The 19th Czech - Slovak Spectroscopis Conference (19th CSSC) is a proceeding based on a long-term scientific cooperation between Ioannes Marcus Marci Spectroscopic Society and The Slovak Spectroscopic Society. The meetings organized by the former Czechoslovak spectroscopic society (1949 – 1993) in the past and the continuation in this tradition in the form national Slovak and Czech spectroscopic conferences now, since 2008, exist as a joint event.The Czech spectroscopic conference was repeated every four years, while the Slovak spectroscopic conference took place biannually. Joint scientific meetings are now held every two years, alternating between the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The order may change if this conference is combined with the European Symposium on Analytical Spectrometry (ESAS). <h4>The problem&nbsp;</h4>We live in a “global village” but we are all different and we use many different languages to communicate.&nbsp;Even when people speak the same language, the same words may be used with different meanings. See, for example, some different uses of the word “standard” in English – a normative document, a solution of known concentration or even a type of flag.&nbsp;Even in the same area of activity misunderstandings do occur which may result in a waste of time and money, or even worse consequences.&nbsp;When talking about laboratory tests, lack of a full understanding of key terms and inappropriate translations leaves room for different interpretations of stated requirements. For example, there have historically been a number of different but related uses of the term ‘detection limit’. This may lead to inadequate fulfilment of those requirements, thus becoming an obstacle to the production of analytical data that is fit for its intended use. A shared interpretation of concepts related to quality in measurement between laboratories and accreditation bodies is also crucial for a fair and harmonised approach to laboratory assessment across the world.&nbsp;<h4>A common language&nbsp;</h4>We need a common language; clear and unambiguous. We need a common vocabulary to provide consistent definitions of concepts with their associated terms. To this end, several organisations participate in a joint effort to develop and maintain an international vocabulary of metrology (VIM) [1], which aims to achieve a unique understanding of concepts related to measurements across all sectors. The VIM is a normative reference in the standards ISO/IEC 17025, ISO 15189 and ISO/IEC 17043, and is therefore a key document for all organisations seeking accreditation.&nbsp;<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/Eurachem_You_talk_we_understand_The_way_out_of_the_tower_of_Babel_Standards_8d947dbd5f.jpg" alt="Eurachem: You talk, we understand – The way out of the tower of Babel_A common language" srcset="https://storage.googleapis.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/thumbnail_Eurachem_You_talk_we_understand_The_way_out_of_the_tower_of_Babel_Standards_8d947dbd5f.jpg 245w," sizes="100vw" width="1126" height="499"><h4>Is this enough?&nbsp;</h4>For laboratory staff some problems still stand and need to be addressed:&nbsp;<ul><li>Many people are confused about both concepts and terms.&nbsp;</li><li>It may be difficult to understand the “formal” VIM definitions – they are short statements intended to apply to many different measurement sectors.</li><li>Translations into local languages may add to the confusion, e.g. if different terms are used in different sectors for the same VIM concept and the translator overlooks this issue.</li><li>Some substantial changes to terminology have been made in an attempt to accommodate chemical and biological measurements. Some “old” concepts still stand but have new names, e.g. “within laboratory reproducibility” vs. “intermediate precision”.&nbsp;</li></ul>To address these issues Eurachem has produced a guide [2] which provides an accessible reference containing simple and in context explanations of terms most relevant to analysts, with additional examples relating those concepts to chemical and biological measurements.&nbsp;<h4>Do you understand the meaning of these terms?&nbsp;</h4>Are you interested in a quantity or a quality? Depending on the answer, will you use a measurement procedure or an examination? Is method verification the same or less demanding than method validation? Do you need a calibration or just performance verification? Do you have a measurement standard in your laboratory? Is metrological traceability something you worry about? How the hardware and software of the iCAP TQe/TQ enhance performance and simplify your analysis.

The issue of spectral interferences in quadrupole ICP-MS and the negative effects these have on trace element data accuracy and detection limits has been known since the early days of the technology.
During the 1990’s, the advent of collision cell technology enabled significant reduction of a range of the most well-known interferences, such as ArO (on Fe), ArCl (on As) and ArAr (on Se) to be achieved, but challenges, such as doubly-charged ion and isobaric (same isotope mass) overlap interference, remained. The development of triple quadrupole ICP-MS in the last few years has provided a solution to these challenges by enabling much more selective interference control. With triple quadrupole instruments, this selectivity is achieved through a combination of mass pre-filtering prior to the collision cell of the instrument and use of reactive gases, such as oxygen, hydrogen and ammonia in the cell, to remove interferences via chemical reactions. In part 1 of this this 2-part webinar series, the theory and practice of triple quadrupole ICP-MS in comparison to single quadrupole ICP-MS will first be presented. The focus of the presentation will then move on to the performance of a new, workhorse instrument that utilises only He and O2 collision / reaction cell gases to remove the most commonly encountered interferences, the Thermo Scientific™ iCAP™ TQe triple quadrupole ICP-MS.

In part 1 of this 2-part webinar series, the theory and practice of triple quadrupole ICP-MS in comparison to single quadrupole ICP-MS was presented and our new iCAP™ TQe triple quadrupole ICP-MS was introduced.
The iCAP TQe offers enhanced removal of the most commonly encountered interferences, such as argon based polyatomic species and doubly charged rare earth element interferences, using only helium and oxygen collision / reaction cell gases. However, there are some interferences (such as GdO (on Yb) and PtH (on Au)) that cannot be fully eliminated with just helium and oxygen cell gases and for these interferences the even more reactive gas, ammonia, is required. There are also some applications, such as measurement of 40Ca (which is strongly interfered by 40Ar) that benefit from the use of hydrogen cell gas. In part 2 of this webinar series, the capabilities of our fully flexible triple quadrupole ICP-MS, the Thermo Scientific™ iCAP™ TQ for removing more complex and challenging interferences will be described and results for selected applications that require use of hydrogen and ammonia cell gases will be presented.

With the advent of triple quadrupole technology, a new level of interference removal in ICP-MS has been achieved. The implementation of an additional quadrupole before the collision cell of the instrument allows pre-filtering of the ion beam to selectively transmit only the masses of interest, which alleviates the problem of unwanted side interference production in the cell through collisions between other masses in the sample and the cell gas. This pre-filtering capability also allows selective chemical reactions to be conducted in the cell to enhance polyatomic interference removal and, in many cases, solve the problem of isobaric overlap. In this presentation, the latest advances in triple quadrupole ICP-MS technology and how these apply to routine analysis of environmental will be described.

Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is a key technology for trace elements in routine focused laboratories.
The determination of trace elements is regulated in a number of sample matrices, including drinking waters (EPA method 200.8 and ISO method 17294), waste waters (EPA method 6020B), foodstuffs (AOAC method 2015.01) and pharmaceutical products (United States Pharmacopeia chapters &lt;232&gt; and &lt;233&gt;).
In many cases, contract laboratories are key players to turn over the large amount of samples coming through from smaller and mid-size municipalities (unable to perform cost-efficient testing themselves), or companies that do not want to operate specialized laboratories with lower sample throughput. Contract laboratories can, therefore, offer cost-efficient analysis through higher numbers of samples, and specialize to offer dedicated solutions for key requirements. Consequently, contract laboratories have a stringent demand set on analytical instruments, allowing them to be highly cost efficient, through minimized sample turnover times, and maximized system uptime.
