Thermo Scientific: Trace Element Analysis Using ICP-MS for Environmental Samples, Part One: Regulations and Routine Monitoring

Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is one of the most powerful techniques used in elemental analysis for environmental applications.

It provides the advantages of low detection limits, easy quantification, and high throughput. However, experience and best practice are necessary to best use the technique. This webcast series focuses on both routine regulatory monitoring (Part I) and solutions to improve productivity and overcome the challenges of high-matrix samples (Part II). In addition, we will discuss the use of triple quadrupole ICP-MS to meet the needs of environmental researchers and specialty environmental applications.

The webcast will cover the following:

  • Environmental regulations in both the U.S. and Europe

  • Tips and tricks on EPA Methods 200.8 and 6020

  • Autodilution for productivity improvement for high-matrix samples

  • Advanced environmental sample analysis using triple quadrupole ICP-MS

Presenter: Wei Liu, Ph.D., MBA (Senior Vertical Marketing Manager, Environmental & Industrial Markets, Chromatography & Mass Spectrometry Division, Thermo Fisher Scientific)

Wei Liu is a Senior Market Development Manager with a focus on trace elemental analysis applications in environmental and industrial markets in the Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry Division at Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. Earlier in his career, Wei worked as a scientist in the field of industrial enzymes and drug discovery. Since obtaining his MBA from the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley, he has held a wide range of roles including regional marketing manager, marketing consultant, product manager, and market research manager. Wei earned a Ph.D. in Molecular Microbiology from the University of Illinois at Chicago and completed postdoctoral training at Stanford University. He has 14 international scientific publications and four patents to his credit.

Presenter: Simon Nelms, Ph.D. (Marketing Manager-Europe, Trace Element Analysis, Chromatography & Mass Spectrometry Division, Thermo Fisher Scientific)

Simon Nelms is a former ICP-OES and ICP-MS applications specialist who's been part of the Thermo Fisher Scientific team for almost 20 years. Simon's trace element instrumentation experience covers the whole range of trace elemental analysis applications, with a particular focus on clinical and pharmaceutical analysis. He is now responsible for marketing AA, ICP-OES, and ICP-MS products in EMEA for the pharmaceutical, environmental, clinical, and food markets. Simon holds a BSc in Analytical Chemistry and a PhD in research involving ICP-MS method development from the University of Hull, UK, and is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC).

Presenter: David Bowden (Inorganics Manager, Advanced Environmental Laboratory)

David Bowden is currently the inorganic manager at Advanced Environmental Laboratory in Jacksonville, Florida. He has over 30 years of work experience in analytical laboratories, ranging from environmental to R&D to quality control of semiconductor gases. He has done extensive analytical work using ICP-MS, ICP-AES, FLAA, CVAA, GFAA, HGAA, IC, UV-VIS, as well as numerous wet chemical, gravimetric, optical and thermal techniques. He has worked with a variety of matrices, including water, soil, air, wipes, hazardous waste, pharmaceuticals, food, human tissue, asbestos, and geothermal brine.
