instrument’s matrix-tolerant plasma (low CeO/Ce ratio), UHMI, and DCS effectively addressed the challenges of analyzing high-matrix samples, including signal drift, ion suppression, and spectral interferences, thereby delivering an optimized analytical workflow.&nbsp;The method’s productivity was enhanced by operating the DCS in Advanced Helium Mode (AHM) and Air cell mode and by using short integration times, saving 5 to 10 s per sample. AHM replaces conventional no gas, helium (He) collision, and high energy He (HEHe) in a single mode, while Air cell mode uses oxygen from the laboratory, alleviating the need for gas cylinders. The 9500 maintains exceptionally high sensitivity in AHM and Air cell mode, minimizing background signals.&nbsp;Overall, the 9500 ICP-QQQ with DCS achieved excellent analytical data:&nbsp;<ul><li>Low detection limits in the low ng/L (ppt) range for most analytes.&nbsp;</li><li>Removal of M2+ interferences on Ca, As, and Se generated by Sr and rare earth elements (REEs) in the soil samples using Air cell mode.&nbsp;</li><li>Recoveries of all certified elements in the five environmental CRMs or matrix spike samples within 100 ± 10%, confirming the effective control of interferences using AHM and Air cell mode.&nbsp;</li><li>Method robustness and reproducibility over more than eight hours of continuous measurements, as demonstrated by the recoveries of ISTDs and CCVs within the limits specified in EPA Method 6020.&nbsp;</li></ul>The 9500 ICP-QQQ with DCS and an integrated AVS MS enables high-throughput, routine analysis of complex environmental matrices. The batteries consist of a positive electrode, a negative electrode, an electrolyte, and a separator. Positive electrodes use transition metal oxides (e.g., lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide [NMC]) or lithium iron phosphate (LFP) to transfer lithium, and negative electrodes generally use graphite and, recently, high-capacity materials, such as silicon. One of the issues with lithium-ion batteries is that the positive and negative electrodes are prone to cracking. This is caused by the high pressures during manufacturing, as well as during charging and discharging. This is also thought to affect their performance, such as the cycle properties. Therefore, research is being conducted on the relationship between mechanical properties and the electrochemical performance. 1), 2) This Application News presents compression tests on various battery materials as examples of quantitative evaluations of their mechanical properties. The MCT series of microcompression testing machines can perform compression testing of minute single particles. In addition, the MCT-AD model can automatically perform extraction of measurement particles, length measurements, and test operations. This results in significant time savings and enables evaluations with a larger number of measurements.<h4>MCT-AD Micro Compression Testing Machine&nbsp;</h4>Fig. 1 shows the MCT-AD and the measurement principle. The MCT compressed single particles placed on a lower compression plate using a flat indenter. Then, using data on diameters of the particles obtained in advance, a test forcedisplacement graph was created that measured various types of strength of the particles. The MCT-AD automatically performs selection of the measurement particles, length measurements, and cleaning of the indenter, which in the past had to be performed manually by the operator after each measurement. Zn-Ni coatings offer superior corrosion resistance compared to pure zinc coatings and often replace cadmium coatings, as they provide comparable or better properties while complying with regulations such as REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals) and RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances). Commonly used in the automotive, aerospace, and electronics industries, Zn-Ni coatings are often applied to fasteners, connectors, and structural parts exposed to corrosive environments.&nbsp;Zn-Ni coatings typically consist of 85-93% zinc (Zn) and 7-15% nickel (Ni). The exact composition may vary depending on the application’s specific requirements. The coating process involves electroplating, which consists of immersing the metal substrate in an electrolyte solution containing zinc and nickel ions. An electric current is then passed through the solution, causing the zinc-nickel alloy to deposit onto the substrate. To ensure that specifications for coated parts are met, metal finishing companies must verify both the coating thickness and composition.<h4>Instrumentation&nbsp;</h4>X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) is the technology of choice for quality control of Zn-Ni plating, as it is the only analytical method that can determine the thickness and composition of the coating layer non-destructively. The use of handheld X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (HHXRF) instruments enables near-line analyses of finished products, which can be analyzed directly without being cut and brought to a separate chamber with benchtop instruments.&nbsp;In previous work [1], the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products/1992">Thermo Scientific™ Niton™ XL5 Plus Handheld XRF Analyzer </a>was demonstrated to be capable of measuring the coating weight or coating thickness of up to 4 layers of metal coatings on a substrate, using a proprietary standardless “fundamental parameters” algorithm. The layers and the substrate can be pure elements or alloys. Although the fundamental parameters algorithm can determine the thickness of Zn-Ni plating standardless, it delivers partial information, as the composition of the layer is not measured. To measure the composition and the thickness of the coatings simultaneously, another approach using empirical calibration can be deployed. The Niton XL5 Plus User Mode enables the operators to create their own calibration curves based on the measurements carried out on reference materials of Zn-Ni plated samples with known coating thickness and composition.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>Performing quality control of Zn-Ni coatings is essential for metal finishers to ensure the corrosion resistance of critical parts used in the automotive and aerospace industries. The puncture resistance of geotextiles are commonly determined as per ASTM D62411) and ISO 122362), which measures the force required to penetrate the fabrics using a standard plunger. Overall, puncture resistance testing plays a vital role in ensuring the long-term durability and reliability of geotextilesin demanding engineering applications.&nbsp;The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=AGS-X2">Shimadzu AGS-X2 series Universal Testing Machine </a>is a high-precision universal testing system designed for accurate evaluation of mechanical properties such as tensile, compression, and puncture resistance. Test Method&nbsp;</h4>The test was conducted on the non-woven geotextile using the AGS-50kNX2D UTM, shown in the Figure 1. Two different samples (1000 and 400 GSM) were procured from the market and five specimens were prepared from various areas of each sample. Conclusion</h4>The test results are consistent across multiple specimens and exhibit gradual deformation behavior. This indicates that the material can withstand high penetration forces without sudden failure, demonstrating its ability to effectively resist localized stresses.&nbsp;Geotextiles are available in different GSM values, representing mass per unit area and directly influence their mechanical and physical performance. Lower GSM geotextiles are lighter, flexible and lower thickness making them suitable for applications involving moderate loads. In contrast higher GSM geotextiles are thicker and denser, offering significantly higher puncture resistance and making them suitable for heavy duty applications.&nbsp;The Shimadzu’s universal testing machine AGS-X2 series demonstrated accurate, stable, and repeatable performance for conducting puncture resistance testing in accordance with ASTM D6241 and ISO 12236. The system provided precise control of crosshead speed, reliable load measurement, and clear identification of the initial peak load as required by the standard. The high-resolution load–displacement data acquisition enabled accurate determination of puncture strength and displacement at maximum force. Overall, the Shimadzu system ensures compliance with ASTM D6241 and ISO 12236 requirements and offers a dependable solution for quality control, research, and material comparison of geotextiles.¨<h3>3. ICP-MS systems with integrated CRCs range from single quadrupole (SQ) ICP-MS used in environmental and food analysis, to triple quadrupole ICP-MS (ICP-QQQ) for advanced research applications. For routine applications, Helium Kinetic Energy Discrimination (He KED) mode, commonly referred to as helium mode (He mode), is the most widely used CRC operational mode. The widespread use of He mode is due to its universal effectiveness in reducing a broad range of polyatomic interferences without the need for element-specific optimization.&nbsp;Unlike CRCs that rely on reactive cell gases and require complex tuning (often referred to as reaction cells), He mode effectively mitigates many commonly occurring polyatomic ion interferences without the need for intricate adjustments. In contrast, reaction cells often require careful selection of gas type (such as ammonia or oxygen) and tuning parameters based on the specific interfering ions on analytes of interest.&nbsp;Building on the simplicity of He mode, Agilent has developed Advanced Helium Mode (AHM) for the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=9500">Agilent 9500 Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS (ICP-QQQ)</a>. AHM represents a breakthrough in interference removal technology, enabled by the newly designed Agilent Dual-Cell System (DCS) and high-speed cell voltage control. These innovations deliver high sensitivity across the mass range and superior interference removal performance for routine applications. Compared to conventional He mode, AHM demonstrates the following improvements:<ul><li>Around a 20-fold sensitivity improvement for low-mass elements, such as beryllium (Be) and boron (B)&nbsp;</li><li>Around a 2-fold improvement for mid-to-high mass elements&nbsp;</li><li>A reduction of more than 33% in data acquisition time while maintaining detection limits (DLs), accelerating analytical measurement times&nbsp;</li></ul>AHM not only replaces traditional He KED but also consolidates multiple tuning modes including no gas, He, and HEHe into a single, streamlined mode. Integrated into the 9500 ICP-QQQ, AHM is a next-generation standard He mode that is faster, simpler, and delivers higher performance than its predecessor. This technical note describes the performance enhancement mechanisms of the DCS and AHM. It also includes some comparative results with conventional He KED mode to highlight the analytical improvements of AHM.<h4>Overview and advantages of AHM&nbsp;</h4>Typically, multi-element ICP-MS methods apply no gas mode to the determination of low-mass elements like Be and B due to low sensitivity in traditional He KED mode. Consequently, many routine ICP-MS applications have required multiple tune setups, combining no gas, He, and HEHe. Each mode switch introduces a delay due to cell pressure stabilization requirements.&nbsp;In practice, low-mass elements (m/z &lt; 23) are generally unaffected by polyatomic ion interferences, so KED is often unnecessary. Therefore, in AHM, different voltages are applied to the DCS (effectively disabling KED) for low-mass elements, while keeping standard settings for elements with m/z ≥ 23.&nbsp;The DCS voltages are dynamically switched in sync with Q2 using a high-speed voltage control circuit, providing over 20× sensitivity improvement for low-mass elements compared to conventional He mode. AHM eliminates the need to run in no gas mode, greatly simplifying the method. As a default approach, AHM alone is suitable for most applications.1<h3>2. Among them, the suspension strut used in the suspension system is an important component that stabilizes the vehicle body by mitigating the impact caused by uneven road surfaces.&nbsp;“JASO C611 Suspension Struts for Automobiles”1), a standard of JASO (Japanese Automotive Standards Organization), established by JSAE, specifies the definition, quality, and test method for suspension struts. There is no international standard that is equivalent to JASO C611.&nbsp;In order to improve the performance of suspension struts, it is necessary to measure the damping force against speed by changing the excitation speed. The performance of suspension struts can be confirmed by measuring the response, such as the relationship between speed and damping force and the Lissajous waveform.&nbsp;This article introduces an example of the test method “Damping Force Characteristic Test” specified in JASO C611, which was conducted on a Shimadzu EMT series electromagnetic fatigue testing machine.<h4>Testing Equipment&nbsp;</h4>The EMT-1kNV-50 electromagnetic dynamic and fatigue testing machine was used in this test. Fig. 1 shows a photograph of the testing machine. The electromagnetic actuator with extremely high frequency response enables highly accurate dynamic testing. In this test, the maximum test speed was 0.6 m/s. The EMT seriesis most suitable for testing at such high frequencies.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>A damping force characteristic test on a suspension strut based on JASO C611 was conducted using an EMT series electromagnetic fatigue testing machine and Windows software for 4830. The test conditions were set using the excitation speed, and it was confirmed that the test was accurately controlled as set. The standard “JASO C611 Suspension Struts for Automobiles” referred to this time is derived from “JASO C602 Automotive Parts - Telescopic Shock Absorbers for Suspension Systems”2). Although C602 also prescribes a damping force characteristic test, it is almost equivalent to the C611, and the test machine configuration can be used by replacing the jig.<h3>3. In semiconductor applications, Ti is widely used as a sputtering target for thin-film deposition, where even trace levels of impurities can negatively affect film uniformity, electrical properties, and device reliability. In aerospace applications, Ti is valued for its high strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance, making it an ideal material for engine components and structural parts. However, any impurities can compromise the mechanical integrity and diminish the long-term performance of components, especially when operating under extreme conditions.Ensuring the reliability and functionality of Ti in these demanding environments requires precise quantification of trace impurities in the raw material. Triple quadrupole Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-QQQ) provides robust suppression of spectral interferences and ultra-low detection limits (DLs), enabling accurate determination of impurities at or below the 1 mg/kg (ppm) level in the solid. This level of sensitivity is particularly important for quality control (QC) of high-purity Ti, where conventional techniques such as XRF, ICP-OES, and GD-MS lack the sensitivity and DLs.&nbsp;For unrivalled interference reduction using reactive cell gases, Agilent ICP-QQQ instruments include two unit mass (1 u) quadrupole mass filters, Q1 and Q2.1 Q1 is positioned before the collision/reaction cell (CRC) to select which ions enter the cell for reaction with the cell gas. Q2 filters ions that exit the cell before they pass to the detector. This tandem mass spectrometer (MS/MS) operation allows for unmatched control of reaction chemistry in the CRC, making the technique useful for handling intense spectral interferences, including polyatomic, doubly charged ion (M++), isobaric, and peak overlap interferences.&nbsp;Using the newly developed <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=9500">Agilent 9500 Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS</a> featuring a Dual-Cell System (DCS) CRC and equipped with an optional m-lens, analysts can confidently analyze Ti matrix samples and verify material purity over extended measurement periods. The m-lens is designed with an optimized geometry that minimizes background signals from easily ionized elements that can deposit on interface components during long runs. This feature enables the instrument to maintain high-power, matrix-tolerant plasma conditions while achieving ultralow background equivalent concentrations (BECs), which is critical for ppt-level impurity analysis. Operating the DCS with a suitable cell gas effectively controls spectral interferences from Ti-based species (Ti²+ and TiO+ ) that impact elements like sodium (Na), magnesium (Mg), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn). Together with the m‑lens, this approach ensures accurate measurement of trace elemental impurities, enabling compliance within stringent industry standards. The effectiveness of the m‑lens in minimizing background signals and enabling ppt‑level impurity analysis under robust plasma conditions has also been demonstrated in high-matrix applications using ICP‑QQQ.2, 3 In addition to interference control, the 9500 ICP-QQQ system’s robustness and reproducibility make it well suited for routine analysis in both research and production settings. This capability supports the continued advancement of high-tech applications that rely on ultra-clean titanium.In this study, a 200 ppm Ti solution prepared from a high-purity Ti powder was used to represent a typical sample encountered in advanced material analysis. The performance of the 9500 ICP-QQQ for quantifying trace impurities, including Na, Mg, Cu, and Zn, in a high Ti matrix was assessed through spike-recovery experiments and long-term stability tests.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>This study demonstrated the effectiveness of the Agilent 9500 ICP-QQQ with m-lens for the ultra-trace analysis of impurity metals in high-purity titanium. By applying optimized reaction gas conditions and mass-shift techniques, spectral interferences from Ti-based species such as Ti²+ and TiO+ were successfully mitigated, enabling accurate quantification of elements like Mg, Cu, and Zn.&nbsp;The method achieved limits of quantification in the sub-ppm range for the undiluted Ti digestion solution and maintained stable ISTD signals over extended measurement periods. Spike recovery tests confirmed high accuracy and reproducibility, with most elements showing recoveries within ±10% and RSDs below 3%.&nbsp;These results confirm that the 9500 ICP-QQQ is a robust and reliable tool for quality control of high-purity Ti, supporting its critical applications in semiconductor and aerospace industries where impurity levels must be strictly controlled.<h3>2. Raman spectroscopy leverages the unique vibrational signatures of molecules, allowing for highly specific detection even in complex biological matrices. This enables simultaneous, real-time monitoring of multiple CPPs, including nutrient concentrations, metabolic by-products, and cell density. As a result, users gain deep, real-time insights into cellular metabolism and can implement more dynamic, adaptive feeding strategies based on metabolic network understanding.&nbsp;Previous studies have demonstrated the negative impact of high lactate on cell health and quantity and quality of titer produced.² In this study, we demonstrate the successful implementation of process Raman analyzer for simultaneous multi-component feedback control of glucose and lactate in a bioreactor. By continuously monitoring both analytes, the feedback control loop dynamically maintained a constant total carbon concentration (glucose + lactate) at a setpoint of 2 g/L.&nbsp;This advanced carbon-source-based control strategy ensured that cellular metabolic demands were met while promoting lactate consumption toward the end of the run.
