Laboratory Manager

ALS is currently experiencing significant growth and is actively developing succession plans for future Laboratory Management roles by seeking to engage and develop dynamic and motivated people. Our Geochemistry business has an opportunity for a Laboratory Manager in Stafford, Brisbane, to strengthen the existing team and drive operations. Reporting to the General Manager also based in Brisbane, and supported by an Operations Manager, this role has overall responsibility for the laboratory performance, including financials, Quality, Safety, Resourcing and Compliance.

This is an ideal opportunity for a dynamic, enthusiastic, technically minded individual who has a hands-on approach to Laboratory Management to further develop their career in this field. This role offers an opportunity to gain exposure to a wide and varied range of management disciplines in a multi-faceted Geochemistry laboratory, including staff management, financial management and direct interaction with clients.

The Stafford laboratory is part of the global network of ALS Geochemistry laboratories and is well supported by the Australian Management team, and the Global Specialist teams.

The day to day

The Laboratory Manager is actively involved in:

  • Daily management of the entire operation
  • Developing and fostering client relations
  • Overall quality, safety and site compliance
  • Optimising turnaround time for samples
  • Financial responsibilities
  • Staff recruitment, retention and management
  • Identify regional trends and assist in strategic planning
  • Leading and motivating teams in a fast-paced lab environment

The Essentials:

To be successful in this role, it is essential that you have:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Sound analytical skills for reviewing and approving results and responding to client queries.
  • Strong technical knowledge of laboratory equipment, including ICPMS, XRF and ICP-AES.
  • Demonstrated well-developed, hands-on people management skills with a strong desire to develop, mentor and motivate people will be essential.
  • Formal qualification in chemistry, geology or related science discipline
  • Extensive experience in managing a busy Geochemistry laboratory.
  • Quality control experience
  • Strong safety culture and commitment to upholding high safety standards on site
  • Postgraduate studies in Business Administration would be an advantage, but not essential.
