In the current study, an automated, micro-flow autosampler in combination with an Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) is used in the elemental analysis of nanoparticles and yeast cells. The sample introduction system is designed to deliver intact single cells or cell clusters to the plasma, while the ICP-MS offers high sensitivity for elemental determination within the cell or cell cluster. The elementsthat should be considered in risk assessments differ, depending on the administration route of the drug product. For oral preparations, only seven elements of Class 1 and 2A should be considered, except for the intentional addition of elements such as catalyst utilization during synthesis. However, the origins of contamination by elemental impurities are diverse, including not only the components of the drug substance and additives, but also manufacturing equipment and implements. Therefore, a screening analysis was carried out for all 24 elements, considering potential elemental impurities. In addition, when internal standard correction is to be used, as in a related article a, the content of candidate internal standard elements in the specimens must be verified in advance. In this article, a simple concentration analysis of the 24 elements in a drug product as elemental impurities was carried out using the preset method for screening analysis of drug products, which is included in the ICPMS-2040/2050 (Fig. 1). The concentration of the elements used in internal standard correction in the drug was also measured, and it was found that the elements can be used in correction.</p><p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> In this article, a simultaneous screening analysis of 24 elemental impurity elements in an oral drug product and candidate elements for internal standard correction was carried out using an ICPMS-2040/2050. <p><strong>A cubic millimeter of brain tissue may not sound like much. But considering that that tiny square contains 57,000 cells, 230 millimeters of blood vessels, and 150 million synapses, all amounting to 1,400 terabytes of data, Harvard and Google researchers have just accomplished something stupendous.</strong></p><p>Led by Jeff Lichtman, the Jeremy R. Knowles Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2024/04/jeff-lichtman-named-dean-of-science/"><strong>newly appointed dean of science</strong></a>, the Harvard team helped create the largest 3D brain reconstruction to date, showing in vivid detail each cell and its web of connections in a piece of temporal cortex about half the size of a rice grain.</p><p>Published in Science, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adk4858"><strong>the study</strong></a> is the latest development in a nearly 10-year collaboration with scientists at Google Research, combining Lichtman’s electron microscopy imaging with AI algorithms to color-code and reconstruct the extremely complex wiring of mammal brains. The team also noted oddities in the tissue, such as a small number of axons that formed extensive whorls. Because the sample was taken from a patient with epilepsy, the researchers don’t know whether such formations are pathological or simply rare.</p><p>Lichtman’s field is connectomics, which seeks to create comprehensive catalogs of brain structure, down to individual cells. Such completed maps would unlock insights into brain function and disease, about which scientists still know very little.</p><p>Google’s state-of-the-art AI algorithms allow for reconstruction and mapping of brain tissue in three dimensions. The team has also developed a suite of <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://h01-release.storage.googleapis.com/landing.html"><strong>publicly available tools</strong></a> researchers can use to examine and annotate the connectome.</p><p><i>“Given the enormous investment put into this project, it was important to present the results in a way that anybody else can now go and benefit from them,”</i> said Google collaborator Viren Jain.</p><p>Next the team will tackle the mouse hippocampal formation, which is important to neuroscience for its role in memory and neurological disease.</p>

Clean Water for Quality Results: Rely on Our Water Systems

<p><strong>Fertilizers manufactured from the sludgy leftovers of wastewater treatment processes can contain traces of potentially hazardous organic chemicals, according to a new study by Johns Hopkins University researchers.</strong></p><p>The research, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.est.4c02934"><strong>published today in journal </strong><i><strong>Environmental Science &amp; Technology</strong></i></a>, provides one of the most comprehensive looks at the chemical composition of so-called biosolids across the country and is the first step toward identifying common chemical contaminants that may need government regulation. The findings could help the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency prioritize which organic compounds to investigate further, the researchers said.</p><p><i>"We've been relatively in the dark when it comes to possible organic hazards in biosolids, and we need to know if there are any smoking guns that we're unaware of,"</i> said <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://engineering.jhu.edu/faculty/carsten-prasse/"><strong>Carsten Prasse</strong></a>, an assistant professor in the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering who studies environmental contaminants. <i>"Regulators need to know what these types of fertilizers are made of to determine how they can be responsibly used."</i></p><blockquote><p><i>"We've been relatively in the dark when it comes to possible organic hazards in biosolids, and we need to know if there are any smoking guns that we're unaware of."</i></p><h5><br>- Carsten Prasse</h5><p><i>Assistant professor, Whiting School</i></p></blockquote><p>Using analytical chemistry techniques capable of identifying thousands of chemicals, Prasse and his team screened 16 samples of biosolids from wastewater treatment facilities in nine U.S. and three Canadian cities. Samples contained traces of pharmaceuticals, industrial chemicals, and a variety of fragrances. Among them were bisphenol A (BPA), commonly found in plastics, and carbamazepine, a drug used to treat epilepsy and bipolar disorder.</p><p><i>"Because there are so many compounds in biosolids, the question we had was how do we triage? How do we find the chemicals that are widespread and could potentially be problematic, that the EPA and other scientists would need to investigate before proposing regulations,"</i> Prasse said.</p><p>The researchers then created lists of the chemicals found in each sample and compared them to compounds that popped up in multiple places across the country. The dashboard helped the team identify which chemicals were most likely to pose threats to human health or the environment.</p><p><i>"We're not saying that these compounds pose a risk right now, because we haven't done a formal risk assessment,"</i> said <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://pure.johnshopkins.edu/en/persons/matthew-newmeyer"><strong>Matthew Newmeyer</strong></a>, a research associate at the Bloomberg School of Public Health and first author on the paper. <i>"We're saying that these have a potential to be problematic and we need more information in order to make sure these biosolids are safe."</i></p><p>Using biosolids can be beneficial, the researchers said. They are rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, and other nutrients that help plants grow. They require less energy to make than synthetic alternatives. And wastewater facilities can sell biosolids to generate revenue to offset treatment costs and reduce waste sent to landfills or incinerators.</p><p>More than half of the 3.76 million tons of biosolids produced in the United States in 2022 fertilized agricultural lands, golf courses, and other landscaped areas, according to the EPA. While direct contact with biosolids is likely limited to occupational exposures, the broader population could be exposed to contaminants absorbed by crops grown in such fertilizers, the researchers said.</p><p>The team plans to measure the identified compounds in the biosolids and vegetables grown in biosolid-amended soil to determine if their concentration levels warrant concern. The researchers are also investigating risks to farmers, landscapers, and composters who work with biosolids.</p><p>Authors include: Keeve Nachman and Qinfan Lyu of Johns Hopkins University, and Jon Sobus and Antony Williams of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.</p><p>This research was supported by U.S. EPA grant R840247 and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention grant T42 OH0008428.</p>

Therefore, any Impurities in them must be carefully monitored. The International Cooperation on Cosmetics Regulation (ICCR) recommended limits for Pb (10 ppm) in 2013 and for Hg (1 ppm) in 2016. Regarding analyzing elements in cosmetics, ISO 1392 (Measurement of traces of heavy metals in cosmetic finished products using ICP/MS technique) was issued on August 17, 2021. This test method demonstrates the technique for measuring heavy metals in cosmetic products using ICP-MS. In this Application news, eight elements, including those listed in ISO 21392 (Cr, Co, Ni, As, Cd, Sb, Pb) and mercury (Hg), were analyzed with the Shimadzu ICPMS-2040/2050 ICP mass spectrometer (Fig. 1).</p><p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> Simultaneous analysis of heavy metals in cosmetics was performed by ICP-MS with reference to ISO21392. It was found that the ICPMS-2040/2050 could be used for analysis with a sensitivity that was well within the required value. The recovery test results were good, and the validity of the analysis was confirmed.</p><p>By using a mini torch, the argon gas consumption and running costs were reduced.</p><h4><strong>4. Agilent Technologies: </strong><style type="text/css"></style><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_Na_PF_6_batteries_icp_oes_5994_7609en_agilent_8eaea35159.pdf"><strong>Rapid Assay of Sodium Hexafluorophosphate for Use in Sodium-Ion Batteries by ICP-OES</strong></a></h4><ul><li>application</li></ul><h5><strong>Quantification of 26 impurity elements in sodium salt-based electrolytes using ICP-OES</strong></h5><p><strong>Introduction:</strong> Sodium-ion battery (Na-ion battery, SIB, or NIB) technology is still emerging, although battery packs are already being used in stationary energy storage systems and low-cost electric transport applications, including electric vehicles. China dominates global SIB production, accounting for roughly 95% of the world's capacity. However, interest and development of this technology is also increasing in other regions due to the cost-effectiveness, safety, fast charging times, and long life cycles of SIBs. The production capacity of the batteries worldwide is expected to rise significantly by 2030.</p><p>The electrolyte of a battery facilitates the movement of ions between the cathode and anode, making it a key component that affects the charge transfer properties and overall performance of the final device. Many SIBs use a Na-conducting salt as the electrolyte, such as sodium hexafluorophosphate (NaPF<sub>6</sub>), sodium perchlorate (NaClO<sub>4</sub>), or sodium bistrifluoromethylsulfonimide (NaTFSI).</p><p>NaPF6 is the most widely used salt due to its higher ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability compared to the other salts. However, these properties can be affected by the presence of elemental impurities such as chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn) in the electrolyte. Impurities can also lead to side reactions within the electrolyte or can contribute to the formation of passivation layers on electrode surfaces or current collectors, reducing overall battery efficiency, lifespan, and safety. The detection of trace elements in Na salt electrolytes has therefore become an essential part of the quality control (QC) process in Na-ion battery manufacturing.</p><p>Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) is a fast, robust analytical technique that is widely used for the simultaneous measurement of multiple trace elements in complex battery-related samples.</p><p>However, the presence of many Na and other metal ions in the plasma can affect the analysis of easily ionized elements (EIEs), such as calcium (Ca), lithium (Li), magnesium (Mg), and potassium (K) leading to false high results. To avoid ionization interference by the Na matrix on other elements, ICP-OES is often used in radial view mode. However, radial view mode lacks the sensitivity required for the analysis of trace elements, which is problematic if EIEs are present in the electrolyte at low concentrations. In response to this challenge, an Agilent 5800 Vertical Dual View (VDV) ICP-OES operating in axial view mode was used to determine low-concentration elemental impurities in the Na-based electrolytes. Agilent ICP-OES systems use a resilient, plug-and-play torch configuration to produce a vertical plasma that is especially good at handling challenging matrices, including battery-related samples. The solid-state RF (SSRF) system of the Agilent ICP-OES instruments, operating at 27 MHz, and a Cooled Cone Interface (CCI) produce a reliable, robust, and maintenance-free plasma suitable for high matrix samples, such as Na-salt electrolytes. The CCI deflects the plasma’s cooler tail, avoiding interferences that form in that region and enabling measurement of most elements at trace concentration levels in axial view mode. Matrix matched calibration standards were also used to minimize EIE interferences.</p><p>The 5800 method, which was used to determine 26 analytes in two NaPF6 electrolyte samples, was evaluated in terms of sensitivity, accuracy, and stability. The elements included aluminum, arsenic, boron, beryllium, calcium, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, iron, potassium, lithium, magnesium, manganese, mercury, molybdenum, niobium, nickel, lead, sulfur, tantalum, titanium, tungsten, vanadium, zinc, and zirconium. While there is currently no standard for sodium hexafluorophosphate, many of these elements are specified in the China standard GB/T 19282-2014 for lithium hexafluorophosphate, plus some elements of concern within the industry.</p><h4><strong>5. Agilent Technologies: </strong><style type="text/css"></style><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/te_microplastics_sample_preparation_guide_8700_ldir_5994_7587en_agilent_d9a5b422ed.pdf"><strong>From Collection to Analysis: A Practical Guide to Sample Preparation and Processing of Microplastics</strong></a></h4><ul><li>technical note</li></ul><h5><strong>Essential laboratory setup, sample preparation steps, and analytical methods for analyzing microplastics</strong></h5><p><strong>Introduction: </strong>Microplastics are defined as any polymer that is between 1 and 5,000 μm. They can further be separated into small (1 to 1,000 μm) and large (1 to 5 mm) microplastics. Additionally, they can be distinguished as primary or secondary microplastics. Primary microplastics are plastic particles that have been intentionally manufactured for personal care products, such as microbeads, or for industrial applications, such as pellets. Secondary microplastics are small plastic particles created through larger plastic products that undergo weathering and degradation. Current research has shown that secondary microplastics are more prominent than primary microplastics.</p><p>The analytical process for extracting microplastics from various matrices typically involves sample collection, sample preparation, and instrumental analysis. Each of these steps presents an opportunity for the introduction or loss of microplastics. This highlights the importance of robust sample preparation methods, quality assurance, and quality control (QA/QC) measures. QA/QC practices allow researchers to assess the reliability of data.</p><p>The success of any spectroscopic analysis of microplastic particles relies on the effectiveness of the sample preparation procedure. Inadequate or improper preparation can introduce errors into the analysis, resulting in unreliable data. Whether using infrared (IR) or Raman microscopy, it is essential to isolate microplastic particles and distribute them discretely on a substrate for analysis. The more complex the matrix, the more extensive the preparation required. Standardizing sample preparation methods is crucial for enabling the comparison of results across different studies.</p><p>This guide covers key aspects of sample preparation to ensure accurate and standardized characterization of microplastics relevant to the Agilent 8700 Laser Direct Infrared (LDIR) chemical imaging system. <h4>The Science &nbsp;</h4><p>Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) is a specialized mass spectrometry technique. It can be used to identify the composition of solid surfaces, providing elemental, isotopic, and molecular information with part per million (ppm) sensitivity. ToF-SIMS spectra, however, may contain numerous individual ion signals, which can be hard to distinguish without dedicated statistical tools. Statistical techniques, such as principal component analysis (PCA), have been widely used to visualize differences of ToF-SIMS spectra and have shown great success. But chemically understanding of these differences, especially for less experienced users, has long been challenging. To solve this issue, a new and flexible software tool based on Python was developed where artificial intelligence (AI)–machine learning functions are incorporated to help users chemically understand complex spectra generated from ToF-SIMS. This saves users a lot of time in data report processing. The new package is free, open-source software that comes with a detailed manual, making it user-friendly and straightforward to understand. The new package is flexible, powerful, and extensible. For example, most exported parameters can be customized. Additionally, some basic AI functions have been integrated into the software package, and many other AI/machine learning functions in the Python system are available for exploring more powerful capabilities. In principle, the software package can be used to treat many types of spectra data, such as Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS), matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS), infrared spectroscopy (IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).&nbsp;</p><h4><strong>Summary&nbsp;</strong></h4><p>So far, several software tools have been developed for PCA of ToF-SIMS spectra; however, none of them are freely available. Such a situation leads to some difficulties in extending applications of PCA to various research fields. More importantly, it has long been challenging for common researchers to understand PCA plots and extract chemical differences among samples. In this work, a team of researchers from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.emsl.pnnl.gov/">Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory</a>, a Department of Energy Office of Science user facility, developed a new and flexible software tool called “Advanced Spectra PCA Toolbox.” The software is based on Python for PCA of complex ToF-SIMS spectra and features an easy-to-read manual. It can generate data analysis reports automatically to explain chemical differences among samples, helping less experienced researchers easily understand tricky PCA results. Moreover, it is expandable and compatible with AI/machine learning functions. Pure goethite and different lignin-adsorbed goethite samples were used as a model system to demonstrate the software tool, showing that it can be readily used in complex spectra data processing. Our software tool is open-source, flexible, and expandable. New Software Tool Generates Data Analysis for Complex ToF-SIMS

<p><strong>She has discovered new ways to use nanofibers in the environmental field. Fatma Yalcinkaya is a scientist whose name resonates both here and abroad. More than a decade ago, it was the nanoscale world that attracted her to the Technical University of Liberec from Turkey.</strong></p><p>Fatma comes to our interview right on time, ready for every question. It is clear at first glance that she has a fixed direction she wants to take, but she comes across as very modest and pleasant. Her dedication and diligence is paying off, as she has been among the top 2% of the most cited scientists in the world for four consecutive years across all fields covered by Scopus, according to Elsevier and SciTech Strategies together with Stanford University.</p><h4><strong>Nano-small, mega-interesting</strong></h4><p>Fatma chose the textile industry in Turkey because it was at a high level at that time. She chose the Technical University of Liberec as her Erasmus traineeship. Here she fell under the spell of the nanoworld. <i>"The nanoworld is really small, but also really interesting. I like that it is a multidisciplinary combination of chemistry, polymers, materials or physics. I chose Liberec because it is one of the world leaders in nanotechnology,"</i> she says.</p><p>At TUL she met Oldřich Jirsák, who made the first industrial nanospider. And she was rightly impressed. A nanospider can really be imagined as a spider that forms filaments so thin that a microscope is needed to see them nicely. But this device works much faster and is slightly larger than a human. She and her husband are also partners in research and help each other out. <i>"He is a support for me, even though he accidentally electroshocked me once,"</i> she laughs. <i>"After a grueling day of taking measurements for my dissertation, I still had my fingers on the needle where the fibers are forming. There's a voltage attached to it. And my husband didn't notice and accidentally let electricity into me. It wasn't explicitly painful, but it was unpleasant,"</i> Fatma recalls.</p><h4><strong>Contact between research and industry</strong></h4><p>Before Fatma joined the Institute for Nanomaterials, Advanced Technologies and Innovations at TUL, she tried her hand at working in a research company partly supported by the state, which focused more on basic research. <i>"There was high-end instrumentation, we were given training on the different instruments and could use them. There was also a unique opportunity to publish much more frequently in the top decile. On the other hand, there was also a lot of competition and the pressure was discouraging. At TUL it is different, we can only work on instruments within our department. If we want to use another instrument, we have to find a project that will fund the work on it. But the facilities here are great,"</i> explains Fatma, for whom the positive side of <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://lcms.labrulez.com/companies/319"><strong>CXI TUL</strong></a> is that the people there are very nice and there is a close connection with industry. She sees her research being used in industry.</p><p><i>"I never imagined the direction I wanted to take. I wanted to travel the world and explore. And as a scientist, that's exactly what I'm doing. I really enjoy it, meeting new people or new directions in research. Working at a university gives me more opportunities to start new research. In industry, I am closer to the real application, but starting new research is not so easy,"</i> Fatma lists the reasons why she chose a career as a scientist at university.</p><h4><strong>Who doesn't believe in nano?</strong></h4><p>Pure joy. That is what I feel from Fatma as soon as she starts describing her research on microbial fuel cells. Such a cell is made up of microorganisms from wastewater, and the wastewater also serves as a source of organic matter that is their food. The bacteria convert the food into electrons and the energy in them is further used. <i>"Microbial fuel cells don't just stay in the lab. The system has been used to power a Glastonbury Festival or is being used in Africa as a light source in public toilets by top one of the top scientist Prof. Ioannis Ieropoulos and his team in UK."</i></p><p><i>"I'm always surprised when someone says they don't believe in nano,"</i> Fatma continues to explain her research with amusement. <i>"And yet it has so many different applications. For example, I work on membrane technologies for water purification and reuse. I prepare the membranes myself using nanofibres and they can trap a spesific range spectrum of substances, even microplastics or oily substances. So I am bringing my knowledge about nanomembranes there. It's a project more focused on sharing experiences, but because we are also working with companies, we know which problems are burning the industry and what else we have to work on. I think if the science stays behind closed doors, there's no point. I'm very much in favour of open science, open science facilitates the exchange of knowledge and contributes to the development of science internationally. At the moment I am busy preparing the </i><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://sites.google.com/view/electrospinningworkshop2024/home"><i><strong>workshop</strong></i></a><i>,"</i> Fatma concludes.</p><h4><strong>Czech family</strong></h4><p>And where does Fatma see herself in five years? Again at CXI TUL. She is simply happy here, perhaps because she received a really warm welcome at the beginning. Her thesis advisor picked her up at the airport and brought her to the room she was to share with her roommate. He helped her with her luggage and prepared a few essentials for the kitchen so that she could prepare a meal. <i>"My roommate thought he was my dad. And indeed, in reality, my dissertation advisor and his wife became my Czech family.
