ICP-MS systems with integrated CRCs range from single quadrupole (SQ) ICP-MS used in environmental and food analysis, to triple quadrupole ICP-MS (ICP-QQQ) for advanced research applications. For routine applications, Helium Kinetic Energy Discrimination (He KED) mode, commonly referred to as helium mode (He mode), is the most widely used CRC operational mode. The widespread use of He mode is due to its universal effectiveness in reducing a broad range of polyatomic interferences without the need for element-specific optimization.&nbsp;Unlike CRCs that rely on reactive cell gases and require complex tuning (often referred to as reaction cells), He mode effectively mitigates many commonly occurring polyatomic ion interferences without the need for intricate adjustments. In contrast, reaction cells often require careful selection of gas type (such as ammonia or oxygen) and tuning parameters based on the specific interfering ions on analytes of interest.&nbsp;Building on the simplicity of He mode, Agilent has developed Advanced Helium Mode (AHM) for the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/library?mainauthorItems=10&amp;search=9500">Agilent 9500 Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS (ICP-QQQ)</a>. AHM represents a breakthrough in interference removal technology, enabled by the newly designed Agilent Dual-Cell System (DCS) and high-speed cell voltage control. These innovations deliver high sensitivity across the mass range and superior interference removal performance for routine applications. Compared to conventional He mode, AHM demonstrates the following improvements:<ul><li>Around a 20-fold sensitivity improvement for low-mass elements, such as beryllium (Be) and boron (B)&nbsp;</li><li>Around a 2-fold improvement for mid-to-high mass elements&nbsp;</li><li>A reduction of more than 33% in data acquisition time while maintaining detection limits (DLs), accelerating analytical measurement times&nbsp;</li></ul>AHM not only replaces traditional He KED but also consolidates multiple tuning modes including no gas, He, and HEHe into a single, streamlined mode. Integrated into the 9500 ICP-QQQ, AHM is a next-generation standard He mode that is faster, simpler, and delivers higher performance than its predecessor. This technical note describes the performance enhancement mechanisms of the DCS and AHM. It also includes some comparative results with conventional He KED mode to highlight the analytical improvements of AHM.<h4>Overview and advantages of AHM&nbsp;</h4>Typically, multi-element ICP-MS methods apply no gas mode to the determination of low-mass elements like Be and B due to low sensitivity in traditional He KED mode. Consequently, many routine ICP-MS applications have required multiple tune setups, combining no gas, He, and HEHe. Each mode switch introduces a delay due to cell pressure stabilization requirements.&nbsp;In practice, low-mass elements (m/z &lt; 23) are generally unaffected by polyatomic ion interferences, so KED is often unnecessary. Therefore, in AHM, different voltages are applied to the DCS (effectively disabling KED) for low-mass elements, while keeping standard settings for elements with m/z ≥ 23.&nbsp;The DCS voltages are dynamically switched in sync with Q2 using a high-speed voltage control circuit, providing over 20× sensitivity improvement for low-mass elements compared to conventional He mode. AHM eliminates the need to run in no gas mode, greatly simplifying the method. As a default approach, AHM alone is suitable for most applications.1<h3>2. Shimadzu: Damping Force Characteristic Test of Suspension Struts [JASO C611]</h3><ul><li>Application note</li><li><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_01_01017_en_2fbbb9c247.pdf">Full PDF for download</a></li></ul><h5>User Benefits</h5><ul><li>Damping force characteristic tests on suspension struts can be performed based on the JASO C611 standard.&nbsp;</li><li>Combination test enables automatic speed change and measurement.&nbsp;</li><li>High responsiveness of the EMT series enables testing at high excitation speed.</li></ul>Various components play an important role in achieving a comfortable ride in vehicles. Among them, the suspension strut used in the suspension system is an important component that stabilizes the vehicle body by mitigating the impact caused by uneven road surfaces.&nbsp;“JASO C611 Suspension Struts for Automobiles”1), a standard of JASO (Japanese Automotive Standards Organization), established by JSAE, specifies the definition, quality, and test method for suspension struts. There is no international standard that is equivalent to JASO C611.&nbsp;In order to improve the performance of suspension struts, it is necessary to measure the damping force against speed by changing the excitation speed. The performance of suspension struts can be confirmed by measuring the response, such as the relationship between speed and damping force and the Lissajous waveform.&nbsp;This article introduces an example of the test method “Damping Force Characteristic Test” specified in JASO C611, which was conducted on a Shimadzu EMT series electromagnetic fatigue testing machine.<h4>Testing Equipment&nbsp;</h4>The EMT-1kNV-50 electromagnetic dynamic and fatigue testing machine was used in this test. Fig. 1 shows a photograph of the testing machine. The electromagnetic actuator with extremely high frequency response enables highly accurate dynamic testing. In this test, the maximum test speed was 0.6 m/s. The EMT seriesis most suitable for testing at such high frequencies.<h4>Conclusion&nbsp;</h4>A damping force characteristic test on a suspension strut based on JASO C611 was conducted using an EMT series electromagnetic fatigue testing machine and Windows software for 4830. The test conditions were set using the excitation speed, and it was confirmed that the test was accurately controlled as set. The standard “JASO C611 Suspension Struts for Automobiles” referred to this time is derived from “JASO C602 Automotive Parts - Telescopic Shock Absorbers for Suspension Systems”2). Although C602 also prescribes a damping force characteristic test, it is almost equivalent to the C611, and the test machine configuration can be used by replacing the jig.<h3>3. How to digitize lab operations from start to finish, which is especially relevant in a world where working remotely is becoming increasingly common.

How to Achieve a Fully Digital, End-to-End Workflow

This month-long, five-parts Energy and Chemical application workshop will showcase all Agilent atomic spectroscopy techniques, including ICP-OES and ICP-MS, and MPAES.
Week 1: We will start this series with our experts discussing sample preparation and sample introduction.
Week 2: We first give an overview of all the ASTM methods our atomic spectroscopy applications support, followed by breakout sessions with our experts of each technique for more detailed discussions. Bring your questions and comments to this small group, technique specific discussions.
Week 3: We will focus on applications (besides the ASTM methods discussed last week), both common and unique. We will continue to have breakout sessions for each technique with smaller group size and more detailed discussion for these applications. We look forward to all your comments and questions.
Week 4: We will have a live demo in one of our Center of Excellence (COE) to show you the features in both software and hardware of our ICP-OES and MPAES. We will have real world samples for the analysis and showcase the exceptional results our systems can provide.
Week 5: The workshop&#39;s final week, we will continue the live demo with features in software and hardware of our ICPMS systems, both single quadrupole, and triple quadrupole. We will show the robustness of the systems for all sample types while maintaining ultralow level analyte determination. We will also highlight the ability of the triple quadrupole system to remove interference for certain difficult analytes. Currently, Jenny is an Application Scientist for the Life Science and Chemical Analysis team at Agilent Technologies, joining in 2012 (with a step away in 2019). Jenny is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Viticulture and Enology at the University of California, Davis, since 2013. Jenny has been very active with AOAC and ASTM over the past eight years, serving on expert review panels, chairing committees, and volunteering to develop new methods needed by the industry. Jenny has extensive experience in operating and method development for Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectroscopy (ICP-MS), Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES), Microwave Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (MP-AES). Jenny has broad knowledge and experience in different speciation analysis for many sample matrices using GC-ICPMS and LC-ICPMS. As well as vast experience with sp-ICP-MS for many applications.

In ICP-OES method development, wavelength selection based on sensitivity, freedom from spectral interferences, and linearity is the foundation upon which quality data is built.
Taking the time to investigate multiple wavelengths for a given element will yield the most accurate analytical results. During this webinar, several important features and tools for method development will be shown in the ICP Expert software, including a feature called IntelliQuant. IntelliQuant is an included feature of the ICP Expert software, and is a semi-quantitative analysis based on a supplied calibration. This feature, along with others which will be shown, makes method development with the Agilent ICP-OES simple and easy.

Tina R. Harville has spent her career working in atomic spectrometry. She graduated from Clemson University with a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry where her research focused on Radio-Frequency Glow Discharge Atomic Emission Spectrometry (RF-GD-AES). After graduate school, she began her career as an ICP-OES development chemist at Alfred H. Knight Laboratories in South Carolina. Then she went to NJ where she worked both as an ICP-OES and RF-GD-AES applications chemist for JY/HORIBA. She later came back to the south to work at Varian, Inc. in Cary, NC as a Dissolution Product Specialist and then quickly joined the atomic team as an applications chemist. For seven years, she was an applications engineer for Agilent, supporting both Flame and Furnace AA, MP-AES and ICP-OES. Two years ago, she joined the Technical Support Team at Agilent, where she is currently an Online Applications Advisor.

The food and beverage industries have been threatened by fraudulent activities, including counterfeiting, substitution, adulteration, and mislabeling.
Most of this fraud is committed to gain an economic advantage. Elemental profiling using ICP-MS has been proposed as an approach for geographic authentication of various foods and beverages. Using these approaches, we have demonstrated that the elemental profiles of a variety of foods across a range of geographic scales, i.e., across different countries and different regions within a country or state, can be differentiated. This workshop will explain how to use elemental profiles obtained using an ICP-MS coupled with statically software Mass Profiler Professional (MPP) to determine if the variance between samples is adequate to distinguish growing origin.
