The 19th Czech - Slovak Spectroscopis Conference (19th CSSC) is a proceeding based on a long-term scientific cooperation between Ioannes Marcus Marci Spectroscopic Society and The Slovak Spectroscopic Society. The meetings organized by the former Czechoslovak spectroscopic society (1949 – 1993) in the past and the continuation in this tradition in the form national Slovak and Czech spectroscopic conferences now, since 2008, exist as a joint event.The Czech spectroscopic conference was repeated every four years, while the Slovak spectroscopic conference took place biannually. Joint scientific meetings are now held every two years, alternating between the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The order may change if this conference is combined with the European Symposium on Analytical Spectrometry (ESAS). <h4>The problem&nbsp;</h4>We live in a “global village” but we are all different and we use many different languages to communicate.&nbsp;Even when people speak the same language, the same words may be used with different meanings. See, for example, some different uses of the word “standard” in English – a normative document, a solution of known concentration or even a type of flag.&nbsp;Even in the same area of activity misunderstandings do occur which may result in a waste of time and money, or even worse consequences.&nbsp;When talking about laboratory tests, lack of a full understanding of key terms and inappropriate translations leaves room for different interpretations of stated requirements. For example, there have historically been a number of different but related uses of the term ‘detection limit’. This may lead to inadequate fulfilment of those requirements, thus becoming an obstacle to the production of analytical data that is fit for its intended use. A shared interpretation of concepts related to quality in measurement between laboratories and accreditation bodies is also crucial for a fair and harmonised approach to laboratory assessment across the world.&nbsp;<h4>A common language&nbsp;</h4>We need a common language; clear and unambiguous. We need a common vocabulary to provide consistent definitions of concepts with their associated terms. To this end, several organisations participate in a joint effort to develop and maintain an international vocabulary of metrology (VIM) [1], which aims to achieve a unique understanding of concepts related to measurements across all sectors. The VIM is a normative reference in the standards ISO/IEC 17025, ISO 15189 and ISO/IEC 17043, and is therefore a key document for all organisations seeking accreditation.&nbsp;<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/Eurachem_You_talk_we_understand_The_way_out_of_the_tower_of_Babel_Standards_8d947dbd5f.jpg" alt="Eurachem: You talk, we understand – The way out of the tower of Babel_A common language" srcset="https://storage.googleapis.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/thumbnail_Eurachem_You_talk_we_understand_The_way_out_of_the_tower_of_Babel_Standards_8d947dbd5f.jpg 245w," sizes="100vw" width="1126" height="499"><h4>Is this enough?&nbsp;</h4>For laboratory staff some problems still stand and need to be addressed:&nbsp;<ul><li>Many people are confused about both concepts and terms.&nbsp;</li><li>It may be difficult to understand the “formal” VIM definitions – they are short statements intended to apply to many different measurement sectors.</li><li>Translations into local languages may add to the confusion, e.g. if different terms are used in different sectors for the same VIM concept and the translator overlooks this issue.</li><li>Some substantial changes to terminology have been made in an attempt to accommodate chemical and biological measurements. Some “old” concepts still stand but have new names, e.g. “within laboratory reproducibility” vs. “intermediate precision”.&nbsp;</li></ul>To address these issues Eurachem has produced a guide [2] which provides an accessible reference containing simple and in context explanations of terms most relevant to analysts, with additional examples relating those concepts to chemical and biological measurements.&nbsp;<h4>Do you understand the meaning of these terms?&nbsp;</h4>Are you interested in a quantity or a quality? Depending on the answer, will you use a measurement procedure or an examination? Is method verification the same or less demanding than method validation? Do you need a calibration or just performance verification? Do you have a measurement standard in your laboratory? Is metrological traceability something you worry about? The system employs a dual-stage furnace with advanced temperature control, programmable from near ambient up to 1100 °C, allowing tailored thermal programs for specific applications.During analysis, the operator can define multiple furnace steps and select either oxygen or nitrogen as the purge gas to create oxidizing or inert conditions. Under these controlled environments, carbon- and water-containing components are either combusted or reacted. An integrated afterburner furnace, typically operated at 850 °C, together with a secondary oxidation catalyst, ensures complete conversion of all evolved components.Quantification is performed using infrared (IR) detection, with results reported as weight percent or coating weight (mg/in²). When samples are combusted in an oxidizing atmosphere, nearly all carbon forms are converted to CO₂. Organic carbon is identified by the simultaneous formation of CO₂ and H₂O, producing coincident IR signals. In inert conditions, water and carbonates are detected while organic carbon is generally not observed, enabling selective differentiation of carbon species.For unknown samples, a slow temperature ramp program (for example, 100 °C to 1000 °C at 20 °C/min) can be applied. This approach reveals the temperatures at which various carbon forms oxidize or volatilize, allowing optimization of furnace programs for faster and more targeted quantitative analysis in routine workflows.

Cold mounting materials from LECO include polyester, acrylic, and epoxy resins designed for porous, brittle, or heat-sensitive samples, ensuring easy handling and excellent edge integrity.

Cold mounting—also known as castable mounting—is a metallographic sample preparation technique that uses liquid mounting media to fully encase a specimen. Common mounting materials include polyester, acrylic, and epoxy resins. After the sample is positioned in a mold, a catalyst is added to initiate curing and hardening of the mounting compound.This mounting approach is especially suitable for laboratories with lower throughput but a high diversity of samples. Cold mounting is often the preferred—or required—method for porous, brittle, irregularly shaped, or heat-sensitive specimens that cannot withstand the temperature and pressure of hot mounting. The system supports two analytical approaches: residual (total) hydrogen determination and combined diffusible plus residual hydrogen determination when equipped with the optional piercer.For residual (total) hydrogen analysis, a pre-weighed sample is placed directly into the furnace. Hydrogen is released from the sample by hot extraction and carried into a flowing inert gas stream. The evolved hydrogen is quantified using a thermal conductivity detector, and results are reported in parts per million (ppm). Samples are typically collected using LECO vacuum pin tubes or equivalent techniques.For diffusible and residual hydrogen analysis, a sampler is first placed into the optional piercing unit. The sampler is punctured, allowing diffusible molecular hydrogen to be purged into the carrier gas stream and measured by the thermal conductivity detector. After diffusible hydrogen measurement, the sampler is removed, the outer shroud is taken off, and the remaining pin sample is weighed. This sample is then introduced into the furnace, where residual hydrogen is released by hot extraction and quantified. The vessel is automatically lowered into a water-filled bucket inside the instrument. The bucket is sealed using an inflatable bladder, while the surrounding jacket is also filled with water and maintained at a constant, controlled temperature characteristic of an isoperibol calorimeter system.Following ignition of the sample, the temperature of both the bucket and jacket water is continuously measured using a high-resolution electrical thermometer with a resolution of 0.0001 °C. Temperature data are collected every second throughout the analysis.The software allows correction of results for factors such as ignition wire contribution, nitrogen, sulfur, moisture, and ash content when required.
