The 19th Czech - Slovak Spectroscopis Conference (19th CSSC) is a proceeding based on a long-term scientific cooperation between Ioannes Marcus Marci Spectroscopic Society and The Slovak Spectroscopic Society. The meetings organized by the former Czechoslovak spectroscopic society (1949 – 1993) in the past and the continuation in this tradition in the form national Slovak and Czech spectroscopic conferences now, since 2008, exist as a joint event.The Czech spectroscopic conference was repeated every four years, while the Slovak spectroscopic conference took place biannually. Joint scientific meetings are now held every two years, alternating between the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The order may change if this conference is combined with the European Symposium on Analytical Spectrometry (ESAS). <h4>The problem&nbsp;</h4>We live in a “global village” but we are all different and we use many different languages to communicate.&nbsp;Even when people speak the same language, the same words may be used with different meanings. See, for example, some different uses of the word “standard” in English – a normative document, a solution of known concentration or even a type of flag.&nbsp;Even in the same area of activity misunderstandings do occur which may result in a waste of time and money, or even worse consequences.&nbsp;When talking about laboratory tests, lack of a full understanding of key terms and inappropriate translations leaves room for different interpretations of stated requirements. For example, there have historically been a number of different but related uses of the term ‘detection limit’. This may lead to inadequate fulfilment of those requirements, thus becoming an obstacle to the production of analytical data that is fit for its intended use. A shared interpretation of concepts related to quality in measurement between laboratories and accreditation bodies is also crucial for a fair and harmonised approach to laboratory assessment across the world.&nbsp;<h4>A common language&nbsp;</h4>We need a common language; clear and unambiguous. We need a common vocabulary to provide consistent definitions of concepts with their associated terms. To this end, several organisations participate in a joint effort to develop and maintain an international vocabulary of metrology (VIM) [1], which aims to achieve a unique understanding of concepts related to measurements across all sectors. The VIM is a normative reference in the standards ISO/IEC 17025, ISO 15189 and ISO/IEC 17043, and is therefore a key document for all organisations seeking accreditation.&nbsp;<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/Eurachem_You_talk_we_understand_The_way_out_of_the_tower_of_Babel_Standards_8d947dbd5f.jpg" alt="Eurachem: You talk, we understand – The way out of the tower of Babel_A common language" srcset="https://storage.googleapis.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/thumbnail_Eurachem_You_talk_we_understand_The_way_out_of_the_tower_of_Babel_Standards_8d947dbd5f.jpg 245w," sizes="100vw" width="1126" height="499"><h4>Is this enough?&nbsp;</h4>For laboratory staff some problems still stand and need to be addressed:&nbsp;<ul><li>Many people are confused about both concepts and terms.&nbsp;</li><li>It may be difficult to understand the “formal” VIM definitions – they are short statements intended to apply to many different measurement sectors.</li><li>Translations into local languages may add to the confusion, e.g. if different terms are used in different sectors for the same VIM concept and the translator overlooks this issue.</li><li>Some substantial changes to terminology have been made in an attempt to accommodate chemical and biological measurements. Some “old” concepts still stand but have new names, e.g. “within laboratory reproducibility” vs. “intermediate precision”.&nbsp;</li></ul>To address these issues Eurachem has produced a guide [2] which provides an accessible reference containing simple and in context explanations of terms most relevant to analysts, with additional examples relating those concepts to chemical and biological measurements.&nbsp;<h4>Do you understand the meaning of these terms?&nbsp;</h4>Are you interested in a quantity or a quality? Depending on the answer, will you use a measurement procedure or an examination? Is method verification the same or less demanding than method validation? Do you need a calibration or just performance verification? Do you have a measurement standard in your laboratory? Is metrological traceability something you worry about? The electrochemical processes that take place in batteries, whether under load or at rest, give rise to heat exchange with the surroundings. These processes include redox reactions at the anode and cathode, the shuttling of lithium ions between electrodes, and the various parasitic side reactions that are responsible for limiting the lifetime of a battery.
Screening new cell chemistries using traditional electrochemical methods is a time-prohibitive process that significantly slows the pace of research. These methods involve cycling the cell until signs of degradation or sufficient capacity fade are evident, and typically take months to complete. In-operando isothermal microcalorimetry is an established but underutilized technique for measuring the activity of parasitic, or non-reversible reactions during charge cycling to provide insights for accelerating battery research.

Thermal Analysis is a useful tool for investigating pharmaceutical substances for effects such as polymorphism, purity and composition, phase shifts, and stability. The four main techniques of DSC, TGA, TMA, and DMA are ideal for carrying out these investigations over a wide temperature range, from -150 to 1600 °C.
Important Effects and Properties Measured by Thermal Analysis

<li>DSC: The most important effects that can be analyzed are the melting point, melting range and melting behavior. This technique is also used to determine the heat of fusion, purity, polymorphism, the glass transition, and oxidation stability.</li>

<h4>OIT Measurements</h4>
The OIT test is a standardized isothermal measurement performed with a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) to measure the resistance of a material to oxidation. She then joined Sika Technology AG in Zurich, Switzerland, as an analytical chemist. In 2007, she joined METTLER TOLEDO and has worked there since as an application specialist for Thermal Analysis. In her present position, she uses, teaches, and supports DSC, TGA, TMA, and DMA instruments for the METTLER TOLEDO’s Materials Characterization Group located at the head office in Switzerland.

In many technical processes, material behaviors depend on the applied heating or cooling rates. For example, when investigating crystallization behavior that occurs during the injection molding process, it is essential to replicate the heating rates experienced during the actual process. To perform such experiments, extremely high heating and cooling rates are required, which cannot be achieved using conventional DSC instruments. As a result, fast-scanning calorimetry was developed.

The Flash DSC uses innovative technology to perform fast-scanning calorimetry with ultra-high heating and cooling rates of up to 3,000,000 K per second, in the temperature range of -95 to +1000 °C. This allows measurements to be performed that are not possible using conventional DSC, often revealing hidden properties of a material. It is ideal for investigating rapid crystallization and reorganization behaviors.

<div>Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) is an ideal tool for the characterization of all kinds of organic and inorganic solids and liquids. Thermodynamic transitions, thermal stability, decomposition and chemical reactions can be detected and quantified with high accuracy over a broad temperature range. However, this method does not provide details about the chemistry behind the processes under study.The combination of thermal analysis with infrared spectroscopy bridges this analytical gap. Fourier-Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy is a classical tool for the identification and quantification of gases. This technique is based on the interaction of infrared radiation with the vibrating dipole moments of molecules. FT-IR yields a unique IR spectrum for each substance, except for homonuclear diatomic gases and pure metalsIn a simple case, only one type of gas molecule is evolved with an applied temperature increase in the TGA. The evolved gas is flowed into the FT-IR and can be readily identified by searching its spectrum against a gas phase reference library. In a typical decomposition process, evolved fume is a mixture of gases.
