<p> The Academy employs over 8,000 employees, more than a half of whom are researchers with university degrees.</p>
<p>The primary mission of the CAS and its institutes is to conduct research in a broad spectrum of the natural, technical and social sciences and the humanities. This research, whether highly specialised or interdisciplinary in nature, aims to advance developments in scientific knowledge at the international level, while also taking into account the specific needs of both the Czech society and the national culture. Researchers of the Academy institutes also participate in education, particularly through doctoral study programmes for young researchers and by teaching at universities as well. The Academy also fosters collaboration with applied research and industry. The integration of the Czech science into the international context is being promoted by means of numerous joint international research projects and through the exchange of scientists with counterpart institutions abroad. The CAS is financed primarily from the state budget. </p>
<p>The CAS has also been assigned financial responsibility for 71 specialised Czech scientific societies associated with the Council of Scientific Societies.</p>

<p>Chemical research continues in the tradition of such distinguished Czech chemists as Rudolf Brdička, Jaroslav Heyrovský, František Šorm, and Otto Wichterle. In physical chemistry, theoretical as well as experimental, research is oriented toward the selected fields of chemical physics, electrochemistry, and catalysis. Inorganic chemistry is directed at the preparation and characterisation of new compounds and materials, such as boranes. Research in organic chemistry and biochemistry focuses on medicine, biology, and ecology, seeking to synthesise new potential medicaments, especially anti-virals. Macromolecular chemistry involves developing, preparing, and characterising new polymers for use in biomedicine, such as those for contact lenses and the separation of compounds. Analytical chemistry is also directed at separation techniques, but on a microscale in capillaries and in spectral methods. Thermodynamics and phase behaviour of fluids, dynamics of multiple phase reacting systems, homo- and heterogeneous catalysis, and modern separation methods are studied in the domain of chemical engineering science.</p>

<p>The aim of research in this section is to increase knowledge about processes in living organisms, from the molecular and cellular levels to the whole organism. Biophysical research is oriented toward studies of DNA – protein interaction and the effect of environmental factors on organisms. In molecular genetics and cell biology, signalling pathways which trigger target reactions and the responses of the target genes to these signals are investigated; special attention is paid to cell mechanisms of immune responses. Studies of microbial genomes and processes lead to modern technologies for preparing metabolites with defined biological effects. Research in mammalian and human physiology and pathophysiology is centered on cardiovascular physiology, neurosciences, physiology of reproduction, and embryology, aimed at creating theoretical bases of preventive medicine. In entomology, insects are studied both as common pests, but also as model objects, as in the case of the silk moth. Research in experimental botany is oriented toward genetics, physiology, and pathophysiology, as well as modern plant biotechnologies.</p>

<p>Research in this section is concentrated on interactions between organisms and environment, and also between organisms. Studies involve earth ecosystems, water ecosystems, and parasite-host systems. Investigations are carried out mostly on the territory of the Czech Republic, and contribute to the bio-ecological mapping of the country. Long-term observations focus on typical ecosystems in selected localities studied from the point of view of geobotany, hydrobiology, soil biology, chemistry and microbiology, and on the eutrophization of selected lakes and dams. Taxonomy of higher and lower plants, especially of algae, is investigated and the information is used by conservationists. The Institute of Botany oversees the care of Průhonice Park, an important part of Czech natural and cultural heritage.</p>

The Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS) was established by Act No. 283/1992 Coll. as the Czech successor of the former Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. It is set up as a complex of 54 public research institutions.

<h3><strong>History</strong></h3>
<p>UCT Prague was founded in 1952 but its origins date back to 1807 when the first course in chemistry was delivered at Prague Polytechnic. Reorganization of the polytechnic in 1920 resulted in the transformation of the chemistry department into the School of Chemical Technology, one of the seven sections of the Czech Technical University.</p>
<p>A number of key figures of the history of chemistry relate to UCT Prague. Among them, three figures are renowned in their fields: Vladimir Prelog, Nobel Prize winner, Otto Wichterle, inventor of contact lenses, and Emil Votoček, author of the Czech chemical nomenclature.</p>
<p>Several presidents of the Czech Academy of Sciences – František Šorm, Rudolf Zahradník, and Jiří Drahoš – are connected with the school as well.</p>
<p>UCT Prague was the first Czech university authorised to provide the Eurobachelor degree. As its name indicates, this prestigious recognition certifies the quality of UCT Prague bachelor studies at the European level.</p>

RECETOX - Research Centre for Toxic Compounds in the Environment

<h3><strong>About RECETOX</strong></h3>
<p>Founded in 1983,  RECETOX is an independent department of Masaryk University’s Faculty of Science. We are engaged in research and education in the fields of environmental and health. Our main activities comprise of monitoring toxic compounds in the environment, various products and human tissues, and evaluating the risks they pose, as well as their associated toxicological and ecotoxicological health effects; developing new sampling and analytical methods; developing new chemical tools and methodologies, biotechnologies and software tools. We are equipt to rapidly respond to new challenges concerning environmental contamination monitoring and exposure of the population to toxic compounds and their mixtures, and propose preventive and legislative measures, and offer appropriate interventions for chemicals management. </p>
<p>We work closely with various industrial partners to safeguard human health and ecosystems from the effects of toxic compounds,. Furthermore, through hosting of the National Center for Toxic Compounds, and the Stockholm Convention Regional Center (SCRC) for capacity building and transfer of technology, we support countries in Europe and Africa, as well as international institutions in the region. </p>
<p>RECETOX’s Research Infrastructure, is a centralized facility for the implementation of interdisciplinary research projects, and is divided into individual core facilities that analyze a wide range of anthropogenic natural substances and toxins in environmental or biological matrices, conduct long-term environmental and population studies, and develop sophisticated software tools for management, analysis, interpretation, and visualization of data. </p>

<h3><strong>Science and Research</strong></h3>
<p>We study the relationships between chemicals, the environment, biological systems, and human health, and monitor their impacts at local, regional, and global levels. </p>
<p>Research is carried out by 19 research groups in five research programs.</p>
<h5><strong>Research Agenda</strong></h5>
<p>RECETOX studies the behavior of contaminants and models their long-distance transport and bioaccumulation in living organisms; this includes evaluating the effects of toxic substances on the environment and health, and developing methods and tools to break them down.</p>
<h5><strong>Interdisciplinary Approach</strong></h5>
<p>Our extensive expertise enables us to explore the complex relationships between contaminated ecosystems and population health, biodiversity, and climate change, assess their local and regional impacts, and develop water and soil remediation technologies and tools.</p>
<h5><strong>Environment and Health</strong></h5>
<p>In recent years, the Center&#39;s research focus has expanded to cover the various factors affecting human health and well-being, the so-called exposome, chemical safety, and the development of biotechnology, materials, and bioinformatics tools for biomedicine.</p>
<h4><strong>Our motivation</strong></h4>
<p>Due to the growing number of older adults and the resulting increase in the burden of chronic diseases and societal demands, most developed countries face long-term rises in healthcare costs and thus pressure on health insurance systems. This increase makes chronic diseases, together with health inequalities, two of the most challenging problems of the 21st century. To effectively address these problems, the factors that determine the health of humans and entire populations must be clarified and explored. </p>
<p>Individuals and populations are exposed to many environmental factors, such as heat, noise, light pollution, and a wide range of chemicals and their mixtures. These chemicals enter the body via the food and water we ingest, products we use daily (e.g., cosmetics), the air we breathe, and the indoor environments (buildings, offices) we work or live in. While many of these chemicals have been shown to interfere with the proper functioning of the endocrine and immune systems, causing neurodevelopmental, metabolic, and reproductive disorders, the combined effects of toxic mixtures and other environmental factors, which can also be influenced by stress, socioeconomic determinants, lifestyle or dietary habits, have not yet been fully elucidated.</p>
<p>Therefore, we aim to build research capacity for investigating the exposure of populations to the environmental factors (so-called Exposome) mentioned above, estimate internal exposure and individual susceptibility, predict the risks to human health, and thereby contribute to clarifying the etiology of chronic conditions. </p>

<h5><strong>Environmental chemistry and modelling</strong></h5>

<li>The research programme focuses on understanding the mechanisms and processes affecting the emissions and fate of chemicals in the environment and further expands its interest in study of the exposure of individuals and populations to the environment in order to provide tools for common interpretation of data from environmental monitoring and human biomonitoring networks.</li>

<h5><strong>Environmental health</strong></h5>
<ul>
<li>The new research program deals with biomarkers of exposure, effect and sensitivity of individual organisms, and other factors such as socio-economic determinants of health, nutrition or physical activity. In this context, we are strengthening technology capabilities for omics analyses, biobanking capacities and developing a bioinformatics platform to support the interpretation of multi-omics and epidemiological data.</li>
</ul>
<h5><strong>Environmental Toxicology</strong></h5>
<ul>
<li>Programme focuses on the environmental impacts of both acute and chronic chemical exposures. We use the Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP) combining modeling and testing strategies to predict the environmental impacts of complex chemical mixtures. We investigate combined exposures to various factors that, based on individual susceptibility, can significantly contribute to an individual&#39;s excessive burden and lead to the development of pathologies.</li>
</ul>
<h5><strong>Chemical Tools for Diagnostics and Therapy</strong></h5>
<ul>
<li>The programme focuses on the development of new photoactivatable systems and supramolecular carriers as specific systems that exhibit specific biological activities or serve as auxiliary systems for biological or medical applications.</li>
</ul>
<h5><strong>Loschmidt laboratories of Protein Engineering</strong></h5>
<ul>
<li>The research programme has been dealing with the basic principles of enzymatic catalysis and development of protein and cellular biocatalysts for environmental, chemical and biomedical applications. The program uses protein engineering, synthetic biology and analysis of large data stored in genomic databases to develop and prepare useful catalysts.</li>

<h3><strong>Our Story</strong></h3>
<p>SETAC was founded in the late 1970s to be a forum for interdisciplinary communication among environmental scientists – biologists, chemists, toxicologists – as well as managers and engineers and others interested in environmental issues. SETAC was incorporated in Washington, DC, USA, in 1979 and soon grew to be a global entity.</p>
<p>SETAC is concerned about global environmental issues and is committed to <a href="https://www.setac.org/?page=Mission"><strong>Environmental Quality Through Science®</strong></a>. SETAC takes a multidisciplinary, multistakeholder and science-based approach to identifying solutions for environmental challenges. Because of its approach, SETAC’s development and the growth of the environmental movement are closely associated.</p>
<p>SETAC’s growth from SETAC North America has been marked by the establishment of Geographic Units around the world: SETAC Europe in 1989, SETAC Asia-Pacific in 1997, SETAC Latin America in 1999 and SETAC Africa in 2012, as well as regional chapters and branches at the more local level. </p>
<p>A unique strength of SETAC is its commitment to balance the scientific interests of government, academia and business. The society&#39;s <a href="https://www.setac.org/?page=Mission"><strong>by-laws</strong></a> mandate equal representation from these three sectors for officers, World Council, Geographic Unit boards of directors and councils, and committee members and governance of activities. This individual will be responsible for following all safety and quality guidelines while maintaining a satisfactory production level.&nbsp; The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.</p><h4><strong>About you:</strong></h4><ul><li>Ensure that all tasks are performed within time restraints and according to relevant quality and safety policies and procedures.</li><li>Use results from test method(s) in calculations to further characterize the data (i.e. Calculated Cetane Index, Viscosity Index, etc.).</li><li>Prepare and/or aliquot samples as part of a sample preparation step for all required tests. When applicable load samples on automated instrumentation that has been validated following method quality requirements.</li><li>Perform routine daily and/or weekly verification(s) and/or calibration(s) on equipment and instrumentation following method quality requirements. Some methods will require a minimum Level 3 or 4 based on complexity and quality risk level.</li><li>Perform analysis on samples through direct testing (i.e. wet chemistry). The minimum level required to perform some methods will vary depending on complexity of the method, safety risk level, and quality risk level.</li><li>Perform preventative maintenance on equipment and/or instrumentation as required by the method. The minimum level required to perform preventative maintenance on some equipment and/or instrumentation will vary depending on the complexity of the task, safety risk level and quality risk level.</li><li>Perform calculations as required when conducting analytical preparations.</li><li>Perform sample preparation for multiple testing requirements.</li><li>Perform housekeeping duties as required. This includes assisting with storage and disposal of client samples.</li><li>Monitor inventory levels for supplies and reagents required for test methods.</li><li>Prepare and maintain standards and reagents.
