Thermo Fisher Scientific: Delivering productivity in elemental analysis of food and consumer products using innovative solutions in ICP-MS

Food and consumer goods safety and quality control is a topic of prime importance for government authorities as well as analytical testing laboratories. Trace elements, in particular toxic metals, have been in focus for many years, with applicable regulations trending towards lower limits.

Laboratories performing the analysis of food and consumer products usually target a range of potentially toxic as well as nutritional elements at varying concentrations in a wide variety of sample matrices. To ensure productive operation in the laboratory, ideally all sample types, from dry foodstuffs to beverages to cosmetics, would need to be analyzed using a simple and straightforward method, with short sample turnover times, ideally no QC failures, and reduced requirements for instrument maintenance.

The Thermo Scientific™ iCAP™ MX series ICP-MS includes the latest developments in ICP-MS technology that help to address typical challenges limiting productivity and provides accurate data for any sample type. This webinar will present simplified workflows for the analysis of a wide variety of food samples, tested over extended time periods.  The presentation will also deep dive into the analysis of cosmetic products and demonstrate how to handle commonly encountered interferences in ICP-MS using single and triple quadrupole technology.

Key learning objectives

  • Discover opportunities to simplify your workflows for the analysis of food and consumer goods
  • Learn ways to increase productivity and throughput with reduced sample preparation and maintenance efforts
  • Understand how triple quadrupole ICP-MS allows you to produce accurate data regardless of the sample matrix

Presenter: Dr. Sukanya Sengupta (Application Specialist, Thermo Fisher Scientific)

Sukanya Sengupta completed her masters in Geosciences in Kolkata, India in 2011. Sukanya then moved to Göttingen, Germany in 2012 for her PhD and Post-Doctoral research on understanding early Earth processes using oxygen isotopes. Sukanya joined Thermo Fisher Scientific in Bremen in 2020 as Application Specialist for ICP-OES and ICP-MS where her role includes assisting customers in their daily laboratory routines for trace elemental analysis. She is engaged in developing new methods and applications, on a variety of different sample types, that fulfil industry as well as research requirements.

Presenter: Laurent Naels (Sr Product Applications Specialist, TEA, Thermo Fisher Scientific)

Laurent Naëls joined Thermo Fisher Scientific in 2014 as a Sales Support Specialist to assist customers in their daily analysis of trace elements. In 2020 he became a Product Application Specialist within the EMEA Customer Solution Center. He is engaged in developing and supporting new trace analysis methods and workflows to serve the demands of the food and environmental markets. He holds a master in Analytical Chemistry and Quality Control from the Universities of Pau and Cergy-Pontoise, France. In previous roles, Laurent gained experience in technical pre- and post-sales activities working on ICP-OES and ICP-MS platforms with the objective of supporting the customer journey.
