Agilent Technologies: </strong><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/wp_workstation_plus_compliance_icp_ms_5994_7766en_agilent_a5623c43a6.pdf"><strong>Support for 21 CFR Part 11 and Annex 11 Compliance: ICP-MS MassHunter Workstation Plus Software</strong></a></h4><ul><li>Technical note</li></ul><h5><strong>Overview</strong></h5><p>OpenLab Server and ECM XT are ideal compliance solutions for medium to large-sized and expanding laboratories with multiple ICP-MS instruments, while OpenLab ECM is suitable for large laboratories wishing to manage electronic records from multiple instruments and sites. However, the cost and complexity of these server-based compliance solutions may not be appropriate for smaller laboratories that require a simple set of compliance tools to manage records from a single ICP-MS instrument.</p><p>For these smaller laboratories, the Agilent ICP-MS MassHunter Workstation Plus software provides a lower-cost route to complying with 21 CFR Part 11 and Annex 11. Workstation Plus is installed on the ICP-MS instrument PC to provide a simple and cost-effective compliance solution for a single Agilent ICP-MS or ICP-QQQ instrument.</p><p>In common with OpenLab Server, ECM XT, and ECM integration, the ICP-MS MassHunter User Access Control option uses OpenLab Shared Services (OLSS) functions to control user access to the workstation and record application and workstation audit trails.</p><p><strong>Compliance components</strong></p><p>Compliance with regulations is a key aspect of an analytical laboratory’s operation in many industries, such as pharmaceutical manufacturing, where the principles of good manufacturing practice (GMP) apply.</p><p>The four components of compliance related to analytical instruments are:</p><ul><li>Design qualification (DQ), manufacturing quality control, lifecycle management and documentation, and installation and operational qualification (IQ/OQ), for analytical instruments and their software.</li><li>Control of user access to the workstation for instrument control and data processing (restricted user login access with password protection).</li><li>Electronic records security, integrity and traceability (secure storage, file versioning, audit trail, electronic signatures, and archive/retrieval).</li><li>Control of system operation, performance verification (PQ), physical access to the laboratory and associated equipment, Standard Operating Procedures, training and records.</li></ul><h4><strong>2. Thermo Fisher Scientific: </strong><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_002971_tea_icp_ms_whisky_an002971_em_en_8257443b85.pdf"><strong>Profiling the elemental composition of whisky using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS)</strong></a></h4><ul><li>Application</li></ul><p><strong>Goal</strong></p><p>This application note will highlight how whisky samples can be comprehensively analyzed for their elemental composition and how this can help to unravel differences according to their geological origin as well as in the processing.</p><p><strong>Introduction</strong></p><p>The fermentation of foods and grains has a long history in human civilizations. Fermentation (and subsequent production of alcoholic beverages) has helped to make foods and drinks more durable, for example as an alternative to quickly degrading drinking water supplies on sea travel.</p><p>Whisky refers to a liquor made from fermented grain mash, often barley, corn, rye, and wheat. The main whisky producing countries are Scotland, Ireland, and the US, and controls over geographic origin are in place to maintain overall brand integrity.</p><p>Due to the large profit range especially for aged and rare whisky from specific manufacturers or regions, adulteration or incorrect labeling causes issues. There are a series of marker compounds that can be analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to identify whisky adulteration,<sup>1</sup> but the elemental composition can also provide relevant insights. There are certain elements that are known to vary in soils and may be used as indicators for geographical origin or to characterize relevant and unique steps in manufacturing. However, due to the distillation process, they may be depleted significantly in the final spirit compared to the original grain. This means highly sensitive instrumentation is needed to detect potentially small differences in concentrations.</p><p>Due to the alcohol content of around 40%, direct analysis using ICP-MS is often not possible. However, a reduction of the alcohol content by dilution makes the analysis possible without major changes to the sample introduction system (i.e., addition of oxygen to the plasma). Spectral and physical interferences however need to be considered. First, the remaining alcohol content changes the viscosity of the sample solutions and will therefore affect flow rates and nebulization efficiency in the sample introduction system. This can be addressed by preparation of matrix-matched calibration standards. Another reason to use matrix-matched calibration standards is the fact that analytes like arsenic and selenium are prone to signal enhancement in the presence of carbon and may therefore lead to false positive results if this is not compensated for. Last but not least, carbon can contribute to the formation of polyatomic interferences, such as <sup>40</sup>Ar<sup>12</sup>C<sup>+</sup> on <sup>52</sup>Cr.</p><p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p><p>This study demonstrates that whisky, as well as other alcoholic beverages, can be analyzed for its complete trace elemental profile using the iCAP MSX ICP-MS following a simple dilution. The high robustness of the plasma as well as the re-designed sample introduction system allows solutions containing approximately 10 vol% of EtOH to be aspirated. Only minor changes to the sample introduction configuration were made to maximize sensitivity and account for the expected lower nebulizer flow rate. The data specifically demonstrates the high sensitivity of the instrument and its ability to remove polyatomic interferences. This in turn can be used to detect a wide range of elements that may show variability in whisky (and potentially other spirits derived from fermented agricultural products) based on geological conditions and/or processing materials or equipment used.</p><h4><strong>3. Shimadzu: </strong><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_05_sca_125_032_en_0c9bac6f93.pdf"><strong>Analysis of Black Mass Using ICPE-9800 for Enhancing Accuracy of EDX-7200 Results</strong></a></h4><ul><li>Application</li></ul><h5><strong>User Benefits</strong></h5><ul><li>CPE-9800 Series allows in-depth analysis of black mass samples for calibration of EDX-7200 and investigation of out-of-the-ordinary samples identified in process-control.</li><li>EDX-7200 Series represents a very fast tool for on-site process control with little sample preparation.</li><li>Both instruments complement another and provide any user with a full set of capabilities for their endeavors.</li></ul><h5><strong>Introduction</strong></h5><p>In the recycling process of lithium-ion batteries (LIB) black mass is an intermediate product from which, through various processes, precious metals like nickel, manganese and cobalt may be extracted. Any company trying to economically recover these valuable components requires information on the<br>elemental composition of the black mass to be used as the input material to their processes. At the same time, the producers of black mass strive to control their mechanical stage of the recycling process to assure a constant quality of their product. Both parties require instrumentation allowing fast and accurate elemental analysis for quality control.</p><p><strong>Strengths and weaknesses of ED-XRF and ICP-OES</strong></p><p>A great strength of EDX-7200 is the capability to directly analyze solid samples with little sample preparation. However, it may be difficult to spot interferences and gauge the accuracy of the obtained result. Sample preparation for analysis using ICPE-9820 can be time-consuming and complex, but the obtainable results may be more easily evaluated to spot possible biases due to matrix effects. Preparing calibration standards based on certified reference materials (CRMs) traceable to SI units is easy for liquid samples. This makes ICPE-9820 suitable to be used for preparing reference values on production samples. The complementary strengths and weaknesses of both techniques make Shimadzu’s EDX-7200 Series and ICPE-9800 Series a conclusive solution for the elemental analysis of black mass.</p><p>This application shows how to analyze black mass using ICPE-9800 to obtain an accurate reference value for EDX analysis<sup>1)</sup>.</p><p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p><p>Shimadzu’s ICPE-9800 Series allows to conveniently validate obtained measurement results due to the ability to compare and add additional analysis lines after measurement. Liquid solutions allow for dilution or spike recovery experiments, that cannot be easily recreated with solid samples. Compared to ED-XRF however, sample preparation is vastly more extensive. That is why both techniques complement another that well. The herewith presented results will serve as reference values for calibration of Shimadzu’s EDX-7200 to set up as a fast analysis procedure for on-site analysis of black mass that is equivalent to results obtained using ICPE-9800 Series<sup>2)</sup>.</p><h4><strong>4. Several scientific studies have provided evidence supporting the importance of element analysis in various aspects of healthcare, whether it can be nutritional assessment, toxic element exposure or medical conditions.</p><p>In recent times, ICP-MS is state of the art choice for routine analysis of elements in blood serum. Different aspects like robustness and throughput form the principles of this method, while not compromising reliability.</p><p>Important aspects to take into consideration are highlighted within this note, especially aiming to reduce sample volume and measurement time, allowing to quantify more than 20 elements in ~2.0 min. while avoiding more complex sample injection techniques.</p><p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p><p>For routine use, the ICPMS-2040 LF is highly suitable for analyzing trace elements in human and veterinary blood serum. The method allows for the measurement of samples from extremely low serum volumes.</p><p>To measure Se more sensitive and without double charged ion interferences of Gd, ICPMS-2050 LF is the instrument of choice.</p><p>More than 20 elements can be measured at a rate of 30 samples per hour. The low consumption of argon and helium, combined with reduced power consumption for operating the Minitorch plasma and short sample cycle time, makes it exceptionally cost-effective without compromising sensitivity.</p><p>Besides the mentioned elements, further ones like nickel (Ni), chromium (Cr) and manganese (Mn) have been successfully evaluated in shorter batches and can be simply added to make the method once more universal.</p><h4><strong>2. Although there are laws, regulations, and measures in place to minimize and control disposal and release into the environment, wastes reduction from anthropogenic sources will continue to be a challenge. The United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Land Management and Emergency Response (OLEM) includes the Office of Resource Conservation and Recovery (ORCR) which implements the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). The RCRA gives the EPA the authority to control the generation, transportation, treatment, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste. To do this, the EPA developed regulations, guidelines, and policies for proper and safe management and cleanup of hazardous wastes and programs for pollution prevention and recycling:</p><ul><li>Conserve energy and natural resources by recycling and recovery</li><li>Reduce or eliminate waste</li><li>Clean up waste that may have spilled, leaked, or was disposed of improperly</li></ul><p>The EPA developed various test methods for the analysis of contaminants in environmental samples, which can be found in the publication “Test Methods for Evaluating Solid Waste: &nbsp;Physical/Chemical Methods,” also known as SW-846. This is the EPA’s official compendium of analytical and sampling methods that have been evaluated and approved for use by waste management programs to comply with RCRA regulations. The SW-846 compendium functions primarily as a guidance document setting forth acceptable, although not required, methods for the regulated and regulatory communities to use in response to RCRA-related sampling and analysis requirements. SW-846 is a multi-volume document that changes over time as new information and data are developed. This application note will discuss the workflow developed for the analysis of different types of water, wastewater, and digested soil samples using the iCAP MSX ICP-MS, which offers a comprehensive solution for effective and reliable analysis of high dissolved solid containing samples. Thermo Scientific™ Qtegra™ Intelligent Scientific Data Solution™ (ISDS) Software was used to control the ICP-MS instrument and to generate, process and report analytical data, ensuring that the entire workflow meets the requirements specified in EPA Method 6020B, including quality control samples. To verify the consistent performance of the instrument over time, a sequence of 240 samples was repeated over two consecutive days resulting in a total of 480 samples analyzed.</p><p><strong>Summary</strong></p><p>The iCAP MSX ICP-MS was extensively tested for compliance with EPA Method 6020B. The quality of the analytical data obtained over two consecutive days of measurements demonstrated that the built-in Argon Gas Dilution system for controlled and automatic dilution of the sample aerosol is a powerful solution for laboratories analyzing demanding samples, such as soil digests or wastewater, under high-throughput conditions. The overall performance of the instrument suggests that reliable analysis of these types of samples can be performed without need of any maintenance and with no instrument downtime over three or more days of analytical work. Some of the important outcomes of this study are summarized below:</p><ul><li>All the requirements of EPA Method 6020B were met during the test period of two days, enabling the analysis of a total of 480 samples.</li><li>The instrument detection limits (IDLs) and lower limits of quantification (LLOQs) achieved met and exceeded the requirements given in the method, which suggests that the employed methodology, with its optimized argon gas sample dilution, is suitable for achieving the required robustness and instrument sensitivity for these types of samples.</li><li>Results observed during analysis of ICB and CCB QC standards indicate that the proposed method ensures minimum carryover between samples, enabling trouble-free measurement of high matrix samples across the full calibrated concentration range.</li><li>The accuracy obtained for ICV and CCV standard solutions ensures the reliability and consistency of instrument performance while analyzing challenging high TDS containing samples such as wastewater and solid waste digests.</li><li>The analytical data obtained during analysis of interference check solutions (ICSA and ICSAB) highlight the effectiveness of single KED mode using helium as collision gas in removing potential polyatomic interferences on each analyte, ensuring interference-free analysis every time.</li><li>The data obtained during analysis of matrix spiked and duplicate measurements demonstrate that minimal or no matrix effect was encountered when analyzing complex matrices such as wastewater.</li><li>The observed behavior of the internal standards on two consecutive days of analysis highlights the robustness and consistency of the instrument performance. The consistent internal standard readback within the range of 80–120% suggests that the developed methodology is a reliable solution for effective handling of high TDS containing samples with no impact from the matrix content.</li><li>Qtegra ISDS Software provides all the necessary tools, including different QC functions, automatic calculations and limit and flag functionality, to ensure that the analysis is performed as per the compliance requirements of EPA Method 6020B.</li></ul><h4><strong>4. Metrohm: </strong><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gcms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_nir_121_download_0bb1185dc9.pdf"><strong>Water content in propylene glycol monomethyl ether (PGME)</strong></a></h4><ul><li>Application</li></ul><h5>Water determination possible within seconds using NIRS</h5><p>Propylene glycol monomethyl ether (1-methoxy-2-propanol, or PGME) is one of many glycol ether solvents with a wide variety of applications. It is used as an intermediate and in formulations for industrial, professional, or consumer applications, mainly in surface coatings, inks for printing, cleaning solutions, deicing/anti-icing formulations, and agrochemical purposes. It is also used as an extractant and as a coalescing agent and flow improver in water-based paints.</p><p>Water in propylene glycol methyl ether is usually measured by Karl Fischer (KF) titration which requires chemicals and takes about five minutes per determination. This Application Note describes how near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) can be used as a faster and more cost-efficient alternative for water determination in PGME.</p><p><strong>CONCLUSION</strong></p><p>This Application Note demonstrates the feasibility to determine a key parameter for the quality control of propylene glycol monomethyl ether (water content) with NIR spectroscopy. The main advantages of NIR spectroscopy over wet chemical methods are that running costs are significantly lower and time-to-result is significantly reduced. Additionally, no chemicals are required, and the technique is non-destructive to samples.</p>

Within biological systems, endogenous elements are critical for maintaining metal homeostasis in cells, a fundamental aspect in disease progression when disrupted. Additionally, elements from the higher mass range may originate from various sources such as metal-tags for immuno-mass spectrometry, nanoparticles, or metal-based anticancer drugs. This study assesses the efficacy of collision/reacton cell (CCT) mode for simultaneously analysing elements across the complete mass spectrum. Furthermore, we demonstrate the accuracy of the LA-ICP-TOFMS methodology through the analysis of serum reference material.</span></p><h5><span lang="EN"><strong>Results</strong></span></h5><p><span lang="EN">Our findings demonstrate that the CCT mode outperforms the standard/no gas mode for LA-ICP-TOFMS measurements, particularly in quantifying endogenous elements susceptible to interferences. Through the analysis of picolitre-volume micro-droplet standards and serum reference material (deposited as micro-droplets), we observed accurate quantification of elements such as iron and selenium, with isotope ratios closely resembling natural compositions. As key advantage, the utilization of the CCT mode eliminated the need for labor-intensive post-data processing, streamlining analytical procedures. Additionally, the CCT mode also provided enhanced sensitivity (factor of 1.5–2) for elements in the higher mass range compared to the standard mode, without compromising the sensitivity for endogenous elements.</span></p><h5><span lang="EN"><strong>Significance</strong></span></h5><p><span lang="EN">We successfully integrated Seronorm serum reference material-containing micro-droplets into LA-ICPMS bioimaging workflows for quality control, enabling validated measurements of key biological elements. The use of the CCT mode is highly recommended for bioimaging applications that address the analysis of elements across the entire mass range.</span></p><h3><strong>2. Experimental</strong></h3><h4><strong>2.1. Chemicals and reagents</strong></h4><p>Ultrapure water (18.2&nbsp;MΩ&nbsp;cm, ELGA Water purification system, Purelab Ultra MK 2, UK) and nitric acid (&gt;69&nbsp;%, Rotipuran Supra, Carl Roth, Karlsruhe, Germany) were used for dilutions of the standard solutions. A multi-element stock solution and single element standard solutions were purchased from Labkings (Hilversum, The Netherlands). Gelatin was obtained from Sigma-Aldrich (Vienna, Austria). The serum reference material Seronorm (Seronorm™ Trace Elements Serum L-1, Norway) was reconstituted according to the manufacturer's protocol. Solution preparations and LA-ICP-TOFMS measurements were carried out in clean room classes ISO 8 and ISO 7, respectively.</p><h4><strong>2.2. Calibration standards based on multi-element gelatin micro-droplets</strong></h4><p>Gelatin-based micro-droplet standards were prepared according to a previously described procedure [<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0003267024011462#bib20"><span>20</span></a>]. For this purpose, liquid multi-element standard solutions were prepared in different concentrations gravimetrically from standard stock solutions and mixed with a fish gelatin solution (10&nbsp;%, w/w) to reach a final concentration of 1&nbsp;% (w/w) gelatin. The resulting solutions were transferred into the sample source of a micro-spotter system. A CellenONE X1 micro-spotter (Cellenion, Lyon, France) was used to generate arrays of the gelatin micro-droplet standards onto glass slides with a droplet volume of around 400&nbsp;pL resulting in droplet sizes of approximately 150–200&nbsp;μm in diameter. The diameter of the droplets was measured by a built-in camera of the micro-spotting system before and after each spot run and used to calculate the exact volumes of the droplets. The picolitre-volumes were used to establish the absolute elemental amounts within the droplet standards. The slides were stored at room temperature in the dark until LA-ICP-TOFMS analysis and proved to be stable for up to 12 months. The entire micro-droplets were selectively and quantitatively ablated [<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0003267024011462#bib27"><span>27</span></a><span>] and multi-element analysis was performed by LA-ICP-TOFMS imaging. The multi-element gelatin micro-droplet standards contained 48 elements in different concentrations (summarized in </span><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0003267024011462#appsec1"><span>Table S1</span></a><span>).</span></p><h4><span><strong>2.3. Dispensing of serum reference material</strong></span></h4><p><span>The serum reference material Seronorm (Seronorm™ Trace Elements Serum L-1, Norway) was reconstituted according to the manufacturer's protocol. The resulting solution was immediately transferred to the sample source of the CellenONE X1 micro-spotter (Cellenion, Lyon, France). Serum reference material was dispensed onto glass slides resulting in micro-droplets with a volume of around 400&nbsp;pL and a droplet size of around 150–200&nbsp;μm in diameter. The laser fluence was adjusted to selectively and quantitatively ablate the entire micro-droplets containing the serum reference material without co-ablation of the glass slide. LA-ICP-TOFMS analysis was performed and the elemental concentrations quantified by using the micro-droplet standards with the same laser ablation parameters. The micro-droplets containing the serum Seronorm reference material proved to be stable over 6 months upon storage at room temperature in the dark (refer to&nbsp;</span><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0003267024011462#appsec1"><span>Table S2</span></a><span> for stability data).</span></p><h4><span><strong>2.4. LA-ICP-TOFMS measurements</strong></span></h4><p><span>An Iridia 193&nbsp;nm excimer laser ablation system (Teledyne Photon Machines, Bozeman, MT, USA) was coupled to an </span><i><span>icp</span></i><span>TOF 2R (TOFWERK AG, Thun, Switzerland) TOF-based ICP-MS instrument. The LA system was equipped with a low-dispersion ablation cell [</span><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0003267024011462#bib7"><span>7</span></a><span>,</span><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0003267024011462#bib28"><span>28</span></a><span>] within the Cobalt ablation chamber and connected to the ICP-TOFMS system via the aerosol rapid introduction system (ARIS). Through the low-dispersion mixing bulb of the ARIS, an Ar make-up gas flow (</span><span style="font-family:&quot;Cambria Math&quot;,serif;"><span>∼</span></span><span>0.90–1.10&nbsp;L&nbsp;min<sup>−1</sup>) was introduced into the He carrier gas flow (0.60&nbsp;L&nbsp;min<sup>−1</sup>) before entering the plasma. The LA and ICP-TOFMS settings were optimized on a daily basis while ablating NIST SRM612 glass certified reference material (National Institute for Standards and Technology, Gaithersburg, MD, USA). Optimization was based on high intensities for <sup>26</sup>Mg<sup>+</sup>, <sup>59</sup>Co<sup>+</sup>, <sup>115</sup>In<sup>+</sup> and <sup>238</sup>U<sup>+</sup>, low oxide formation based on the <sup>238</sup>U<sup>16</sup>O<sup>+</sup>/<sup>238</sup>U<sup>+</sup> ratio (&lt;2&nbsp;%) and low elemental fractionation based on the <sup>238</sup>U<sup>+</sup>/<sup>232</sup>Th&nbsp;<sup>+</sup>&nbsp;ratio (</span><span style="font-family:&quot;Cambria Math&quot;,serif;"><span>∼</span></span><span>1.1).</span></p><p><span>Laser ablation sampling was performed in fixed dosage mode 2, at a repetition rate of 250&nbsp;Hz and using different spot sizes: 20, 10, 5 and 2&nbsp;μm, resulting in pixel sizes of 10, 5, 2.5 and 1&nbsp;μm. Selective ablation of the standards and the sample micro-droplets was achieved by selecting an energy density below the ablation threshold of glass and above the ablation threshold of gelatin and the samples [</span><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0003267024011462#bib27"><span>27</span></a><span>]. Gelatin micro-droplet standards and Seronorm containing micro-droplets were ablated quantitatively using the same LA parameters and a fluence of 0.40&nbsp;J&nbsp;cm<sup>−2</sup>.</span></p><p><span>The </span><i><span>icp</span></i><span>TOF 2R ICP-TOFMS instrument has a specified mass resolution (R&nbsp;=&nbsp;m/Δm) of 6000 (full width half-maximum definition). The standard operation mode was used, which balances mass resolving power, sensitivity and ion transmission across the entire measured mass range and which allows the analysis of ions from </span><i><span>m/z</span></i><span>&nbsp;=&nbsp;14–256. The integration and read-out rate match the LA repetition rate. The instrument was equipped with a torch injector of 2.5&nbsp;mm inner diameter and nickel sample and skimmer cones with a skimmer cone insert of 2.8&nbsp;mm in diameter. A radio frequency power of 1440&nbsp;W, an auxiliary Ar gas flow rate of 0.80&nbsp;L&nbsp;min<sup>−1</sup> and a plasma Ar gas flow rate of 14&nbsp;L&nbsp;min<sup>−1</sup> was used. In case the CCT mode was used, the collision/reaction cell was pressurized with a mixture of H<sub>2</sub>/He gas with an optimized gas flow rate of 4.20–5.0&nbsp;mL&nbsp;min<sup>−1</sup>. Instrumental parameters for LA-ICP-TOFMS measurements are summarized in&nbsp;</span><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0003267024011462#appsec1"><span>Table S3</span></a>.</p><h4><strong>2.5. Data acquisition and processing</strong></h4><p>Data was recorded using TofPilot 2.10.3.0 (TOFWERK AG, Thun, Switzerland). The LA-ICP-TOFMS data were saved in the open-source hierarchical data format (HDF5, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="http://www.hdfgroup.org">www.hdfgroup.org</a>). Post-acquisition data processing of data acquired in standard/no gas mode was performed with Tofware v3.2.2.1, which is a TOFWERK data analysis package and used as an add-on on IgorPro (Wavemetrics Inc., Oregon, USA). The data processing comprised the following steps: (1) drift correction of the mass peak position in the spectra over time via time-dependent mass calibration (2) determining the peak shape and (3) fitting and subtracting the mass spectral base-line.</p><p>Data from TofPilot (in case the CCT mode was used) and from Tofware (in case the standard mode was used) were further processed with HDIP version 1.8.5. (Teledyne Photon Machines, Bozeman, MT, USA). An integrated script was used to automatically process the files generated by TofPilot or Tofware and to generate 2D elemental distribution maps. For calibration, signal responses for each mass channel monitored during ablation of a single spiked droplet were integrated using HDIP. The sum of the elemental signal intensities and the absolute masses of the respective elements within the droplet standards were used to set up calibration curves. Signal responses for each mass channel monitored during ablation were also integrated for the droplets containing serum reference material, using HDIP.</p><h3><strong>4. Conclusions</strong></h3><p>The use of the CCT mode (cell pressurized with a He/H<sub>2</sub> gas mixture) proved to be superior to the standard/no gas mode for LA-ICP-TOFMS bioimaging applications aimed at analyzing elements across the entire mass range. Accurate quantification of endogenous elements that are subjected to interferences was achieved from picolitre-volume micro-droplet standards, as demonstrated by the analysis of micro-droplets containing serum reference material. For iron and selenium, isotope ratios in the CCT mode closely matched the natural ones. In addition, the sensitivity of elements from the higher mass range was better by a factor of 1.5 to 2.0 in the CCT mode compared to the standard mode. In case the CCT mode was used, no laborious post-data strategies were required to obtain accurate results, which is another advantage towards the use of the standard mode.</p><p>We have demonstrated the successful integration of Seronorm™ serum reference material into quantitative LA-ICPMS bioimaging workflows as an accuracy control. This validation step of quantitative measurement results can be especially attractive for industry, where quality control is a main requirement. The analysis of n&nbsp;=&nbsp;3 quality control samples adds around 5&nbsp;min of analysis time to a calibration sequence providing validated measurements of endogenous elements with biological key functions. Future directions towards one point-calibration approaches can further reduce the time required for calibration and quality control of LA-ICPMS results.</p>

Specific mechanical or chemical properties are often dependent on the presence and level of certain elements in the material. As a large proportion of construction materials are based on metallurgical products, it is critical to understand the concentrations of the trace elements in pure metals or alloys. Modern metal-based &nbsp;materials can be classified into non-ferrous and ferrous metals. Ferrous materials are based on iron as the main component, and therefore include different types of steel (i.e., cast iron or stainless steel). This leads to properties such as high temperature resistance as well as the<br>potential for being recycled easily. On the contrary, non-ferrous materials do not contain iron and refer to metals such as aluminium, copper, or zinc, and alloys such as brass.</p><p>Both ferrous and non-ferrous materials play crucial roles in various industries, such as modern architecture and construction, automotive, aerospace, electronics, and (clean) energy generation. Understanding the characteristics, properties, and potential impact of processing techniques is essential for metallurgical engineers to design and produce high-quality products for different applications. The exact composition, including major components, additives, and trace impurities, needs to be thoroughly determined to ensure the final product meets the performance requirements in terms of corrosion and heat resistance, conductivity, or formability.</p><p>Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is often the technique of choice for the determination of impurities at trace and ultra-trace levels due to its outstanding sensitivity. As a full multi-elemental analysis can be accomplished in only a few minutes, it also allows high sample throughput. However, ICP-MS is also well known for its historically limited ability to analyze samples with elevated matrix load. The sample matrix could significantly affect the sensitivity of the instrument, cause intensity fluctuation of the internal standard (suppression and drift), and lead to increased system maintenance with unwanted downtime due to obstruction of the interface cones, torch and injector,<br>or the nebulizer. To overcome this limitation, samples must be diluted, either using liquid diluents or using argon gas provided directly from the instrument itself.</p><p>This application note focuses on the development of a fast, robust, and accurate method for the analysis of bulk and trace elements in ferrous and non-ferrous materials using the Thermo Scientific™ iCAP™ MSX ICP-MS with Argon Gas Dilution (AGD).</p><p><strong>Conclusions</strong></p><p>The iCAP MSX ICP-MS was used to analyze 20 elements in digested nickel superalloys certified reference materials, as well as selected single element standard solutions containing 1,000 mg·L-1 of elements typically used for the preparation of non-ferrous materials and alloys. Among the analytes, several critical interferences can cause unexpected bias, however He KED mode allowed consistent removal in most cases. This analytical method was rigorously tested, and the results obtained clearly demonstrated the following analytical advantages:</p><ul><li>The use of a single measurement mode in combination with other features to increase productivity of the instrument allowed the total analysis time to be reduced to &lt;3 min/sample (including uptake and wash time).</li><li>The analysis results for the 20 elements under investigation (comprising both major components as well as trace and ultra-trace level impurities) showed excellent agreement with certified values.</li><li>The developed method provides the required detection limits and a linear response for all analytes and allows coverage of a dynamic range between 25 to 1,000,000 μg·L-1.&nbsp;</li></ul><p>The use of Argon Gas Dilution (AGD Level 5) was proven to be an effective way to overcome the challenges associated with high and moreover variable matrix content. Dilution is accomplished automatically inside the instrument with no additional sample handling required. AGD is fully integrated and supported in the<br>Qtegra ISDS Software, so that it is easy to set up and operate.</p><h4><strong>2. Shimadzu: </strong><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_01_00803_en_c98879da3a.pdf"><strong>Screening Analysis of Trace Heavy Metals in Powdered Milk</strong></a></h4><ul><li>Application</li></ul><p><strong>User Benefits</strong></p><ul><li>ALTRACE realizes the same analysis sensitivity as the conventional instrument (EDX-7000) in 1/10 the measurement time.</li><li>Improved workability can be expected, as continuous analysis of up to 48 specimens is possible.</li><li>Simple screening analysis of heavy metals without complex sample preparation is possible because it is only necessary to set the sample in the sample holder.</li></ul><p><strong>Introduction</strong></p><p>One test method for heavy metals in food products is the color reaction (staining) method, but because that method cannot identify metals (elements) or is influenced by the sample components, AA (atomic absorption spectrophotometry), ICP-AES (inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry) or ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry) is used for elemental analysis. However, sample preparation for these test and analysis methods requires a lot of work, such as component extraction with reagents and acidic cleavage, and in the case of the staining method, individual differences in judgment have become an issue in production process and quality control. For this reason, we propose a method using energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRF), which enables simple analysis in the entire process from sample preparation to measurement and judgment.</p><p>In general, quantitation by EDXRF at levels below 1 ppm is difficult, as shown in Table 1, because these values are around or below the limit of quantitation. However, in the case of powdered milk, the standard values for the powder form before dissolution in hot water are about 7.7 times higher than the values shown in Table 1. This means that a screening analysis to determine whether the concentration is below the standard value or not is possible with EDXRF, which can analyze powders as-is.</p><p>Since the sensitivity of the ALTRACE for heavy metal elements was substantially improved in comparison with the conventional EDXRF (EDX-7000) by installing a high output X-ray tube, it is now possible to analyze samples with same sensitivity as the conventional instrument in only 1/10 the measurement time.</p><p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p><p>Excellent results were obtained for both the calibration curves and the analysis results of powdered milk. In an argon plasma, complete ionization is typically only achieved for elements with ionization potentials below 6 eV, such as alkaline and alkaline earth elements. Typical transition metals, precious metals, and rare earth elements still ionize at close to 100%. However, semi-metals and in particular non-metals, like silicon, sulfur, or halogens, will only poorly ionize. At the same time, their signals are found in the low mass range (often below m/z 50), where many ions are lost in the transition through the mass spectrometer. In addition, other factors may significantly impact the analysis, for example, isobaric and polyatomic interferences leading to bias on the most abundant isotope for a given element, and hence forcing analysts to often select a less sensitive, but interference-free alternative. Especially polyatomic interferences are abundant in the low mass range and may render the analysis using ICP-MS nearly impossible.</p><p>The analysis of halogens is of importance in a variety of sample matrices pertaining to different industries, such as environmental monitoring, pharmaceuticals, oil and gas, and industrial applications such as Li-ion battery and renewable fuels. Ion chromatography (IC) is a commonly used technique for analysis of halogens, whereas argon plasma-based techniques, like ICP-OES or ICP-MS, have limited applications for this purpose. However, its outstanding characteristics as an element selective detection system have led to the development of applications highly complementary to chromatographic techniques, for example, for the detection of PFAS.</p><p>This note describes the analytical workflows developed with the Thermo Scientific™ iCAP™ MTX ICP-MS to mitigate these analytical challenges associated with the analysis of halogens using ICP-MS.</p><p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p><p>This document highlights how triple quadrupole ICP-MS, such as the iCAP MTX ICP-MS operated in TQ-O2 mode, can be used for accurate and precise quantification of challenging analytes such as chlorine, bromine, and iodine, which can be analyzed directly using optimized instrument conditions. It further highlights the feasibility of the iCAP MTX ICP-MS for indirect but accurate and precise determination of fluorine after complex formation with barium under optimized and controlled conditions. It further summarizes details of iodine (127I) analysis using helium as cell gas in SQ-KED mode. Therefore, mechanical parts with rubber joined to metal<br>are widely used in automotive, industrial machinery, and other fields. However, joining parts with dissimilar properties can cause defects from heat, vibration, or other factors present during manufacturing processes or product use. In particular, rubber can potentially deteriorate at metal contact surfaces due to high metal temperatures without showing any symptoms significant enough for the deterioration to be discovered. Consequently, non-destructive inspections are required to evaluate deterioration and defects before they appear.</p><p>X-ray CT systems offer one type of non-destructive inspection. They can visually show the internal status of joined metal-rubber parts in order to assess the position and shape of internal defects without damaging the part. This article describes using an inspeXio SMX-225CT FPD HR Plus microfocus X-ray CT system (Fig. 1) to observe rollers made with rubber joined to metal.</p><p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p><p>his article describes using an inspeXio SMX-225CT FPD HR Plus microfocus X-ray CT system to scan rollers made of rubber bonded to metal.</p><p>The system enables non-destructive discovery of rubber deterioration and debonding, regardless of whether or not the exterior appears normal. The progression of rubber deterioration can be observed by detailed observations of cross-sectional images or by comparing the volumes of deteriorated portions. Color-coding the deteriorated or debonded areas can &nbsp;provide a 3D understanding of the position and shape of those areas. Thus, X-ray CT imaging provides a useful way to inspect the quality of parts made with rubber bonded to metal.</p><h4><strong>4.
