Understanding the Characteristics That Shape Composite Performance

Program
  • Composite design and structure
  • Ideal thermal techniques for studying composites
  • Application examples using DSC, TGA, TMA, and DMA
  • Which technique for which type of analysis?
  • Interactive Q&A session

Modern composites comprise two or more distinct materials, which are combined to form a new material with unique properties. The properties of a well-designed composite are superior to those of the individual components, such as low weight, stiffness, and longevity.

Performance is a critical factor. Therefore, understanding how the material behaves under stress is key to research, development, and quality control. Thermal analysis is a powerful tool for helping to understand such behavior.

Join our upcoming webinar to find out how thermal analysis is used for the development and routine testing of modern, polymer-based, composite materials. Understand your materials and boost your thermal analysis knowledge!

What Is a Composite Material?

A composite comprises two or more constituent materials combined together on a macroscopic scale to form a new material. The individual components remain separate and distinct within the finished composite material. The functional properties of the composite are, however, better than those of the individual constituents. For example, higher stiffness in a polymer is achieved by incorporating reinforcing fibers.

Due to their light weight and superior performance, composites are used in a diverse range of industries. This includes renewable energy, transport, aerospace, construction, electronics, sporting-goods, medical, music, and many others.

Why Is Thermal Analysis Essential for Characterizing Composites?

Techniques such as DSC, TGA, TMA, and DMA can measure composite properties and behavior across a temperature range of −150 to 1600 °C. Using just a few milligrams of sample, you can determine critical information including Tg, melting temperature, curing reactions, composition, activation energy (ASTM E1641), thermal endurance (ASTM E1877), expansion behavior, delamination, and stiffness.

Understanding these properties is crucial in both research and quality control settings across various industries.

Don’t miss this opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge on characterizing these state-of-the-art materials. Register now to secure your spot, and be sure to prepare your questions for our experts!

Presenter: Nicolas Fedelich

With a background in chemical engineering, Nicolas joined METTLER TOLEDO in 2009 as an application specialist for thermal analysis. Before that, he gained expertise in different laboratories implementing, developing, and validating analytical methods in both the pharmaceutical and environmental fields. Nicolas also worked for three years in the field carrying out on-site customer training and providing expert thermal analysis application support. In his present position, Nicolas expertly uses, teaches, and supports DSC, TGA, TMA, and DMA instruments at the METTLER TOLEDO head office in Switzerland.
