In high-throughput LIB manufacturing facilities, even minor inconsistencies in raw materials can lead to significant downstream effects on cell performance. Binders are a good example: although used in small quantities to adhere active materials to metal current collectors, they are critical to electrode functionality. Binders directly influence electrode mechanical strength, uniformity, and long-term cell performance. As a result, production engineers and quality control (QC) managers consider binder verification as a key part of quality assurance (QA) workflows.&nbsp;Traditional binders such as polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) are effective but introduce environmental and solvent-handling concerns. Alternatives such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) are increasingly being adopted within the industry to align with evolving sustainability standards. However, these changes also introduce new risks for LIB manufacturers — particularly when material specifications vary or supply sources change. To maintain production consistency and reduce the risk of batch failure or rework, fast and accurate material identification and verification tools are needed. FTIR spectroscopy offers a simple yet powerful solution for the QA/QC of various LIB raw materials. Given the organic and polymeric nature of binders, FTIR spectroscopy offers a rapid and reliable means of identifying them, as discussed in the "Characterization of PVDF polymorphic phases" section of this application note.&nbsp;This study outlines how the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=Cary+630+FTIR">Agilent Cary 630 FTIR spectrometer</a> (Figure 1) with its compact footprint can be used at the point of material receipt to verify binder identity. User-friendly Agilent MicroLab software ensures successful operation following minimal operator training. Analyses carried out using the Cary 630 FTIR support fast decision‑making, help avoid production disruptions, and improve end-product reliability.<h4>Results and discussion&nbsp;</h4>The binder samples were analyzed by placing a small quantity of solid material directly onto the ATR crystal of the Cary 630 FTIR spectrometer. Gentle pressure was applied to ensure good contact. After the measurement was completed, the ATR crystal was cleaned with a light solvent and wipe in preparation for the next sample.&nbsp;The MicroLab software uses a built-in Similarity algorithm that automatically calculates a Hit Quality Index (HQI). The HQI value indicates how closely the acquired sample spectrum matches a reference spectrum from the user‑generated library. HQI values are commonly used as pass/fail criteria in material identification and confirmation&nbsp;workflows.&nbsp;Using the Similarity algorithm, all four unknown samples (samples 1 to 4) were correctly identified according to the binder type stated on the respective container labels. However, variations in HQI values were observed among the PVDF samples (1 to 3). As shown in Table 2, PVDF-210 and PVDF-5130 exhibited HQI values of 0.96271 and 0.96713, respectively, indicating strong spectral matches. PVDF-6020 showed a slightly lower HQI of 0.90741, which may reflect differences in polymer grade or formulation compared to the reference sample. PTFE-104 (Sample 4) was also correctly identified, with a high HQI of 0.98345, suggesting good spectral agreement and a high-confidence match.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>An Agilent Cary 630 FTIR spectrometer with Agilent MicroLab software provided a simple solution for identifying electrode binder materials—a typical application in lithium-ion battery quality control (QC) workflows.&nbsp;The MicroLab software enabled the rapid creation of a spectral reference library for binder materials based on the analysis of two known "reference" samples. Four "unknown" binders from a different supplier were then correctly identified using the FTIR method. However, one sample yielded a low, red color-coded confidence score, suggesting possible differences in polymer grade or formulation between the reference and unknown samples.&nbsp;The Cary 630 FTIR enables production and QC teams to:&nbsp;<ul><li>Adapt quickly to new materials or suppliers through easy management of the spectral library&nbsp;</li><li>Verify the identity of incoming raw materials using intuitive pictorial guidance and color-coded pass/fail results&nbsp;</li><li>Detect any mislabeling or contamination of materials&nbsp;</li><li>Monitor batch-to-batch variability that could affect electrode performance and battery manufacturing yields&nbsp;</li></ul>With its compact, modular design, the Cary 630 FTIR can be deployed in production environments, including gloveboxes. Its ease-of-use makes it a valuable tool for ensuring material consistency, minimizing process disruptions, and maintaining high standards in lithium-ion battery manufacturing.<h3>2. Shimadzu / AOAC: Speciation Analysis of Mercury in Seafood by LC-ICP-MS</h3><ul><li>Poster</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/aoac_2025_m028_b60b5ecaa6.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>Mercury contamination in seafood poses significant health risks to consumers. Mercury screening using ICPMS alone can provide a total concentration, however some species of mercury are more toxic to humans than others, and a total concentration may not provide adequate information and result in incomplete risk assessments. Generally, methyl mercury is more toxic than inorganic mercury and other organic mercury. Evaluating the toxicity in food requires not only analysis as total mercury but also by the form of mercury. To address this, we propose the use of Liquid Chromatography coupled with Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LCICP-MS) for detailed speciation analysis of mercury by connecting an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=ICPMS-2040%2F2050">ICPMS-2040/2050 </a>with <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=Nexera+XS+inert">Nexera XS inert.</a> Furthermore, we also evaluated the automatic dilution function of the Nexera series autosampler for the speciation analysis of mercury.<h4>Results&nbsp;</h4>Samples were analyzed with the LC-ICP-MS system, which consisted of the ICPMS-2040/2050 connected to a Nexera XS inert (Fig. 1). LabSolutions ICPMS TRM software can control the ICPMS2040/2050 system and Shimadzu LC units, enabling everything from sample injection to chromatogram analysis to be performed via a single software program. The analytical conditions used for analysis were those included in the LC-ICP-MS Method Package for Mercury Speciation Analysis. Table 1 shows the analytical conditions for HPLC, and Table 2 shows the analytical conditions for ICP-MS.<h4>Conclusion</h4>Speciation analysis of methyl mercury and total mercury in seafood was performed using an LC-ICP-MS system that connected an ICPMS-2040/2050 to a Nexera XS inert according to the conditions in the “LC-ICP-MS Method Package for Mercury Speciation Analysis.” Analysis of methyl mercury and total mercury in seafood showed good spike recoveries demonstrating system suitability.<h3>3. Thermo Fisher Scientific: High Sensitivity, Fast Scanning, Sector Field ICP-MS – Improving Sensitivity for Laser Ablation with the Jet Interface</h3><ul><li>Poster</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/po_65415_icp_ms_high_sensitivity_fast_scanning_ewcps2019_po65415_en_22e55fbf12.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul>In laser ablation ICP-MS analysis, the choice of which type of ICP-MS to use may not be entirely obvious. High precision isotope ratio analysis, such as epsilon level precision for geochronology, would need to be measured with a multicollector ICP-MS, such as the Thermo Scientific™ NEPTUNE XT™, but for the majority of applications the precision obtainable with a single collector ICP-MS is sufficient. In the area of single collector ICP-MS we are still left with the choice between a quadrupole-based ICP-MS, such as the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products/1206">Thermo Scientific™ iCAP™ RQ/TQ</a>, and a magnet sector based ICP-MS, the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products/1670">Thermo Scientific™ Element XR™</a>.&nbsp;The reduced cost, size and complexity of the quadrupolebased ICP-MS make them a popular choice for LA-ICP-MS analysis. However, it has always been known that a magnet sector based ICP-MS enjoys a significant increase in sensitivity: detecting more ions for the same amount of atoms introduced. In laser ablation analysis the amount of sample to be analyzed is often strictly limited. Furthermore, to reduce laser-induced fractionation and to stay within discrete sample zones it is highly desirable to ablate as little sample material as possible. The trend towards higher resolution LA-ICP-MS bioimaging has also led to a reduction in the amount of sample ablated. These limitations in sample size make the sensitivity of the ICP-MS vital in order to achieve useable limits of quantification and detection (LOQ and LOD).The Jet Interface option for the Thermo Scientific Element XR HR-ICP-MS greatly increases the sensitivity of fast scanning, sector field ICP-MS, especially for dry plasma. It consists of a high capacity dry interface pump and a companion set of specially designed cones. Here we report the sensitivity (as sample ion yield) of the Element XR when equipped with the Jet Interface option. We then compare this sensitivity to two other ICP-MS for the LA-ICP-MS U-Pb analysis of two common zircon reference materials.&nbsp;<h4>MATERIALS AND METHODS&nbsp;</h4><h5>ICP-MS&nbsp;</h5>Three ICP-MS systems were used:&nbsp;<ul><li>NEPTUNE XT (multi collector ICP-MS, with Jet Interface)&nbsp;</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products/1670">ELEMENT XR</a> (single collector Sector Field ICP-MS), equipped with Jet Interface option&nbsp;</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products/1206">iCAP TQ</a> (single collector quadrupole based ICP-MS), equipped with high sensitivity cones and insert recommended for laser ablation analysis</li></ul><h4>CONCLUSIONS&nbsp;</h4>The Jet Interface for the Element XR SF-ICP-MS gives:&nbsp;<ul><li>Sample Ion Yield &gt;1% for Nd, Hf, Pb and U.&nbsp;</li><li>Over 20 times LA sensitivity compared to Q-ICP-MS</li></ul>

However, the growing concern of heavy metal contamination in chillies presents a significant threat to food safety, public health, and international trade. Effective monitoring and stringent quality control are essential to safeguard consumer well-being and maintain economic stability.This study details a precise ICPMS method with <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=1&amp;search=ICPMS-2050">ICPMS-2050</a> for quantifying toxic elements in chilli powder, developed in strict adherence to Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI)1 regulations. The complex matrix of chilli powder presents significant analytical challenges for the accurate and efficient recovery of trace heavy metal elements. The presence of diverse organic compounds and high oil content can interfere with standard digestion procedures, leading to suboptimal extraction efficiencies and compromised analytical recovery of critical elements such as lead, cadmium and arsenic.<h4>Results&nbsp;</h4>Quantitation results for As, Cd, Hg &amp; Pb in chilli samples found to be BLOQ. Validation parameters like linearity, recovery and precision were studied to establish LOQs. This method successfully achieved LOQ of 0.250 ppm in sample. The summary results and system stability are shown in Table 4, 5, 6, 7 &amp; 8 respectively. As per FSSAI guideline. BLOQ – Below limit of quantitation, LOQ – Limit of quantitation&nbsp;<h5>Linearity&nbsp;</h5>NIST traceable calibration standards were used for linearity study and quantification of spiked samples. Six level calibrations curve was plotted for 0.5, 1.0, 2.5, 5.0, 10 &amp; 20 ppb concentration levels. For all calibration standards accuracy was found within 80 to 120 % range.&nbsp;<h5>Recovery&nbsp;</h5>Recovery was studied at 0.250 ppm spiked samples against calibration curve. Six preparations for each brand of samples were prepared. Mean recoveries were found to be within 80 -120 % at LOQ level (Refer Table 5).<h5>Precision&nbsp;</h5>For precision, repeatability and within-laboratory reproducibility studies were carried out. RSDr : The % RSD for 3 replicates of each sample aspiration at LOQ (0.250 ppm) levels was found to be less than 20 % (Refer Table 6). RSDR : Reproducibility experiment for recoveries was performed on 6 different spiked samples at 0.250 ppm concentration levels. The % RSD of 6 spiked samples at their respective LOQ level was found to be less than 10 % (Refer Table 7).&nbsp;<h4>Conclusion</h4><ul><li>This study demonstrates that the Shimadzu ICPMS system is a reliable and effective instrument for quantifying toxic elements in chilli powder samples.</li><li>Because of the complex nature of chilli powder, higher dilution factor needed to be applied in conjunction with Shimadzu’s Octa-plate Collision Cell technology to minimizes spectral interferences for achieving lower LOQs.</li><li>The Shimadzu ICPMS enables trace-level detection in samples, contributing to enhanced method ruggedness and ensuring consistent, reproducible analyte detection.</li><li>The combination of a highly sensitive instrument and a robust analytical method makes it wellsuited for use in testing laboratories for the analysis of toxic elements in chilli powder.</li></ul><h3>2. That is the alarming conclusion of recent investigations by <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.spiegel.de/wirtschaft/stiftung-warentest-findet-giftige-schwermetalle-in-angeboten-von-temu-und-shein-a-efb2057b-2377-4ce4-b2e0-07be01d00df0">Stiftung Warentest</a>, Germany’s leading consumer protection organization.<h3>A reputation under scrutiny</h3>Low prices, fast fashion, and endless product choices have made online platforms hugely popular across Europe. With just a few clicks, shoppers can order clothes, accessories, toys, and electronics at prices that seem almost too good to be true.In a large-scale product test, consumer advocates found serious safety deficiencies in many popular items sold on these platforms.The advice to consumers is equally clear: buyers should dispose of affected products immediately and think carefully about what they order in the future.<h3>Shockingly high levels of toxic metals</h3>One of the most concerning findings involved fashion jewelry. In the test, the cadmium concentration in two necklaces exceeded the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://de.euronews.com/2025/10/31/stiftung-warentest-giftige-schwermetalle-in-shein-und-temu-produkten">EU’s legal limit by 8,500 times.</a> It´s a cheaper alternative to safer metals like silver, zinc alloys, or stainless steel, is easy to work with, and looks good at first glance.However, cadmium is classified as carcinogenic and can cause serious kidney and bone damage. Because of its toxicity, it is subject to <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.bvl.bund.de/SharedDocs/Pressemitteilungen/03_verbraucherprodukte/2020/2020_02_11_PI_Modeschmuck.html">strict limits</a> in the EU. Products that exceed these limits are considered unsafe and illegal to sell.Experts strongly warn against simply throwing such items into the household trash. Jewelry contaminated with cadmium or other heavy metals should be taken to a hazardous waste collection point.The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.euroconsumers.org/systemic-failures-in-product-compliance-on-temu-and-shein/">investigation</a> covered 162 products in total of which 54 were necklaces.The products were purchased online and tested in cooperation with consumer organizations from Denmark and Belgium.The results were sobering:<ul><li>110 of the 162 products failed to meet EU safety standards</li><li>Around 25% were rated “potentially dangerous”</li></ul><h3>A broader EU problem</h3>EU authorities regularly find toxic heavy metals such as <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33757252/">cadmium</a>, lead, and nickel in cheap imported jewelry. These substances can trigger severe allergies, damage organs like the liver and kidneys, and increase cancer risk.Although the EU’s rapid alert system (RAPEX) removes thousands of unsafe products from the market every year, experts warn that the number of untested items is far higher than what authorities can realistically monitor.In some laboratory tests, individual jewelry items were found to consist of up to 70% cadmium, making them legally “not marketable” in Germany and the EU.The takeaway for shoppers should be clear:<ul><li>Extremely low prices can come with hidden health and safety risks</li><li>Jewelry, children’s products, and electronics deserve extra caution</li><li>When in doubt, it’s safer to buy from sellers that clearly comply with EU regulations</li></ul><h3>How can we detect Cadmium in necklaces?</h3>Consumer product/jewelry guidance explicitly notes that cadmium in jewelry extracts can be measured by ICP-OES or ICP-MS after an extraction step.Cadmium in jewelry is often regulated at low levels (either as total content after digestion or as extractable/migratable Cd in simulated-use leaches). <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products?category=232&amp;instrumentationItems=83&amp;manufacturerItems=3">ICP-MS</a> is routinely chosen because it can quantify Cd at trace / ultra-trace levels with strong precision and accuracy.Using a Thermo Scientific iCAP MX Series ICP-MS for Cadmium (Cd) determination in necklaces/ jewellery makes sense because jewelry testing typically needs very low detection limits, high confidence in complex matrices, and defensible compliance data.<ul><li>Better interference control for Cd isotopes</li></ul>Cadmium has a range of isotopes available for analysis, but interferences need to be considered. Most isotopes are isobarically interfered by Tin (meaning that a given m/z range would be responding to both elements), the isotope typically monitored (111Cd) may be interfered by molybdenum (95Mo16O+). Since both elements can be found as well in jewelry, removing these interferences is critical to avoid false positives. The iCAP MX Series ICP-MS come with the powerful QCell collision/reaction cell to overcome interferences. Whether you are operating an ICP-OES or ICP-MS system, the way you use your software can significantly influence productivity and analytical performance. Below is a structured recap of the key insights shared during Part 1.<h3>Understanding the structure of Qtegra</h3>One of the most valuable features of Qtegra software is its consistency across multiple instrument platforms. Whether you are working with the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products?category=227&amp;instrumentationItems=84&amp;manufacturerItems=3&amp;search=icap+pro">iCAP PRO ICP-OES</a>, the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products?category=232&amp;instrumentationItems=83&amp;manufacturerItems=3">iCAP MX ICP-MS</a>, the iCAP 7000 OES, or Qnova ICP-MS systems, the interface and workflow logic remain familiar. This consistency reduces the learning curve when transitioning between instruments and supports standardised training across laboratories.Qtegra consists of two primary components: the Qtegra application itself and the Configurator.<ul><li>The Qtegra application is where you directly interact with your instrument. It is used to create LabBooks, control the instrument, execute analyses, and review results.</li><li>The Configurator, in contrast, defines how your system behaves at a deeper level. It controls system-level settings that underpin daily operation. Within the Configurator, users can manage features such as Fast Uptake setup, drain sensor configuration, wavelength libraries for ICP-OES systems, the Reaction Database for ICP-MS systems, and user access permissions.</li></ul>Understanding the distinction between these two components helps users troubleshoot more effectively and ensures that system configuration aligns with laboratory requirements.<h3>Using the dashboard as your central hub</h3>When Qtegra is opened, the first screen presented is the Dashboard. The Dashboard functions as the central hub for instrument monitoring and control. From this location, users can view instrument status, monitor live operating parameters, access tuning tools, review performance checks, and identify error or interlock notifications.<ul><li>For ICP-OES users, the Dashboard provides access to tune sets, source settings, AutoPeak alignment, autotuning functions, and live views such as Plasma TV. These tools allow users to confirm that the plasma and optical system are performing as expected before analysis begins.</li><li>For ICP-MS users, the Instrument tab within the Dashboard provides access to autotune routines, performance report summaries, gas flow settings, nebuliser adjustments, operating mode selection such as Standard, KED, or CCT modes, IntelliLens control, and real-time data streams.</li></ul>The Dashboard should be used as a structured checkpoint before running any analysis. Confirming that all parameters are within acceptable ranges reduces the likelihood of interruptions and supports consistent performance throughout the run.<h3>The get ready workflow: structured instrument preparation</h3><ul><li>The Get Ready function, which is launched directly from the Dashboard, provides a guided preparation workflow. This feature is designed to ensure that the instrument is fully configured and operating correctly for the selected method before analysis begins.</li><li>Within Get Ready, users can access scheduling tools that automate warmups, standby routines, shutdowns, and maintenance checks. These tools are particularly beneficial for laboratories operating multiple shifts or managing variable workloads.</li></ul>For ICP-MS systems, the Get Ready workflow includes automated performance checks, autotune routines, and controlled warm-up conditions. These routines verify that the instrument is operating within its expected performance range.By following the structured steps within Get Ready, laboratories can reduce the risk of missed preparation tasks and maintain day-to-day analytical consistency.<h3>Building smarter LabBooks</h3>The LabBook forms the foundation of every analytical sequence in Qtegra. A carefully constructed LabBook improves efficiency, reduces setup errors, and simplifies data review.Users can create a LabBook from scratch or begin with a template. Templates are particularly useful for laboratories that integrate with LIMS systems or import sample lists via CSV files, as they promote standardisation and consistency.<h4>Defining analytes</h4><ul><li>For ICP-OES methods, users must select appropriate wavelengths and evaluate potential spectral interferences.&nbsp;</li><li>For ICP-MS methods, users select the required masses, consider isobaric and polyatomic interferences, and use the Reaction Database to support reaction mode selection.</li></ul>Careful analyte selection at this stage helps prevent complications later in the analytical workflow.<h4>Configuring acquisition parameters</h4>Acquisition parameters define how the instrument collects data.<ul><li>For ICP-OES systems, this includes selecting viewing modes, choosing wavelength ranges such as iFR or eUV, and defining integration times.</li><li>For ICP-MS systems, this includes selecting operating modes such as Standard, KED, or CCT, configuring Reaction Finder options, enabling Intelligent Matrix Handling, and defining digital trigger settings.</li></ul>Thoughtful parameter configuration ensures that data quality objectives are met without unnecessary reanalysis.<h4>Using intelligent uptake and rinse</h4>The Intelligent Uptake and Rinse feature detects when the sample or rinse solution reaches the nebuliser. This ensures consistent timing across samples and improves overall throughput. In high-throughput environments, this feature contributes to both efficiency and reproducibility.<h4>Calibration and quantification strategy</h4>Calibration design is central to reliable quantification. Qtegra allows users to manage global standards, configure dilution tools, select calibration fit types, assign internal standards, and establish quality control samples.For ICP-OES systems, users can define standard ranges and switch points. For SemiQuant workflows, Relative Sensitivity Factors can be applied.Establishing these parameters during LabBook creation ensures that data validation is straightforward once analysis is complete.<h4>Autosampler and sample list setup</h4>For laboratories using the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/products/1715">iSC-65 autosampler</a>, features such as StepAhead, custom rack definitions, colour-coded sample views, and visual integrity checks support efficient sequence management.When constructing the sample list, users should clearly define sample types, establish a logical sequence order, and configure column layouts appropriately. Setting flags and limits during initial setup simplifies the data review process and supports quality assurance.<h3>Why workflow optimisation matters</h3>Optimising Qtegra usage does not require learning new software features. Instead, it involves using existing tools more strategically. By treating the Dashboard as a pre-run checkpoint, using Get Ready consistently, and constructing LabBooks with long-term efficiency in mind, laboratories can reduce downtime, improve reproducibility, and strengthen confidence in analytical results.<h3>Looking ahead to part 2</h3><blockquote>In Part 2 of the Qtegra Tips &amp; Tricks series, we will focus on post-analysis best practices.
