<p>The Faculty of Science was established in 1920 as the fifth faculty of Charles University. It currently has <a href="https://www.natur.cuni.cz/eng/about-the-faculty/organizational-structure"><strong>29 departments</strong></a>, <a href="https://www.natur.cuni.cz/eng/museums-and-collections"><strong>3 museums</strong></a> and a large <a href="https://bz-uk.cz/en"><strong>Botanical Garden</strong></a> where the Study Department and some students’ facilities are located.</p>
<p>Nowadays the faculty is academically and organizationally divided into <strong>four sections: biological, geographical, geological and chemical</strong>. In addition to these sections the faculty has several specialized teaching and research centres, including interdisciplinary institutions such as the Institute for Environmental Studies. All parts of the faculty are active in both teaching and research.</p>
<p>The main mission of the Faculty of Science is to create highly qualified experts in biology, chemistry, geography, geology and in other interdisciplinary fields. Its scientific and research effort aims to solve key problems concerned with the development of human society. Some of the priority long-term subjects are human health, the study of the function and prediction of the development of ecosystems and the biosphere, and the development of environmentally-friendly materials based on the utilization of renewable resources.</p>
<p>The Faculty of Science offers <strong>three educational levels, bachelor, master and doctoral</strong>. All bachelor and master programs include both theoretical teaching and practical exercises in laboratories, and some courses combine the academic studies of natural science with teacher training in a chosen field. Bachelor courses are introductions to deeper studies that follow on in the master’s programs. Master’s study programs train experts for scientific and research institutes, government careers, industry and the private sector. Graduates of the master’s courses with the teacher training element are qualified to teach in secondary schools and secondary vocational schools. Doctoral study programs train highly specialized staff for science and research activities.</p>

<p>Palacký University Olomouc (UP) is an internationally respected and scientifically and academically highly productive university in Central Europe. <p>Palacký University Olomouc also focuses on “third mission” community engagement and service activities via educational and socio-cultural events. It founded a popular science centre, <a href="https://www.pevnostpoznani.cz/english/"><strong>Fort Science</strong></a>, and runs the <a href="https://upoint.upol.cz/en/"><strong>UPoint</strong></a> information centre and shop in the city centre. Since 2021, the university has established a Sustainability Office – <a href="https://udrzitelna.upol.cz/en/"><strong>Sustainable University</strong></a>, has created the UP Sustainable Development Strategy and is responsible for its implementation. Great emphasis is being laid on international relations and internationalisation. In the global university rankings, UP is regularly ranked among the top three Czech universities.</p>

<h3><strong>Introduction</strong></h3>
<p><strong>The Department of Organic Chemistry within the Chemistry Section of the Faculty of Science of Charles University is engaged in teaching and scientific research in the fields of synthetic organic chemistry focused on catalysis, bioorganic and medicinal chemistry, materials chemistry and electrochemistry.</strong></p>

<p><strong>Organic chemistry is a fundamental chemical discipline</strong> that permeates many scientific areas. After graduating in organic chemistry, you can find <strong>employment in classical industrial chemistry and the pharmaceutical industry</strong>. You will also be prepared to work in analytical laboratories.</p>

<p>While <strong>studying</strong> in our department <strong>you will learn the basics of organic synthesis</strong>, which is an important skill for any chemist and hard to catch up on during further study or practice. Even if you change majors in the future, basic synthetic experience is important for a general overview and perspective of chemistry. </p>
<p>In addition to synthesis and its application to various fields of organic chemistry (catalysis, organocatalysis, bioorganic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, materials synthesis, synthetic electrochemistry), we offer a focus toward interdisciplinary collaboration, where you can learn some of the most important analytical methods - gas and liquid chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance, and mass spectrometry - as you investigate new organic reactions.</p>

<p>The Department of Organic Chemistry of the Faculty of Science of the Charles University is involved in teaching in three types of study programmes, both in the form of full-time and combined. These programmes include a basic bachelor&#39;s programme, a follow-up master&#39;s programme and a doctoral programme.</p>

BIOCEV: Biotechnology and Biomedicine Centre of the Academy of Sciences and Charles University in Vestec

<h3><strong>Excellent Science in Favour of Modern Society</strong></h3>
<p>BIOCEV is a joint project of six institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (Institute of Molecular Genetics, Institute of Biotechnology, Institute of Microbiology, Institute of Physiology, Institute of Experimental Medicine, and Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry) and two faculties of Charles University in Prague (Faculty of Science and 1st Faculty of Medicine). The project’s goal is to establish European Centre of Excellence in biomedicine and biotechnology.</p>
<p>In January 2016, the Institute of Biotechnology CAS (IBT) moved to a BIOCEV centre and is involved in two of the five research programmes. IBT wants to take full advantage of this chance to produce cutting-edge scientific results that will be transferred into clinical practice.</p>

<p>The uniqness of the project lies in well-balanced activities and goals set within the three pillars of the knowledge triangle, in BIOCEV supported by modern infrastructure and novel approaches to conducting research, which are based on the experience of top-quality world research institutes.</p>
<h4><strong>Research and development</strong></h4>
<p>Aim: detailed study of cellular mechanisms at the molecular level, research and development of novel therapeutic strategies, early diagnostics, biologically active agents including chemotherapeutics, protein engineering and other technologies with impact on the quality of life, development of knowledge economy and competitive capacity of the Czech Republic.</p>

<p>The idea to establish the new research centre BIOCEV arose in early 2006. At that time the Czech Republic was missing a modern research centre specialized in two prospective domains – biotechnology and biomedicine. As a solution to this situation, the Project BIOCEV came into existence with the planned financial support from the European Structural Funds, namely the Operational programme Research and Development for Innovations.</p>

<p>When Congress writes an environmental law, we implement it by writing regulations. Often, we set national standards that states and tribes enforce through their own regulations. A few examples include conserving water and energy, minimizing greenhouse gases, re-using solid waste, and getting a handle on pesticide risks. <p><strong>The Institute for Nanomaterials, Advanced Technologies and Innovations of the Technical University of Liberec, also known as CXI TUL, was founded in 2009. Our mission is to support TUL's long-term vision of collaboration with industry and innovation. Our experts use state-of-the-art equipment and cutting-edge technology to deliver science at the highest level. We focus on three main research areas: nanomaterials in life sciences, competitive engineering and systems integration.</strong></p><p>CXI TUL prides itself on its applied research, which often takes place in close <strong>collaboration with industrial partners</strong>. These collaborations <strong>account for more than 20% of our annual turnover</strong>. Our team includes more than <strong>160 specialists</strong> working on approximately <strong>70 scientific projects</strong>, with nearly one-sixth of our staff coming from all over the world.</p><p>We have been successful in winning major <strong>European grants</strong> such as <strong>Horizon Europe</strong>, <strong>Digital Europe</strong>, <strong>MSCA</strong>, <strong>Life+</strong> and <strong>Twinning</strong>. We offer <strong>specialised services in microbial safety, nanomaterial development for medicine and cosmetics, and bioremediation</strong>, including analysis of the impact of remediation interventions on microbial communities. We deal with the <strong>synthesis and functionalization of organic and inorganic compounds</strong>, prepare nanoparticles and offer <strong>chemistry consultation</strong>. We are involved in advanced water treatment technologies, membrane bioreactors, biomass carriers, groundwater remediation and nanomaterials in biotechnology, including nanofiber filters for water and air.</li><li><strong>The second research thrust, Competitive Engineering</strong>, focuses on <strong>R&amp;D for the manufacturing and automotive industries</strong> with high application potential. We support industrial activities not only in adjacent regions, focusing on new technologies and processes to increase innovation in industrial production.</li><li><strong>The third research area, System Integration</strong>, focuses on the development of <strong>modern software solutions</strong>, system solutions for <strong>data processing and integration between systems</strong>. <p><strong>Founded in 2011 on the basis of six major Brno universities and research institutions. CEITEC&#39;s main priorities are to maintain a motivating and dynamic international scientific environment, to provide a modern research infrastructure that meets the highest standards, and a policy of open communication and equal opportunities not only now but also in the future.</strong></p>
<h3><strong>Central European Institute of Technology – Masaryk University (CEITEC MU)</strong></h3>
<p> is an independent university institute, which was established at Masaryk University as part of the CEITEC - CEO Center of Excellence. CEITEC MU forms a key part of the state-of-the-art edge research infrastructure, that was built in 2014 at the University Campus in Brno-Bohunice and provides top equipment and optimal conditions for basic and applied research, especially in the field of life sciences. The head of CEITEC MU is Pavel Plevka, Ph.D.</p>
<p>The main priorities of CEITEC are the international dimension of research cooperation and its interdisciplinary character. The connecting element between scientific disciplines is mainly the shared laboratories, which create optimal conditions for solving multidisciplinary questions in the fields of structural biology, genomics and proteomics, molecular medicine, neuroscience, nanotechnology and microtechnology. </p>
<h3><strong>CEITEC Brno University of Technology</strong></h3>
<p>It is part of the CEITEC Centre of Scientific Excellence. Since 2011, it has been a key part of a top research infrastructure with unique equipment and conditions for basic and applied research in the field of advanced nanotechnologies and advanced materials and cybernetics.</p>
<p>There are a total of three areas of research at CEITEC BUT. Our main priorities include not only international research cooperation, but also its interdisciplinary nature. CEITEC Nano shared laboratories operate in an open access mode and provide ideal conditions for solving multidisciplinary issues, as their equipment can also be used by external users, institutions or industry partners. The head of CEITEC BUT is prof. Radimír Vrba.</p>
<p>The 18 research groups currently involved deal with ceramic, advanced polymer, bioelectric, low-dimensional or epitaxial materials, as well as biomaterials. Within the development of new materials, we also have research groups interested in materials characterization and advanced instrumentation per se, and even the development of advanced coatings directly for industry. Researchers at CEITEC BUT are working on the preparation and characterization of nanostructures, molecular nanostructures, nanomagnetism and spintronics or magneto-optical ThZ spectroscopy. They also excel in research on future energies, plasma technologies or experimental biophotonics. Our research focus is also extended to include developments in cybernetics and robotics. </p>
<h3><strong>Central European Institute of Technology - Mendel University in Brno (CEITEC MENDELU)</strong></h3>
<p>is an independent institute at Mendel University which was established within the framework of the CEITEC - Central European Institute of Technology. CEITEC includes the leading Brno universities and two research institutes which joined forces in order to establish a centre of scientific excellence. Director of the CEITEC MENDELU is Mgr.Jan Zouhar, PhD.</p>
<p>Mendel University in Brno is the oldest independent university of agriculture and forestry in the Czech lands. It was established in 1919 as the University of Agriculture in Brno and existed under this name until 1994. Its establishment was the culmination of a long-standing effort to establish an agricultural college in Moravia, which has always been one of the countries with the most advanced agriculture in Central Europe. <h3><strong>Central European Institute of Technology - University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences Brno (CEITEC VETUNI)</strong></h3>
<p>It is an independent higher education institute established at the Veterinary and Pharmaceutical University as part of the scientific centre of excellence CEITEC - Central European Institute of Technology. CEITEC is an inter-university centre in which four major Brno universities and two research institutes based in Brno cooperate. The Director of CEITEC, VETUNI Brno is Prof. MVDr. Jiří Smola, CSc.</p>
<p>The University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences Brno was founded as the College of Veterinary Medicine in December 1918, at that time as the first new university of the Czechoslovak state. In its conception and organisation of teaching, it followed the College of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna. The school consists of three faculties, which in total comprise 28 institutes and 6 clinics.</p>
<h3><strong>Central European Institute of Technology - Institute of Physics of Materials of the Czech Academy of Sciences (CEITEC IPM)</strong></h3>
<p>It is an independent department established at the Institute of Physics of Materials of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic as a part of the scientific centre of excellence CEITEC - Central European Institute of Technology. CEITEC is an inter-university centre in which four major Brno universities and two research institutes based in Brno cooperate. The head of the CEITEC Institute of the Faculty of Science is doc. Ing. Luboš Náhlík, Ph.D.</p>
<p>The activities of CEITEC IPM are focused on the interdisciplinary field of materials science. The focus of its activity lies mainly in basic research of metallic materials. The institute focuses on the physical nature of processes occurring in metallic materials during creep, fatigue and the interaction of creep with fatigue and other types of mechanical loading and on research of the structure and selected physical properties of materials. In both these research areas, the aim is to clarify the relationship between the behaviour and properties of materials and their structural and microstructural characteristics.</p>
<p><strong>Central European Institute of Technology - Veterinary Research Institute (CEITEC VRI)</strong></p>
<p>is an independent department established at the Research Institute of Veterinary Medicine as part of the CEITEC - Central European Institute of Technology scientific centre of excellence. CEITEC is an inter-university centre in which four major Brno universities and two research institutes based in Brno cooperate. The head of CEITEC VRI is MVDr. Martin Anger, Ph.D.</p>
<p>The Research Institute of Veterinary Medicine was founded in 1955 by decision of the Minister of Agriculture as an institute of the then Czechoslovak Academy of Agricultural Sciences. It is the only professional research institute in the Czech Republic focused on research in the field of veterinary medicine with a significant share of applied research. However, its focus also covers a wide area of preclinical veterinary medicine with intersection into human medicine, ecology and other fields.</p>

<h3><strong>Overview</strong></h3>
<p><strong>The Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences (IOCB Prague) is a leading scientific institution in the Czech Republic, recognized internationally. Its primary mission is basic research in the fields of chemical biology and medicinal chemistry, organic and material oriented chemistry, chemistry of natural compounds, biochemistry and molecular biology, physical chemistry, theoretical chemistry, and analytical chemistry.</strong> </p>
<p>Today, over 900 employees including 220 PhD students in 49 research and service groups are involved in a broad spectrum of disciplines, which results in more than 250 publications per year, including papers in the most cited prestigious journals such as Nature or Science.</p>
<p>The Institute’s emphasis on interaction between chemistry and other sciences leads frequently to medicinal applications. An integral part of the mission of the Institute is, therefore, to transfer the scientific results into assets which help people to live better lives. </p>
<p>Together with the research expertise, a system of technology transfer, IP management and commercialization have intensively been built-up. <h3><strong>Highlights</strong></h3>
<p><strong>Successful basic research and modern structure</strong></p>
<p>The quality of IOCB science is regularly and rigorously assessed by an international advisory board comprised of respected authorities from research institutes and universities around the world. IOCB has pioneered a progressive system of junior groups with talented scientists from different countries hired in an open international competition, during which they demonstrate their unique expertise and submit scientific proposals. Every five years, all research groups undergo a complex evaluation that strictly adheres to transparent rules based on scientific merit.</p>
<p><strong>Medicinal chemistry and drug development</strong></p>
<p>IOCB has always been active and successful in applied research and practical applications, particularly in medicinal chemistry. The tradition started in 1969 with an ointment called Dermazulen, which was followed by the development of several human peptide hormones and their analogues (lysin-vasopressin, oxytocin).</p>
<p>From a global perspective, the most significant contributions were acyclic nucleotide phosphonate antivirals (especially tenofovir as a component of Truvada, Atripla, and other anti-HIV and anti-HBV drugs) discovered by Prof. Antonín Holý at IOCB and later developed and marketed by Gilead Sciences, Inc.</p>
<p>Besides this well-known antiviral drug story, several other nucleoside compounds developed at IOCB became approved drugs. These include Decitabine, which is used in the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia, Azacytidine, which targets myelodysplastic syndrome (both discovered by Holý’s peer Dr. Alois Pískala), and 9-(2,3-dihydroxypropyl)adenine (DHPA), an acyclic nucleoside analogue discovered by Holý and used clinically in anti-herpes ointments.</p>
<p><strong>Gilead Sciences Research Centre at IOCB Prague</strong></p>

<p>The unique collaboration between IOCB Prague and Gilead Sciences, Inc. dates back to the 1990s. A partnership program called Gilead Sciences Research Centre at IOCB Prague was established in 2006 for an initial period of five years with an annual donation of $1.1 million to expand IOCB efforts in the field of human disease research. The program was renewed in 2011 and again in 2016 with increased annual funding of $1.35 million.</p>
