Plenary Speakers
Snapshots of an evolving planet from noble gases
- Rita Parai
- Monday 13 July
Rita Parai is an associate professor at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. She is an isotope geochemist who uses noble gases to study the Earth’s deep interior. Her research focuses on volatile origins and the transport of volatiles between planetary interiors and surface reservoirs over time. Members of her research group make high precision measurements of noble gas isotopic compositions in rocks and use these data to constrain numerical models of isotopic evolution to trace volatile accretion, volcanic outgassing, and influx of surface volatiles into the interior in association with plate tectonics. A native of Buffalo, New York, she has an abiding love for cold weather and doomed sports teams.
One Planet, Many Cultures: Science, Storytelling, and Shared Action
- Cristina Mittermeier
- Tuesday 14 July
Cristina “Mitty” Mittermeier is a renowned photographic artist whose work sits at the confluence of beauty, advocacy, and storytelling. With a background in marine biology and over three decades behind the lens, she has created a singular body of work that illuminates the interdependence of humanity and the natural world. She studied marine ecosystems primarily within the Yucatan and documented their biodiversity, witnessing firsthand the impact of human activities on the environment and instilling in her a sense of responsibility to protect the ocean’s delicate ecosystems. However, it was her foray into photography, discovered later in life, that would become the transformative force in her conservation efforts. Recognizing the power of visual storytelling, Mittermeier sought to bring attention to environmental issues through compelling imagery. She co-founded the International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP), uniting photographers and filmmakers to promote environmental conservation. Along with her life partner, photographer Paul Nicklen, she co-founded SeaLegacy, a nonprofit inspiring global action for marine conservation. Mittermeier collaborates with Indigenous communities and organizations worldwide to develop ocean conservation initiatives and share the story of our living planet with millions. Her photographs appear in prestigious publications like National Geographic, Time, and Smithsonian Magazine. Through her photography, advocacy, and dedication, she has become a visionary conservationist, reshaping our connection with nature.
Hydrobiogeochemistry and health risks of geogenic contaminants in groundwater systems
- Yanxin Wang
- Wednesday 15 July
Yanxin Wang has been a full professor of Hydrogeology and Environmental Engineering at CUG since 1994 and was elected as Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2019. In more than 30 years, he and his group have been actively involved in studying the coupled hydro-biogeochemical processes controlling the occurrence, transport and fate of geogenic contaminants such as arsenic, fluoride, iodine, ammonium, phosphorus, and uranium in typical aquifer systems across China, and to develop cost-effective technologies of site remediation, so as to provide theoretical and technological support for safe supplies of drinking water. He was the recipient of Applied Hydrogeology Award of IAH (International Association of Hydrogeologists) in 2019, John Hem Award of NGWA (National Ground Water Association) of the United States in 2019, and Vernadsky Medal of IAGC (International Association of Geochemistry) in 2025.
What the Deep Interiors of Earth and Mars Reveal About Planet Formation
- Dan Frost
- Thursday 16 July
Dan Frost is Chair of Experimental Geosciences at the Bayerisches Geoinstitut of the University of Bayreuth in Germany. As an experimental petrologist, he studies the nature of Earth’s deep interior and the processes that shape planetary formation. His work uses high-pressure and high-temperature experiments on minerals, rocks, and melts to interpret geochemical and geophysical observations. In particular, his research focuses on redox processes in Earth’s interior and their influence on the deep volatile cycle. By measuring mineral elastic properties at extreme conditions, he aims to constrain the composition of Earth’s deep, inaccessible layers through interpretations of seismic wave velocities. Dan received his PhD in Earth Sciences from the University of Bristol and joined the Bayerisches Geoinstitut in 1997 after two years at the Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution of Washington. He is currently President of the European Association of Geochemistry and in 2016, he received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize from the German Research Foundation.
