Agilent Technologies: <style type="text/css"></style><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_v_groove_nebulizer_5994_7788en_agilent_4ae77b4b3a.pdf">Reducing Instrument Downtime in Elemental Analysis of Lubricant Oils as per ASTM 5185</a></h4><ul><li>Application</li></ul><h5>Run samples faster and for longer using the V-groove nebulizer</h5>AbstractIn this application note, lubricant oil samples were analyzed using an Agilent 5900 Synchronous Vertical Dual View (SVDV) inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) coupled with an Agilent Advanced Valve System 6 (AVS 6) and the Agilent V-groove nebulizer to enable the rapid analysis of over 1,000 samples in 6 hours (more than 160 samples per hour). The V-groove nebulizer provides exceptional performance characteristics, robustness, and durability, even when using troublesome samples. It also provides a reduction in sample loading on the plasma, which reduces carbon formation on the injector of the torch, allowing extended run times, while exceeding the sensitivity requirements required for the ASTM D5185-18 standard method.IntroductionElemental analysis of lubricant and hydraulic oils is essential for predictive and preventive maintenance, as well as trend analysis in many heavy industries. The ASTM D5185‑18 standard method1 is the gold standard in tribology laboratories globally to quantify additive elements, wear metals, and contaminants. This method uses ICP-OES for the rapid elemental determination of 22 elements in both used and unused lubricating and base oils, providing quick screening of used oils for signs of wear.Tribology laboratories typically process hundreds of samples daily; therefore, they are constantly searching for ways to enhance efficiency and improve sample throughput. Instrument downtime caused by blockages in the sample introduction system (SIS) can be a common problem in these high-throughput labs. These blockages are typically caused by suspended particles in the samples blocking the nebulizer, and carbon deposits blocking the injector of the torch. Although various methods exist to remove the blockage from the nebulizer and clean the torch, all require extinguishing the plasma to remove and clean the SIS.The use of a robust nebulizer is a strategy that can enable tribology laboratories to run more samples with reduced blockage. This will improve their workflows and increase sample throughput, reducing both instrument downtime and their running costs. One example of a robust nebulizer that helps to overcome the blockage issues is the inert, high-total-dissolved-solids (high-TDS) Agilent V-groove nebulizer, which is capable of aspirating highly dissolved solids and slurries (up to 30% dissolved solids with a maximum particle size of 350 μm). Its inert construction also ensures that any solvent can be nebulized.In this application note, used diesel engine lubricant oil samples were analyzed using the 5900 SVDV ICP-OES coupled with the AVS 6 and the V-groove nebulizer, following the ASTM D5185-18 standard method.&nbsp;ConclusionThis application note shows the suitability of the Agilent 5900 SVDV ICP-OES used with the Agilent AVS 6 and inert V-groove nebulizer for rapid multi-element analysis of used lubricant oil samples using the ASTM D5185-18 standard method.Excellent long-term stability was demonstrated when more than 1,000 samples were analyzed over a six-hour period (22 to 23 seconds per sample). All measurements of this spiked oil sample were within ± 10% of the expected value, with precision better than 5% RSD in most cases. The spike recovery study showed how the 5900 ICP-OES, used with the inert V-groove nebulizer, can accurately detect low range concentrations of wear metals and high concentrations of the elements from the additive package in a single analysis. The inert V-groove nebulizer also enabled the samples to be run faster, with excellent accuracy.Despite no oxygen injection being used, there were no signs of blockage of the injector of the torch, or carbon deposition after the test. The V-groove nebulizer design reduces sample loading on the plasma, minimizing carbon buildup while maintaining the sensitivity required for the ASTM D5185 standard method. No nebulizer blockage was experienced while collecting the data for this study. The inert V-groove nebulizer allows extended run times by reducing the frequency of torch and nebulizer maintenance. This demonstrates the stability of the 5900 ICP-OES and the suitability of the inert V-groove nebulizer for high-throughput tribology laboratories, by reducing instrument maintenance downtime and improving sample throughput.<h4>2. Halogen analysis is commonly carried out using ion chromatography (IC), whereas argon plasma-based techniques like ICP-MS are less common, due to poor sensitivitiy, and potential spectral interferences. In China, one of the major producers, the analysis of elemental impurities in graphite, which is used as LIB anode material, is required by GB/T 24533-20191) using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES).In this Application News, elemental impurities in LIB anode materials were analyzed using the ICPE-9820. Spike recovery tests were performed to confirm the validity of the analytical values. Additionally, the “Acquisition for All Wavelength” feature allows for checking the presence of elemental impurities that were not subjected to quantitative analysis.ConclusionIn this Application News, an analysis of elemental impurities in LIB anode materials was performed using the ICPE-9820. Good spike recoveries were obtained, confirming the accuracy of the analysis. This yields valuable molecular information and allows the identification of chemicals in a few seconds without consumables or additional chemicals.Generally, this can be used on solids, liquids and gases and of course industrial oils. This method has been widely accepted and is used by automotive industries, drilling companies, legal authorities and even at F1-racing events.Why are in-service lubricating oils tested?To readily assess the lubricant’s performance, testing and diagnosis of oils in-service is necessary. This is especially important to prolong engine life and avoid sudden and unforeseen damages to the engine. Lubricating oils reduce friction and protect the engine’s moving parts from wear and corrosion. In diesel engines, the oil must also suspend soot particle resulting from incomplete fuel combustion to avoid depositions.If the lubricant is saturated, performance decreases significantly. The analysis of in-service oils also provides information about engine-related functions to identify component failures or harmful operating conditions.Advantages of FT-IR in oil analysisFor one, the low cost of modern Fourier transform (FT-IR) systems, along with the ability to obtain high-quality data rapidly has made this technique very attractive. Especially in routine analysis, there is a strong demand for for quick results in routine monitoring of in-service lubricant. FT-IR has already started to gradually replace replace various time-consuming and tedious traditional wet chemical and physical analysis methods.Therefore, the ASTM adopted a standard practice E2412 titled; “Standard Practice for Condition Monitoring of Used Lubricants by Trend Analysis Using Fourier-Transform Infrared (FT-IR) Spectrometry” illustrating the increased application of FT-IR spectroscopy in this field.ConclusionFT-IR is a reliable and valid approach to oil analysis, that not only allows you to access a lot of information with a single measurement, but also simplifies the procedure.Infrared spectrometers come in various shapes and configurations and Bruker even offers a dedicated used oil analysis kit.<h4>2. Following its initial development in 1980, it has seen an unparalleled ramp up, and grew from a high-end tool used in cutting edge research laboratories to a widely-used technique used in many thousands of laboratories across all regions. In 40 years of being available, there have been developments to drive detection limits lower, hyphenation of separation techniques and accessories to allow for direct sampling of solids, increases in productivity and sample throughput, and, most of all, better removal of interferences. This presentation will provide an overview on novel developments in ICP-MS, providing an unmatched ability to tackle samples with outstanding complexity, both in terms of matrix load and interferences.INTRODUCTIONAlongside the technological development, the complexity of samples to be analyzed using ICP-MS increased at the same level, and typical samples run by analytical testing laboratories today require the analysis of matrix levels previously analyzed using ICP-OES. This is particularly true for environmental monitoring, with region-specific standards and guidelines put in place to ensure that soil is safe before any use of the land and to assure that toxic metals are not introduced after anthropogenic activities, such as the release of industrial waste, use of fertilizers, and mining. One key analytical method is U.S. EPA Method 6020B (SW-846), which governs the analysis of soils, solid waste, and wastewaters.CONCLUSIONS<ul><li>All the requirements of EPA Method 6020B were met during the test period of three days, enabling the analysis of a total of 600 samples.</li><li>The accuracy determined by the analyses of two NIST SRMs further highlights the capability of the iCAP RQplus ICP-MS in delivering reliable data.</li><li>The consistent internal standards recovery of 80–120% observed during the analysis of a mixed batch of typical samples, analyzed in a period of 12 hours, demonstrates the robustness of the system and the absence of physical interferences causing signal drift and suppression or enhancement.</li><li>The highest dilution setting available for AGD allowed the aspiration of up to 25% w/w brine samples and allowed excellent MDLs to be obtained, while eliminating the need for labor-intensive manual sample dilution and accelerating sample throughput.</li><li>Excellent CCV recovery and spike recovery results, as well as stable and consistent internal standards response, were obtained across a batch containing 120 samples of a 2.5% w/w brine solution, demonstrating the reliability of the method.</li></ul><h4>3. Tracking these color changes is achievable using temperature-controlled UV-Vis spectroscopy. However, the experiment requires efficient temperature control, cuvette stirring, and rapid acquisition speed due to the millisecond timescale of the color changes.In this work, an Agilent Cary 3500 UV-Vis spectrophotometer was used to investigate this reaction at four different temperatures simultaneously. The system's fast data collection and accurate temperature control enabled efficient characterization of complex reaction kinetics.IntroductionThe Briggs-Rauscher reaction is one of the most captivating demonstrations that a chemist can perform.1 It is an oscillating reaction that cycles through multiple color changes for several minutes, providing a visual example of how chemicals transform in real time (see Figure 1). The reaction involves several chemicals, as described in the sample preparation section of the note. When the reagents are mixed, the clear and translucent solution gradually turns amber before undergoing a striking color change to dark blue. The blue color then gradually fades back to the colorless state. This cycle continues for several minutes until all reagents are consumed.ConclusionAn in-depth investigation of the kinetics of the Briggs-Rauscher oscillation reaction was carried out at four different temperatures simultaneously using the Agilent Cary 3500 UV-Vis spectrophotometer with Multicell Peltier sampling module. The unique multizone feature of the Peltier temperature controlled Multicell facilitated the multizone experiments of four pairs of cuvettes. Each pair of cuvettes contained the reagents and reference solutions.The scan kinetic experiments identified chromophores associated with different intermediates in the reaction, enabling the selection of the most suitable wavelength (610 nm) for single point kinetic measurements of the oscillating reaction. The kinetic measurement results at four temperatures (5, 10, 20, and 30 °C) showed that the oscillating cycle shortened with increasing temperature. To better understand the effect of each temperature on the Briggs-Rauscher oscillation, the data were used to build an Arrhenius plot. The plot was then used to calculate the activation energy, resulting in a calculated value of 58 kJ/mol for the overall reaction. The Cary 3500 UV-Vis spectrophotometer with Multicell Peltier sampling module saves time, while producing valuable data that contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of complex reactions.<h4>4. Particularly, the adverse effects of increased heavy metal concentrations in wastewater and the potential effects on human, animal and plant health are of significant concern. Therefore, monitoring these elements in wastewater is one of the most frequently performed environmental analyses.The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency published EPA Method 6020B to control 23 metals in environmental water using ICP-MS. In this Application News, 23 elements in wastewater were analyzed using the ICPMS-2050. Analytical samples’ spike recovery tests and long-term stability tests were performed in accordance with the quality control (QC) requirements of EPA Method 6020b.SummaryAn ICPMS-2050 was used to analyze 23 elements in wastewater following U.S. EPA Method 6020B. All the analyses met the QC requirements of EPA Method 6020B, confirming the analytical method’s usefulness.IDLs obtained in this analysis were sufficiently low compared with the standard values of each regulation for wastewater analysis, and high-sensitivity analysis was realized. In the spike recovery test with SIC solution and samples, good recoveries were obtained, confirming the accuracy of ICPMS-2050.In the long-term stability test, the CCV recoveries of all the analytes were within 90 to 110 %. Furthermore, the fluctuation of all internal standards with respect to the intensity during the initial calibration was within the QC requirements of EPA Method 6020B, indicating the high stability of the ICPMS-2050 system.The ICPMS-2050 mini-torch system provides accurate analysis, high stability, low argon gas consumption and low running costs.

But not all ICP-MS systems are equally suited to the needs of commercial laboratories.Agilent’s 7850 and 7900 ICP-MS systems provide a powerful, integrated solution for the most demanding applications. Software tools, auto-optimization, and method/report templates streamline setup and routine operation, while high matrix tolerance, simple, reliable helium cell gas mode, and wide dynamic range simplify routine analysis of varied sample types.In this Technical Overview, we show how productivity gains and long-lifetime consumables contribute to making Agilent ICP-MS instruments the ideal choice for high-throughput commercial laboratories.System SuitabilityThe Agilent 7900 single quadrupole ICP-MS is optimized to deliver the high levels of performance needed for more difficult applications. As a result, the detector settings and thresholds are set to achieve the high sensitivity typically required in these demanding applications. Even so, for a typical suite of around 40 analytes and internal standard (ISTD) elements, the EM lifetime calculations indicate that a laboratory running 300 drinking water samples per day and operating 20 days per month can expect their Agilent 7900 ICP-MS EM detector will typically last more than 10 years. Even laboratories running high matrix samples with analyte levels between 100 ug/L (ppb) and 10 mg/L (ppm) can expect almost 6 years of operation from their Agilent 7900 ICP-MS detector.The Agilent 7850 single quadrupole ICP-MS is optimized for more routine applications, where factors such as stability, sample throughput and low operating costs are typically more important than achieving the highest sensitivity. Consequently, the detector settings and thresholds of the 7850 detector are optimized for extended life with lower sensitivity than on the 7900. This means that the lifetime of the EM detector used in the Agilent 7850 ICP-MS is typically around twice as long as the figures quoted above for the EM detector used in the 7900.As well as the lower cost of replacement detectors, this long lifetime also contributes to reduced maintenance downtime, further enhancing productivity.<h4>2. The small exposure times, when coupled with the Step Ahead feature of the autosampler, help realize a run time of only 36 s per sample (inlcuding uptake, analysis, and rinse) without the use of a discrete sampling valve. The method has been validated using standard reference materials, spike tests and a &gt;5 hours long robustness test including &gt;500 samples and regular QC checks. If the location is favorable, then the conversion of inorganic mercury to the significantly more toxic organic form of methylmercury happens.The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has laid down limits of 1.0 mg/kg for total mercury and 0.25 mg/kg CH3Hg in food products2). To meet these limits ICP-MS is widely used as an accurate and reliable technique for quantification. In the present study, one honey sample was analyzed using Shimadzu ICPMS-2030 for quantitation of total and inorganic mercury along with quantification of methyl mercury by coupling ICPMS-2030 to HPLC as a speciation technique.ConclusionThe present work demonstrates the suitability of the HPLC-ICP-MS method for the quantification of inorganic mercury and methylmercury in honey, in accordance with FSSAI regulations. In this application note the new Thermo Scientific™ iCAP™ MSX ICP-MS was used for the analysis of soils, sludges, and sediments. Argon Gas Dilution (AGD) reduced the manual work involved in sample dilution, and at the same time, enhanced the overall matrix tolerance of the system to different environmental samples. This study demonstrates how AGD can be used to readily deliver repeatable and reliable results with high accuracy and sensitivity in laboratories tasked to analyze high sample loads.ConclusionsThe iCAP MSX ICP-MS is an excellent choice for laboratories performing soil and sediment digests with varying compositions. It provides the robustness and matrix tolerance needed to analyze the often challenging samples, yet at the same time provides the sensitivity required to detect important contaminants at relevant levels. The integrated argon gas dilution for controlled and automatic dilution of the sample aerosol effectively minimizes matrix effects without the need for laborious additional sample preparation. Robustness combined with accuracy and high sensitivity, enabling the analysis of several major as well as trace elements in soil samples with high reliability, makes this method an ideal option for seamless analysis of hundreds of soil samples daily. The most important results of this study are summarized below:<ul><li>The use of AGD Level 10 combined with KED mode measurements yielded excellent linearity, wide linear dynamic range, high sensitivity, and interference free data for a range of different elements in soil samples.</li><li>Online sample dilution using integrated AGD offers an automatic solution for diluting soil sample digests to the desired extent and results in accurate and reliable analysis with minimal to no matrix induced signal variation.</li><li>The accuracy of the method is confirmed by the SRM recoveries as well as the stable QC analyte response which were both found to be within 80–120% for the different analytes on repeated analysis over several hours.</li><li>The internal standard recoveries remained stable and extremely consistent within 80–120% throughout the 8-hour robustness test, proving that a reliable uninterrupted and robust high-quality analysis of different types of soil samples can be easily carried out using the iCAP MSX ICP-MS</li></ul><h4>2. There is no need for sample or container preparation before scanning a the contents of a container using the ID verification feature of the Vaya. Users are simply asked to place the Vaya directly against the container and initiate the process. The instrument remains stationary during the spectrum acquisition phase. On average, the scanning time for through‑transparent is 10 to 15 seconds, and for opaque containers, 35 to 40 seconds. The Vaya Raman raw material identity verification system, with its rapid analysis times and capability to measure through both transparent and opaque containers, is perfectly adapted for handling large quantities of raw materials used in the formulation of cosmetic products. It enables immediate identification of raw materials in quarantine upon receipt. For example, the changing of a color from exposure to light is called photochromism, from heat is called thermochromism, and from a change in solvent polarity is called solvatochromism. These chromotropic phenomena have everyday applications, such as checking moisture absorption with silica gel and the printing of receipts. While UV-Vis spectrophotometers are used to measure these phenomena quantitatively, they require additional equipment depending on the type of external stimulus causing the color change. So while, solvatochromism can be measured without additional equipment, measuring thermochromism requires a device to heat the sample. (Application News 01-00016 describes using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer to measure thermochromism in a solid sample.) Measuring photochromism requires irradiating the sample with light, which can be performed using Shimadzu’s dedicated photoreaction evaluation system called Lightway. More detailed information about Lightway can be found in Application News No. A625. This Application News describes an evaluation of the solvatochromism and thermochromism of a metal complex solution. To measure the thermochromism, a thermoelectrically temperature-controlled cell holder (TCC-100) and a six-cell thermoelectrically temperature-controlled cell positioner (CPS-100) were used. 1ConclusionThis Application News evaluated the solvatochromism and thermochromism of solutions of cobalt chloride. The changing of colors due to solvatochromism was evaluated quantitatively using the optional color calculation software for LabSolutions UV-Vis. The TCC-100 enabled the examination of thermochromism over the wide temperature range of 10 to 50 °C. The CPS-100, which can control the temperature of multiple samples concurrently, enabled a more efficient investigation of thermochromism. This shows how selecting the right equipment for the application enables optimal temperature-controlled measurements.

An automatized and reproducible acid digestion sample preparation combined with a sensitive and robust method based on triple quadrupole ICP-MS allows a wide range of trace elements present in the samples to be quantified without any compromise in respect to applicable regulations.IntroductionMany countries have established their own regulations and guidelines to ensure the safety and quality of baby food products. These regulations are generally based on scientific research and risk assessments conducted by health and food safety authorities. Among a range of other contaminants, toxic heavy metals, such as lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury, are subject to screening. Infants and young children up to the age of three represent an especially vulnerable group susceptible to different illnesses and potential lifelong neurological damage through exposure to toxic heavy metals.The Baby Food Safety Act of 2021 requires manufacturers and the FDA to take long overdue action by setting maximum levels of inorganic arsenic (10 μg∙kg-1, 15 μg∙kg-1 for cereal), lead (5 μg∙kg-1, 10 μg∙kg-1 for cereal), cadmium (5 μg∙kg-1, 10 μg∙kg-1 for cereal), and mercury (2 μg∙kg-1) allowed in baby food.Since January 2022, baby food manufacturers need to meet these maximum levels for toxic elements by testing their final products (because only ingredient testing significantly underestimates toxic heavy metal levels in the final product), and to post the results of their product testing online twice per year. Similarly, as the FDA is working on a “closer to zero plan”, the European Union has established regulations and maximum limits for various contaminants, including toxic elements, in baby food.Moreover, essential minerals like iron, zinc, copper, calcium, and magnesium are important for the healthy growth and development of infants. Monitoring their levels ensures that the baby food provides adequate nutrition. Depending on the specific formulation and ingredients of the baby food, additional trace elements such as selenium, manganese, chromium, and molybdenum may also be analyzed to assess their levels and potential impact on infant health.ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry) is the commonly used analytical technique to measure trace elements in various samples, including baby food. The specific trace elements to be checked by ICP-MS in baby food may vary depending on the purpose of the analysis and the specific concerns related to the safety and quality of the product.In this study, toxic elements but also essential minerals will be determined to give an overview of elements present in a variety of baby food products.ConclusionThis workflow, combining sample preparation using microwave assisted digestion and analysis using the iCAP MTX ICP-MS, allows accurate measurement of the concentration of toxic elements, dangerous for children, as well as the essential elements, necessary for the good growth and health of children, in various baby food products.The automatic and constant 5-times dilution allows robust analysis of different types of baby food products, whether dry, liquid, or fatty, without any compromise on sensitivity to reach the regulated limits. Data was acquired using Thermo Scientific™ Qtegra™ Intelligent Scientific Data Solution™ (ISDS) Software and processed using Iolite™ Laser Ablation Data Reduction Software.Results: A series of tooth samples containing a range of elements in localized phases was analyzed to demonstrate the ease of coupling to a commercially available high-speed mapping laser ablation system, ease of dwell-time optimization for best signal-to-background ratio and image contrast across all scanned elements, and finally fast analysis times from sampling to image.<h5>CONCLUSIONS</h5>Through careful optimization of laser ablation and ICP-MS parameters, it is possible to generate high quality multi-elemental images at a fast rate. The use of new low-dispersion laser ablation cells and aerosol transfer technology is not limited to simultaneous mass spectrometers and is also applicable to sequential scanning mass spectrometers such as Quadrupole ICP-MS.The major limitation of coupling low-dispersion Laser Ablation systems to sequential mass spectrometers is the limited number of elements that can be scanned; however, this is offset by the sensitivity and the specificity of, especially, triple quadrupole ICP-MS systems for the reduction of interferences on select analytes.Most imaging experiments can be reduced to three or four analytes of interest, and in these cases LA-ICP-MS coupled to Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS using a low-dispersion, fast imaging setup can provide the analytical data quality required to answer challenging research questions.<h4>2. These data were combined with amniotic fluid microbiota (approximately 250 species of microorganisms) measured using a miniature next-generation sequencer (MinION Mk1C System, Oxford Nanopore Technologies, Inc.) and 16 items of labor data (e.g., neonatal weight) to analyze differences between preterm and normal births. Volcano plot and metabolic pathway analyses were performed using Multi-omics Analysis Package based on the 740 items detected. In this application, we introduce an example of multi-omics analysis conducted by gender and time series.IntroductionPreterm delivery refers to delivery at a gestational age of 22 weeks or less than 37 weeks, which can have a significant impact on the health and development of the newborn and the life of the family. This problem occurs worldwide: in 2020, 1/10 of all births were preterm1) (Fig. 1). Prematurity is the leading cause of early childhood mortality, so there is an urgent need to promote research on preterm birth.However, the global rate of premature birth reduction from 2010 to 2020 was only 0.14 %, indicating that the birth cycle has not improved. It is known that preterm birth is closely related to amniotic fluid, and it is used as a research object in preterm birth2). Amniotic fluid is approximately 500 mL of water, contains fetal urine, sloughed cells, inflammatory substances, etc., and is a valuable source of information for understanding fetal growth and health3). Measuring metabolites in amniotic fluid helps assess the fetus's metabolic activity and nutritional status. Elemental measurements can also determine the extent of fetal development and environmental exposure. It is also essential to measure the bacterial flora in the amniotic fluid. It has been found that about 80 % of preterm births occur in pregnant women who have a chain of bacterial infections from the vagina to the uterus and from the uterus to the amniotic fluid 4).In this study, we used a gas chromatograph mass spectrometer GCMS-TQ8040 NX, an energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer EDX-7200, and a miniature next-generation sequencer MinION Mk1C to measure primary metabolites, elements, and flora in the amniotic fluid of preterm and term pregnant women (Fig. 2). These data were combined with 16 birth delivery data items (e.g., female age, newborn weight, etc.), and the differences in amniotic fluid content between preterm and term births were visualized using Multi-omics Analysis Package.ConclusionAmniotic fluid from 6 pregnant women (3 preterm births and 3 term births) was measured using a next-generation sequencer (MinION Systems, Oxford Nanopore Technologies, Inc.), a gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GCMS-TQ8040 NX), and an energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (EDX-7200) to evaluate the intestinal microbiota (approximately 250 species of microorganisms), metabolites (approximately 500 components), and elements (approximately 80 elements). Metabolic pathway analysis was performed using Multi-omics Analysis Package based on approximately 700 items detected.In metabolic pathway analysis, not only the accumulated amount of metabolites, but also the ratio of product/substrate or its reciprocal substrate/product was automatically created in Multi-omics Analysis Package and used as a new variable to be read into class cluster analysis, etc., thereby enabling statistical analysis from a perspective different from the accumulated amount.<h4>3. This control is achieved by adjusting the incident beam using apertures within the spectrophotometer that can be customized to meet the specific requirements of the application.In this work, an Agilent Cary 7000 UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometer that includes the Agilent Cary Universal Measurement Accessory (UMA) was used. The degree of beam collimation was investigated using different apertures within the UMA to enhance data quality for the determination of the edge steepness of an optical filter.ConclusionCharacterizing the edge steepness of optical filters is an important measurement for manufacturers and users of these types of devices. The steeper the edge, the better the quality of the filter, so careful determination of edge steepness is required to differentiate between high and low quality filters. Accurate measurements depend on the half cone angle of the apertures used in spectrophotometers to control the degree of collimation.This study has shown that the degree of collimation on the Agilent Cary 7000 Universal Measurement Spectrophotometer (UMS) that includes the Agilent Cary Universal Measurement Accessory (UMA) can be controlled precisely using different horizontal apertures ranging from 0.25 to 3°.Exploring the use of higher f-number optics in the incident beam of the UMA can lead to improved sensitivity and accuracy in various spectroscopic applications. This performance was demonstrated by the investigation of the edge steepness of a beam splitter. The best data were acquired by the Cary UMA with collimation control using a 0.25° (f/35) horizontal aperture.The UMA with optimized and controlled beam collimation enables the complete characterization of optical samples, ensuring optimal performance of final components.<h4>4. However, a reduction of the alcohol content by dilution makes the analysis possible without major changes to the sample introduction system (i.e., addition of oxygen to the plasma). Spectral and physical interferences however need to be considered. First, the remaining alcohol content changes the viscosity of the sample solutions and will therefore affect flow rates and nebulization efficiency in the sample introduction system. This can be addressed by preparation of matrix-matched calibration standards. Another reason to use matrix-matched calibration standards is the fact that analytes like arsenic and selenium are prone to signal enhancement in the presence of carbon and may therefore lead to false positive results if this is not compensated for. Last but not least, carbon can contribute to the formation of polyatomic interferences, such as 40Ar12C+ on 52Cr.ConclusionThis study demonstrates that whisky, as well as other alcoholic beverages, can be analyzed for its complete trace elemental profile using the iCAP MSX ICP-MS following a simple dilution. The high robustness of the plasma as well as the re-designed sample introduction system allows solutions containing approximately 10 vol% of EtOH to be aspirated. Only minor changes to the sample introduction configuration were made to maximize sensitivity and account for the expected lower nebulizer flow rate. The data specifically demonstrates the high sensitivity of the instrument and its ability to remove polyatomic interferences. This is the EPA’s official compendium of analytical and sampling methods that have been evaluated and approved for use by waste management programs to comply with RCRA regulations. The SW-846 compendium functions primarily as a guidance document setting forth acceptable, although not required, methods for the regulated and regulatory communities to use in response to RCRA-related sampling and analysis requirements. SW-846 is a multi-volume document that changes over time as new information and data are developed. This application note will discuss the workflow developed for the analysis of different types of water, wastewater, and digested soil samples using the iCAP MSX ICP-MS, which offers a comprehensive solution for effective and reliable analysis of high dissolved solid containing samples. To verify the consistent performance of the instrument over time, a sequence of 240 samples was repeated over two consecutive days resulting in a total of 480 samples analyzed.SummaryThe iCAP MSX ICP-MS was extensively tested for compliance with EPA Method 6020B. The quality of the analytical data obtained over two consecutive days of measurements demonstrated that the built-in Argon Gas Dilution system for controlled and automatic dilution of the sample aerosol is a powerful solution for laboratories analyzing demanding samples, such as soil digests or wastewater, under high-throughput conditions. The overall performance of the instrument suggests that reliable analysis of these types of samples can be performed without need of any maintenance and with no instrument downtime over three or more days of analytical work. Some of the important outcomes of this study are summarized below:<ul><li>All the requirements of EPA Method 6020B were met during the test period of two days, enabling the analysis of a total of 480 samples.</li><li>The instrument detection limits (IDLs) and lower limits of quantification (LLOQs) achieved met and exceeded the requirements given in the method, which suggests that the employed methodology, with its optimized argon gas sample dilution, is suitable for achieving the required robustness and instrument sensitivity for these types of samples.</li><li>Results observed during analysis of ICB and CCB QC standards indicate that the proposed method ensures minimum carryover between samples, enabling trouble-free measurement of high matrix samples across the full calibrated concentration range.</li><li>The accuracy obtained for ICV and CCV standard solutions ensures the reliability and consistency of instrument performance while analyzing challenging high TDS containing samples such as wastewater and solid waste digests.</li><li>The analytical data obtained during analysis of interference check solutions (ICSA and ICSAB) highlight the effectiveness of single KED mode using helium as collision gas in removing potential polyatomic interferences on each analyte, ensuring interference-free analysis every time.</li><li>The data obtained during analysis of matrix spiked and duplicate measurements demonstrate that minimal or no matrix effect was encountered when analyzing complex matrices such as wastewater.</li><li>The observed behavior of the internal standards on two consecutive days of analysis highlights the robustness and consistency of the instrument performance. Ferrous materials are based on iron as the main component, and therefore include different types of steel (i.e., cast iron or stainless steel). This leads to properties such as high temperature resistance as well as the potential for being recycled easily. On the contrary, non-ferrous materials do not contain iron and refer to metals such as aluminium, copper, or zinc, and alloys such as brass.Both ferrous and non-ferrous materials play crucial roles in various industries, such as modern architecture and construction, automotive, aerospace, electronics, and (clean) energy generation. Understanding the characteristics, properties, and potential impact of processing techniques is essential for metallurgical engineers to design and produce high-quality products for different applications. The exact composition, including major components, additives, and trace impurities, needs to be thoroughly determined to ensure the final product meets the performance requirements in terms of corrosion and heat resistance, conductivity, or formability.Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is often the technique of choice for the determination of impurities at trace and ultra-trace levels due to its outstanding sensitivity. As a full multi-elemental analysis can be accomplished in only a few minutes, it also allows high sample throughput. However, ICP-MS is also well known for its historically limited ability to analyze samples with elevated matrix load. The sample matrix could significantly affect the sensitivity of the instrument, cause intensity fluctuation of the internal standard (suppression and drift), and lead to increased system maintenance with unwanted downtime due to obstruction of the interface cones, torch and injector, or the nebulizer. To overcome this limitation, samples must be diluted, either using liquid diluents or using argon gas provided directly from the instrument itself.This application note focuses on the development of a fast, robust, and accurate method for the analysis of bulk and trace elements in ferrous and non-ferrous materials using the Thermo Scientific™ iCAP™ MSX ICP-MS with Argon Gas Dilution (AGD).ConclusionsThe iCAP MSX ICP-MS was used to analyze 20 elements in digested nickel superalloys certified reference materials, as well as selected single element standard solutions containing 1,000 mg·L-1 of elements typically used for the preparation of non-ferrous materials and alloys. Among the analytes, several critical interferences can cause unexpected bias, however He KED mode allowed consistent removal in most cases. However, sample preparation for these test and analysis methods requires a lot of work, such as component extraction with reagents and acidic cleavage, and in the case of the staining method, individual differences in judgment have become an issue in production process and quality control. For this reason, we propose a method using energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRF), which enables simple analysis in the entire process from sample preparation to measurement and judgment.In general, quantitation by EDXRF at levels below 1 ppm is difficult, as shown in Table 1, because these values are around or below the limit of quantitation. However, in the case of powdered milk, the standard values for the powder form before dissolution in hot water are about 7.7 times higher than the values shown in Table 1. This means that a screening analysis to determine whether the concentration is below the standard value or not is possible with EDXRF, which can analyze powders as-is.Since the sensitivity of the ALTRACE for heavy metal elements was substantially improved in comparison with the conventional EDXRF (EDX-7000) by installing a high output X-ray tube, it is now possible to analyze samples with same sensitivity as the conventional instrument in only 1/10 the measurement time.ConclusionExcellent results were obtained for both the calibration curves and the analysis results of powdered milk. In an argon plasma, complete ionization is typically only achieved for elements with ionization potentials below 6 eV, such as alkaline and alkaline earth elements. Typical transition metals, precious metals, and rare earth elements still ionize at close to 100%. However, semi-metals and in particular non-metals, like silicon, sulfur, or halogens, will only poorly ionize. At the same time, their signals are found in the low mass range (often below m/z 50), where many ions are lost in the transition through the mass spectrometer. In addition, other factors may significantly impact the analysis, for example, isobaric and polyatomic interferences leading to bias on the most abundant isotope for a given element, and hence forcing analysts to often select a less sensitive, but interference-free alternative. Especially polyatomic interferences are abundant in the low mass range and may render the analysis using ICP-MS nearly impossible.The analysis of halogens is of importance in a variety of sample matrices pertaining to different industries, such as environmental monitoring, pharmaceuticals, oil and gas, and industrial applications such as Li-ion battery and renewable fuels. Ion chromatography (IC) is a commonly used technique for analysis of halogens, whereas argon plasma-based techniques, like ICP-OES or ICP-MS, have limited applications for this purpose. However, its outstanding characteristics as an element selective detection system have led to the development of applications highly complementary to chromatographic techniques, for example, for the detection of PFAS.This note describes the analytical workflows developed with the Thermo Scientific™ iCAP™ MTX ICP-MS to mitigate these analytical challenges associated with the analysis of halogens using ICP-MS.ConclusionThis document highlights how triple quadrupole ICP-MS, such as the iCAP MTX ICP-MS operated in TQ-O2 mode, can be used for accurate and precise quantification of challenging analytes such as chlorine, bromine, and iodine, which can be analyzed directly using optimized instrument conditions. It further highlights the feasibility of the iCAP MTX ICP-MS for indirect but accurate and precise determination of fluorine after complex formation with barium under optimized and controlled conditions. It further summarizes details of iodine (127I) analysis using helium as cell gas in SQ-KED mode. However, joining parts with dissimilar properties can cause defects from heat, vibration, or other factors present during manufacturing processes or product use. In particular, rubber can potentially deteriorate at metal contact surfaces due to high metal temperatures without showing any symptoms significant enough for the deterioration to be discovered. Consequently, non-destructive inspections are required to evaluate deterioration and defects before they appear.X-ray CT systems offer one type of non-destructive inspection. They can visually show the internal status of joined metal-rubber parts in order to assess the position and shape of internal defects without damaging the part. This article describes using an inspeXio SMX-225CT FPD HR Plus microfocus X-ray CT system (Fig. 1) to observe rollers made with rubber joined to metal.Conclusionhis article describes using an inspeXio SMX-225CT FPD HR Plus microfocus X-ray CT system to scan rollers made of rubber bonded to metal.The system enables non-destructive discovery of rubber deterioration and debonding, regardless of whether or not the exterior appears normal. The progression of rubber deterioration can be observed by detailed observations of cross-sectional images or by comparing the volumes of deteriorated portions. Color-coding the deteriorated or debonded areas can &nbsp;provide a 3D understanding of the position and shape of those areas. Thus, X-ray CT imaging provides a useful way to inspect the quality of parts made with rubber bonded to metal.<h4>4.
