Larger laser spot size can provide representative results with a single measurement
Standard Raman microscopes are traditionally used to perform Raman measurements or Raman spectroelectrochemical experiments when they are coupled with electrochemical equipment. Raman spectra collected with confocal microscopes allows the characterization of very small areas. However, these instruments can exhibit several limitations. SPELEC RAMAN, a new generation of spectroscopic and spectroelectrochemical instruments, offers powerful and interesting features to overcome these issues. In this Application Note, a detailed comparison is made between the main features of a standard Raman instrument and the SPELEC RAMAN by analyzing the results obtained with both instruments.
CONCLUSION
SPELEC RAMAN exhibits a number of competitive advantages over standard Raman microscopes. For instance, the spot size of SPELEC RAMAN allows the characterization of a large area in a single experiment, obtaining representative results with only one measurement. The versatility of the Raman probe is demonstrated since it can be used with different cells. The portability as well as the simplicity of SPELEC RAMAN facilitate the performance of optical experiments. It also ensures the synchronization of electrochemical and optical signals in case Raman spectroelectrochemical measurements are carried out. In addition, DropView SPELEC software allows realtime acquisition of the data and the performance of operando measurements. The easy data treatment and analysis of the results is done using one-click tools.

Multi-element analysis of biological samples using laser ablation with an Agilent ICP-MS
LA-ICP-MS provides bioimaging and metallomics data
Bioimaging and metallomics are complementary fields of study that explore the role of analytes and metals in biological systems. Bioimaging visualizes the presence or absence of certain tissues, cells, and low molecular weight compounds while metallomics seeks to understand the functions and roles of metals in biological structures. Analytical techniques such as liquid-chromatography-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LC-ICP-MS), single cell-ICP-MS, and laser ablation (LA) ICP-MS have been used for protein quantification1 , single cell analysis2 , and bioimaging, respectively.
LA-ICP-MS can provide detailed information about the localization of elements on the surface of solid samples, as demonstrated in this study for the investigation of the distribution of metals on thin sections of biological samples.

Goal: To demonstrate the capabilities of the Thermo Scientific™ iCAP™ PRO XP ICP-OES Duo instrument, in conjunction with the Thermo Scientific™ iSC-65 Autosampler, for the fast and robust elemental analysis of fertilizers.
Conclusions: This application note presents a fast and optimized method for the quick, accurate, and robust analysis of major and trace elements in fertilizers using the iCAP PRO XP ICP-OES Duo instrument and the iSC-65 Autosampler. The highlights of the study are listed below:
<ul>
<li>A quick and simple method with a run time of 36 s per sample for all target elements in fertilizers has been developed. This has been achieved using the excellent sensitivity in radial mode and the fast data acquisition capabilities of the iCAP PRO XP ICP-OES Duo instrument using the iFR mode. Due to the fully simultaneous acquisition across the full optical spectrum, an additional exposure can be eliminated, offering a 50% reduction of the time required for data acquisition. </li>
<li>The use of the Step Ahead feature available on the iSC-65 Autosampler compliments the speed of the iCAP PRO XP ICP-OES Duo instrument and the chosen settings in this method by enabling rinsing parallel to data acquisition. The combination of both provides the opportunity to reduce sample turnover times further by almost 30% compared to a standard setup.</li>
<li>The method allows achievement of the typically required limits of quantification for commonly regulated elemental contaminants in fertilizers—such as As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Ni, and Pb—with respect to the criteria prescribed in the Regulation (EU) 2019/1009. At the same time, it is capable of covering a large linear dynamic range of 0.01–20 mg·kg-1 for trace elements and 1–1,500 mg·kg-1 for elements present in higher concentrations. If the total concentration of Cr is found to be higher than the specified limit, then a speciation technique may be used to determine the amount of Cr (VI) present in the samples. The concept of the application can be easily extended to other sample types, such as soil or wastewater analysis. ICP-MS instruments can also benefit from single mode measurement and the high-speed capabilities of the iSC-65 Autosampler.² </li>
<li>Continuous, uninterrupted measurements of &gt;5 hours covering more than 500 unknown samples proves the accuracy and unmatched robustness of the developed method, which makes the iCAP PRO XP ICP-OES Duo instrument an ideal choice for high productivity analytical testing laboratories.</li>

Conclusions: The iCAP TQe ICP-MS was employed to analyze 53 elements including fluorine in process water derived from hydrogen fuel cells. Among the analytes, several critical interferences can cause unexpected bias, and these were investigated closely for effective and complete removal by means of selective collision / reaction cell reactions with oxygen. This study also included the development of a method for the analysis of fluorine, generally only possible in an indirect measurement. This analytical method was rigorously tested, and the results obtained clearly demonstrate the fowling analytical advantages:
<ul>
<li>The iCAP TQe ICP-MS operated in TQ-O2 and He KED modes allowed the analysis of 53 elements in relevant sample matrices over a wide concentration range. For minor elements, the method was tested over 4 orders of magnitude (from 0.01 to 100 µg·L-1), whereas major elements were tested between 1 to 100 µg·L-1.</li>
<li>Using a high throughput analysis approach, with a new autosampler equipped with a Step Ahead feature for minimizing total analysis time, all elements relevant for the development of hydrogen fuel cell technology could be measured accurately with low detection limits.</li>
<li>The use of TQ-O₂ mode provided advanced performance for eliminating the polyatomic interferences of phosphorus, sulfur, silver, and cadmium in the simulated hydrogen fuel cell process water. This covered both polyatomic interferences as well as overlaps created by intense signals from isotopes of elements present in high concentrations.</li>
<li>The iCAP TQe ICP-MS offers the flexibility to choose high resolution for the Q1 and Q3 quadrupoles, enabling complete elimination of polyatomic interference and isobaric interferences. </li>
<li>The feasibility of fluorine analysis was demonstrated using an indirect method after complexation with barium. The iCAP TQe ICP-MS showed accurate and precise determination of fluorine as proven by the spike recovery tests performed.</li>
<li>Excellent stability performance was obtained with the iCAP TQe ICP-MS together with excellent CCV and spike recovery results over a 3-hour run without internal standard correction. This provides the advantage of avoiding potential contamination from addition of the internal standard solution.</li>

Abstract: The Agilent Resolve handheld Raman system is a versatile analyzer that can be deployed on location to identify a broad range of materials. It uses traditional surface analysis mode and through-barrier mode through Agilent&#39;s proprietary spatially offset Raman spectroscopy (SORS) technology. SORS enables samples that are concealed behind barriers such as colored and opaque plastics, paper, and highly pigmented paints and varnishes to be identified. This application note details how the Resolve Raman system can be used to detect concealed endangered species products using SORS. Data are presented that show the effectiveness of Resolve operating in traditional surface mode to distinguish ivory from a plastic substitute. Further analysis of endangered animal products using surface mode enabled the division of animal products into two broad categories: mineral-based and protein-based. Principal components analysis (PCA) was used to further differentiate the protein-based samples, which included pangolin scale, rhino horn, dried seahorse, and totoaba fish bladder, based on their spectral differences.
Conclusion: The Agilent Resolve handheld Raman analyzer includes various spectral libraries that enable the identification of a broad range of chemicals and materials. This study has shown the application of the instrument and the SORS technique for the detection of endangered animal species. Using a combination of conventional surface and through-barrier modes of analysis, Raman spectroscopy and SORS technology can be used to:

<li>Differentiate plastic substitute materials from authentic ivory and bone.</li>

Conclusion
A custom process was developed for mixing carbon dioxide in argon and supplying it to the plasma of the Agilent 8900 ICP-QQQ. The study showed that the use of gaseous carbon for plasma ionization enhancement provided advantages over traditional liquid sources of carbon, such as acetic acid, in terms of cost and performance. The scalability of the gas supply system can be enhanced by increasing the size of the ballast tank, enabling the efficient use with multiple ICP-MS instruments. This optimization would lead to more cost reductions.
The use of CO2 in Ar, supplied from a ballast tank, ensures easy and rapid adjustment of the carbon composition of the plasma with minimal flush out times, addressing a common challenge associated with liquid carbon sources. Carbon was shown to enhance the signal of key elements such as arsenic in the plasma, while maintaining the sensitivity of other elements. The carbon buffering effects of the modified plasma enable the quantification of low concentrations of analytes in food samples, such as grains. Adding carbon to the plasma if especially useful for samples that have variable carbon content, as it compensates for any sample differences and minimizes the variability from easily ionized elements. Based on our experience, the 8900 ICP-QQQ has proven to be a highly efficient and cost-effective tool for analyzing export grain cargoes, especially in a high-throughput laboratory setting.

Abstract: Ensuring the quality of electrolytes used in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is crucial for maintaining the safety, performance, and longevity of these energy storage devices. LIB electrolytes consist of lithium salts dissolved in organic solvents. Any discoloration (yellowness) of these near-clear solutions can indicate contamination or degradation. Industry methods such as ASTM D5386-16 Standard Test Method for Color of Liquids Using Tristimulus Colorimetry can be applied to assess the quality of electrolytes by conducting instrumental color measurements using UV-Vis spectroscopy. Given the low absorbance of colorless-to-near-colorless liquid samples like LIB electrolytes and solvents, a highly accurate and sensitive UV-Vis spectrophotometer is essential.
This study demonstrates an effective quality assessment method for LIB electrolytes and solvents using the Agilent Cary 3500 Flexible UV-Vis spectrophotometer fitted with the optional Agilent Cary Sipper flow cell pump. The method is suitable for production quality control of hazardous samples, ensuring safe sample handling, high throughput, and high quality results for production-critical chemicals.
Conclusion: The Agilent Cary 3500 Flexible UV-Vis spectrophotometer provided accurate and precise color measurements for colorless to near-colorless LIB electrolytes and solvents in accordance with the ASTM D5386 standard method. Advantages of the Cary 3500 Flexible method and findings based on the data set include:
<ul>
<li>Hazardous samples were introduced directly into a 10 mm path length flow cell using the Cary Sipper pump, ensuring user safety and high sample throughput without compromising data quality.</li>
<li>The superior sensitivity (high signal-to-noise ratio) of the Cary 3500 combined with Agilent Cary WinUV Color application software enabled the reliable monitoring and control of electrolyte properties by analyzing light absorption in the visible spectrum.</li>
<li>Higher Pt-Co color (APHA) values of the used LIB electrolytes compared to fresh samples suggested a deterioration in quality due to the color changes.</li>
<li>Color measurements could be used to improve the quality control of LIB electrolytes and solvents by identifying discoloration—an indication of contamination or degradation that could affect battery performance.</li>
<li>This effective method could be implemented in both manufacturing QC settings and R&amp;D laboratories.</li>
</ul>
QC color measurements using the Cary 3500 Flexible UV-Vis would ensure that only high-quality electrolytes are used in the production of LIBs, enhancing their safety, efficiency, and durability.

Introduction: Synthetic oligonucleotides are short chains (oligomers) of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) or ribonucleic acid (RNA) molecules. They are used in applications such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests, DNA sequencing and novel therapeutic products.
The synthesis of oligonucleotides involves a four-step cyclic process followed by multi-step downstream purification. This manufacturing process as well as environment, packaging, and container closure systems can be potential sources of contamination leading to inorganic impurities formation.
To control and monitor product safety, permitted daily exposure (PDE) limits of 24 elements are defined in ICH guideline Q3D(R2)1 and USP chapter &lt;232&gt;2. ICH Q2(R1)3 and USP&lt;233&gt; 4 describe analytical measurement requirements and procedures for the measurement of those elemental impurities. Although oligonucleotide products have not been included in those regulatory guidelines yet, the industry common practice is to follow those guidelines.
In this study, an analytical workflow (Figure1) was developed in accordance with the ICH/USP guidelinesfor the analysis of elemental impurities in an oligonucleotide sample using an Agilent 7850 ICP-MS. Data was acquired to evaluate the accuracy, specificity, reproducibility, and ruggedness of the method.
Conclusion: The study has demonstrated the suitability of the Agilent 7850 ICP-MS for the identification and quantification of 24 elements in a synthetic oligonucleotide sample in compliance with existing USP and ICH guidelines. Instrument and method performance requirements for stability, detectability, precision, specificity, ruggedness, accuracy, and spike recovery were all achieved per the criteria given in USP &lt;232&gt;/&lt;233&gt; and ICH Q3D(R2)/Q2(R1).
As the development and use of oligonucleotides in therapeutic applications continue to advance, the elemental impurities analysis of oligonucleotides using 7850 ICP-MS can safeguard the product quality and safety.

Introduction: A culture medium usually contains elements spanning a wide range of concentrations, from trace (Co, Cu, Se, etc.) to several thousand ppm (Na). Elementsin the medium are important in cell cultures because they are taken up by the cells and contribute to enzyme activity and redox reactions. On the other hand, it has been pointed out that unexpected contamination from raw materials and equipment in the culture media manufacturing process may cause differences in element concentrations among batches. Therefore, it is important to know the element concentration profiles in the culture medium to achieve a homogeneous cell culture. 
ICP-MS issuitable for this purpose because it can analyze multiple elements with high sensitivity and has a wide dynamic range. In this Application News, an ICPMS-2050 was used to analyze both trace and high-concentration elements in a culture medium by dilution-only pretreatment. Furthermore, the spike recovery and long-term stability in the culture medium were evaluated using the ICPMS-2050 to confirm that there was no effect on the analytical value due to dilution-only pretreatment.
Summary: In this Application News, the ICPMS-2050 was used to analyze trace and high-concentration elements in a culture medium using dilution-only pretreatment. Good spike recoveries were obtained for all the measured elements, verifying that the culture medium can be accurately analyzed with dilution-only pretreatment. In addition, the results of CCV and internal standard recoveries showed good long-term stability.

Thermo Fisher Scientific: <a href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_002821_tea_icap_ms_icap_tqe_industrial_an002821_em_en_b60acdccc6.pdf">Analysis of process water from hydrogen fuel cells using triple quadrupole inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS)</a></h4>

Goal: To demonstrate the analysis of process water from hydrogen fuel cells for inorganic trace contaminants with high sensitivity and accuracy using triple quadrupole ICP-MS
Conclusions: The iCAP TQe ICP-MS was employed to analyze 53 elements including fluorine in process water derived from hydrogen fuel cells. Among the analytes, several critical interferences can cause unexpected bias, and these were investigated closely for effective and complete removal by means of selective collision / reaction cell reactions with oxygen. This study also included the development of a method for the analysis of fluorine, generally only possible in an indirect measurement. This analytical method was rigorously tested, and the results obtained clearly demonstrate the fowling analytical advantages:
<ul>
<li>The iCAP TQe ICP-MS operated in TQ-O2 and He KED modes allowed the analysis of 53 elements in relevant sample matrices over a wide concentration range. For minor elements, the method was tested over 4 orders of magnitude (from 0.01 to 100 µg·L-1), whereas major elements were tested between 1 to 100 µg·L⁻¹.</li>
<li>Using a high throughput analysis approach, with a new autosampler equipped with a Step Ahead feature for minimizing total analysis time, all elements relevant for the development of hydrogen fuel cell technology could be measured accurately with low detection limits.</li>
<li>The use of TQ-O₂ mode provided advanced performance for eliminating the polyatomic interferences of phosphorus, sulfur, silver, and cadmium in the simulated hydrogen fuel cell process water. This covered both polyatomic interferences as well as overlaps created by intense signals from isotopes of elements present in high concentrations.</li>
<li>he iCAP TQe ICP-MS offers the flexibility to choose high resolution for the Q1 and Q3 quadrupoles, enabling complete elimination of polyatomic interference and isobaric interferences.</li>
<li>The feasibility of fluorine analysis was demonstrated using an indirect method after complexation with barium. The iCAP TQe ICP-MS showed accurate and precise determination of fluorine as proven by the spike recovery tests performed.</li>
<li>Excellent stability performance was obtained with the iCAP TQe ICP-MS together with excellent CCV and spike recovery results over a 3-hour run without internal standard correction. This provides the advantage of avoiding potential contamination from addition of the internal standard solution.</li>

For oral preparations, only seven elements of Class 1 and 2A should be considered, except for the intentional addition of elements such as catalyst utilization during synthesis. However, the origins of contamination by elemental impurities are diverse, including not only the components of the drug substance and additives, but also manufacturing equipment and implements. Therefore, a screening analysis was carried out for all 24 elements, considering potential elemental impurities. In addition, when internal standard correction is to be used, as in a related article a, the content of candidate internal standard elements in the specimens must be verified in advance. In this article, a simple concentration analysis of the 24 elements in a drug product as elemental impurities was carried out using the preset method for screening analysis of drug products, which is included in the ICPMS-2040/2050 (Fig. 1). The concentration of the elements used in internal standard correction in the drug was also measured, and it was found that the elements can be used in correction.Conclusion: In this article, a simultaneous screening analysis of 24 elemental impurity elements in an oral drug product and candidate elements for internal standard correction was carried out using an ICPMS-2040/2050. Therefore, any Impurities in them must be carefully monitored. The International Cooperation on Cosmetics Regulation (ICCR) recommended limits for Pb (10 ppm) in 2013 and for Hg (1 ppm) in 2016. Regarding analyzing elements in cosmetics, ISO 1392 (Measurement of traces of heavy metals in cosmetic finished products using ICP/MS technique) was issued on August 17, 2021. This test method demonstrates the technique for measuring heavy metals in cosmetic products using ICP-MS. In this Application news, eight elements, including those listed in ISO 21392 (Cr, Co, Ni, As, Cd, Sb, Pb) and mercury (Hg), were analyzed with the Shimadzu ICPMS-2040/2050 ICP mass spectrometer (Fig. 1).Conclusion: Simultaneous analysis of heavy metals in cosmetics was performed by ICP-MS with reference to ISO21392. It was found that the ICPMS-2040/2050 could be used for analysis with a sensitivity that was well within the required value. The recovery test results were good, and the validity of the analysis was confirmed.By using a mini torch, the argon gas consumption and running costs were reduced.<h4>4. China dominates global SIB production, accounting for roughly 95% of the world's capacity. However, interest and development of this technology is also increasing in other regions due to the cost-effectiveness, safety, fast charging times, and long life cycles of SIBs. The production capacity of the batteries worldwide is expected to rise significantly by 2030.The electrolyte of a battery facilitates the movement of ions between the cathode and anode, making it a key component that affects the charge transfer properties and overall performance of the final device. Many SIBs use a Na-conducting salt as the electrolyte, such as sodium hexafluorophosphate (NaPF6), sodium perchlorate (NaClO4), or sodium bistrifluoromethylsulfonimide (NaTFSI).NaPF6 is the most widely used salt due to its higher ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability compared to the other salts. However, these properties can be affected by the presence of elemental impurities such as chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn) in the electrolyte. Impurities can also lead to side reactions within the electrolyte or can contribute to the formation of passivation layers on electrode surfaces or current collectors, reducing overall battery efficiency, lifespan, and safety. The detection of trace elements in Na salt electrolytes has therefore become an essential part of the quality control (QC) process in Na-ion battery manufacturing.Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) is a fast, robust analytical technique that is widely used for the simultaneous measurement of multiple trace elements in complex battery-related samples.However, the presence of many Na and other metal ions in the plasma can affect the analysis of easily ionized elements (EIEs), such as calcium (Ca), lithium (Li), magnesium (Mg), and potassium (K) leading to false high results. To avoid ionization interference by the Na matrix on other elements, ICP-OES is often used in radial view mode. However, radial view mode lacks the sensitivity required for the analysis of trace elements, which is problematic if EIEs are present in the electrolyte at low concentrations. In response to this challenge, an Agilent 5800 Vertical Dual View (VDV) ICP-OES operating in axial view mode was used to determine low-concentration elemental impurities in the Na-based electrolytes. Agilent ICP-OES systems use a resilient, plug-and-play torch configuration to produce a vertical plasma that is especially good at handling challenging matrices, including battery-related samples. The solid-state RF (SSRF) system of the Agilent ICP-OES instruments, operating at 27 MHz, and a Cooled Cone Interface (CCI) produce a reliable, robust, and maintenance-free plasma suitable for high matrix samples, such as Na-salt electrolytes. The CCI deflects the plasma’s cooler tail, avoiding interferences that form in that region and enabling measurement of most elements at trace concentration levels in axial view mode. Matrix matched calibration standards were also used to minimize EIE interferences.The 5800 method, which was used to determine 26 analytes in two NaPF6 electrolyte samples, was evaluated in terms of sensitivity, accuracy, and stability. The elements included aluminum, arsenic, boron, beryllium, calcium, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, iron, potassium, lithium, magnesium, manganese, mercury, molybdenum, niobium, nickel, lead, sulfur, tantalum, titanium, tungsten, vanadium, zinc, and zirconium. While there is currently no standard for sodium hexafluorophosphate, many of these elements are specified in the China standard GB/T 19282-2014 for lithium hexafluorophosphate, plus some elements of concern within the industry.<h4>5. USP specifies the water content range in lactose monohydrate from 4.5 % to 5.5 % [2]. The analysis of water in lactose is usually done with time-consuming methods. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a faster alternative. Here, other ways of reducing CO2 emissions might be feasible, and in the center of current debate stands the use of (ideally green) hydrogen and its combustion in hydrogen fuel cells. Hydrogen fuel cells are one of the key technological developments as there is no emission other than water. In addition, hydrogen can be created using renewable energies and can be transported with low effort due to its low density of only 70.85 g·L-1 when liquified.A typical hydrogen fuel cell consists of two electrodes (anode and cathode) and a polymeric electrolyte membrane (PEM) as shown in Figure 1. Typically, the electrode is made from fluorinated polymers to allow for chemical and mechanical stability and coated with a catalyst. Platinum is the catalyst material offering the highest efficiency; however, it is expensive. To reduce the production cost, improving the platinum coating technology and monitoring potential degradation by means of metal release into the water produced in the process are important. Due to the use of material blends, different trace metals as well as other non-metal contaminants must be monitored.In general, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is the preferred analytical technique for the analysis of metals and related contaminants down to sub ng·L-1 levels. However, non-metals such as phosphorous or sulfur are challenging to analyze using ICP-MS due to a combination of their usually elevated ionization potentials and significant spectral interferences. Current hydrogen fuel cell technology uses mineral acids, like sulfuric acid, as electrolytes with a platinum catalyst on the electrodes (PAFC). Thus, it is important to monitor the concentrations of these elements at low concentrations. Oxygen- and nitrogen-based polyatomic interferences are usually of greatest concern for these analytes, but other polyatomic interference, like 31P1H+, may lead to false positive results and must be removed.Another challenge is the analysis of fluorine, which is also a key analyte for monitoring degradation of the PEM. Fluorine has the third highest first ionization potential of any element in the periodic table (behind neon and helium). In addition, its only naturally occurring isotope, 19F, falls into a severely interfered mass range, mainly due to the interferences generated by naturally abundant ions such as H3O+ and peak tailing of H2O+. To overcome these challenges, fluorine can be measured indirectly after mixing the sample with a solution containing barium. This results in the formation of 138Ba19F+ in the plasma, allowing the fluorine concentration to be measured interference free via m/z 157. Because of the required setup, the analysis of fluorine has to be conducted in a separate measurement and cannot be combined with the analysis of the other contaminants.In this study, a Thermo Scientific™ iCAP™ TQe ICP-MS was used for the analysis. Use of triple quadrupole technology offered superior interference removal and facilitated the analysis of important contaminants, including fluorine, at ultra-trace levels in the water produced by hydrogen fuel cells<h4>2. This article introduces an example of TOC measurement conducted with the Shimadzu wet oxidation total organic carbon analyzer TOC-V on a 10 % sulfuric acid solution.ConclusionThe capability to measure low-concentration TOC in 10 % sulfuric acid solution by using the wet oxidation total organic carbon analyzer TOC-V is confirmed. The V-groove nebulizer provides exceptional performance characteristics, robustness, and durability, even when using troublesome samples. It also provides a reduction in sample loading on the plasma, which reduces carbon formation on the injector of the torch, allowing extended run times, while exceeding the sensitivity requirements required for the ASTM D5185-18 standard method.IntroductionElemental analysis of lubricant and hydraulic oils is essential for predictive and preventive maintenance, as well as trend analysis in many heavy industries. The ASTM D5185‑18 standard method1 is the gold standard in tribology laboratories globally to quantify additive elements, wear metals, and contaminants. This method uses ICP-OES for the rapid elemental determination of 22 elements in both used and unused lubricating and base oils, providing quick screening of used oils for signs of wear.Tribology laboratories typically process hundreds of samples daily; therefore, they are constantly searching for ways to enhance efficiency and improve sample throughput. Instrument downtime caused by blockages in the sample introduction system (SIS) can be a common problem in these high-throughput labs. These blockages are typically caused by suspended particles in the samples blocking the nebulizer, and carbon deposits blocking the injector of the torch. Although various methods exist to remove the blockage from the nebulizer and clean the torch, all require extinguishing the plasma to remove and clean the SIS.The use of a robust nebulizer is a strategy that can enable tribology laboratories to run more samples with reduced blockage. This will improve their workflows and increase sample throughput, reducing both instrument downtime and their running costs. One example of a robust nebulizer that helps to overcome the blockage issues is the inert, high-total-dissolved-solids (high-TDS) Agilent V-groove nebulizer, which is capable of aspirating highly dissolved solids and slurries (up to 30% dissolved solids with a maximum particle size of 350 μm). Its inert construction also ensures that any solvent can be nebulized.In this application note, used diesel engine lubricant oil samples were analyzed using the 5900 SVDV ICP-OES coupled with the AVS 6 and the V-groove nebulizer, following the ASTM D5185-18 standard method.&nbsp;ConclusionThis application note shows the suitability of the Agilent 5900 SVDV ICP-OES used with the Agilent AVS 6 and inert V-groove nebulizer for rapid multi-element analysis of used lubricant oil samples using the ASTM D5185-18 standard method.Excellent long-term stability was demonstrated when more than 1,000 samples were analyzed over a six-hour period (22 to 23 seconds per sample). All measurements of this spiked oil sample were within ± 10% of the expected value, with precision better than 5% RSD in most cases. The spike recovery study showed how the 5900 ICP-OES, used with the inert V-groove nebulizer, can accurately detect low range concentrations of wear metals and high concentrations of the elements from the additive package in a single analysis. The inert V-groove nebulizer also enabled the samples to be run faster, with excellent accuracy.Despite no oxygen injection being used, there were no signs of blockage of the injector of the torch, or carbon deposition after the test. The V-groove nebulizer design reduces sample loading on the plasma, minimizing carbon buildup while maintaining the sensitivity required for the ASTM D5185 standard method. No nebulizer blockage was experienced while collecting the data for this study. The inert V-groove nebulizer allows extended run times by reducing the frequency of torch and nebulizer maintenance. One of the components of LIBs, the anode, accumulates and releases Li ions during charging and discharging. Graphite-based materials are mainly used as the anode material in LIBs. In China, one of the major producers, the analysis of elemental impurities in graphite, which is used as LIB anode material, is required by GB/T 24533-20191) using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES).In this Application News, elemental impurities in LIB anode materials were analyzed using the ICPE-9820. Spike recovery tests were performed to confirm the validity of the analytical values. Additionally, the “Acquisition for All Wavelength” feature allows for checking the presence of elemental impurities that were not subjected to quantitative analysis.ConclusionIn this Application News, an analysis of elemental impurities in LIB anode materials was performed using the ICPE-9820. Good spike recoveries were obtained, confirming the accuracy of the analysis.
