Which Instrument is Right for Me?</strong></p><p>When analyzing challenging samples, interferences can be a major source of uncertainty in ultra-trace determination of a wide range of elements. Strategies to reduce interferences on these analytes either involve using collision/reaction cells in quadrupole instrumentation to physically or chemically alter the ion<br>beam in a controlled manner to isolate the analyte from the interference, or use high resolution &nbsp;instrumentation to discriminate the analyte next to an interference with a high degree of accuracy.</p><p>With the addition of the Thermo Scientific™ iCAP™ TQ ICP-MS to the Thermo Scientific portfolio of ICP-MS instruments, we now offer a comprehensive range of ICP-MS instrumentation to cover all of your trace and ultra-trace analytical needs. While it is clear that triple quadrupole (TQ) ICP-MS offers benefits over single quadrupole (SQ) instruments, it is perhaps less obvious if high resolution (HR) ICP-MS is a more suitable technique than TQ-ICP-MS for certain analysis. This Smart Note will clarify when TQ-ICP-MS or HR-ICP-MS would be the better option for a particular analysis.</p><h4><strong>2. Shimadzu: </strong><style type="text/css"></style><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/c297_e151_6d34b31ba0.pdf"><strong>Feasibility study of ability assessment using fNIRS</strong></a></h4><ul><li>application</li></ul><h5><strong>Measuring Brain Function in the Aircraft Sector</strong></h5><p><strong>Key Points</strong></p><ol><li>Differences in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) activity between expert captains and young trainees were assessed using fNIRS during two aircraft landing simulations differing in degree of difficulty, utilizing a flight simulator used in actual flight training.</li><li>Expert captains showed significantly higher DLPFC activity in the left hemisphere than in the right one, whereas no significant (n.s.) difference was observed in the young trainees.</li><li>The result suggests that training as an airline pilot for over 20 years influences brain activity, and it may be possible for fNIRS to assist in assessing such abilities.</li></ol><h4><strong>3. Shimadzu: </strong><style type="text/css"></style><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_01_00769_en_44dda64825.pdf"><strong>Analysis of Heavy Metals in Cosmetics by ICP-MS - ISO 21392 -</strong></a></h4><ul><li>application</li></ul><p><strong>User Benefits</strong></p><ul><li>Safety assessment of cosmetics can be conducted using ICP-MS measurements as described in ISO 21392.</li><li>Reduced running costs due to the use of a mini torch that uses less argon gas.</li></ul><p><strong>Introduction:</strong> Cosmetics are directly applied to the skin. Therefore, any Impurities in them must be carefully monitored. The International Cooperation on Cosmetics Regulation (ICCR) recommended limits for Pb (10 ppm) in 2013 and for Hg (1 ppm) in 2016. Regarding analyzing elements in cosmetics, ISO 1392 (Measurement of traces of heavy metals in cosmetic finished products using ICP/MS technique) was issued on August 17, 2021. This test method demonstrates the technique for measuring heavy metals in cosmetic products using ICP-MS. In this Application news, eight elements, including those listed in ISO 21392 (Cr, Co, Ni, As, Cd, Sb, Pb) and mercury (Hg), were analyzed with the Shimadzu ICPMS-2040/2050 ICP mass spectrometer (Fig. 1).</p><p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> Simultaneous analysis of heavy metals in cosmetics was performed by ICP-MS with reference to ISO21392. It was found that the ICPMS-2040/2050 could be used for analysis with a sensitivity that was well within the required value. The recovery test results were good, and the validity of the analysis was confirmed.</p><p>By using a mini torch, the argon gas consumption and running costs were reduced.</p><h4><strong>4. Agilent Technologies: </strong><style type="text/css"></style><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_Na_PF_6_batteries_icp_oes_5994_7609en_agilent_8eaea35159.pdf"><strong>Rapid Assay of Sodium Hexafluorophosphate for Use in Sodium-Ion Batteries by ICP-OES</strong></a></h4><ul><li>application</li></ul><h5><strong>Quantification of 26 impurity elements in sodium salt-based electrolytes using ICP-OES</strong></h5><p><strong>Introduction:</strong> Sodium-ion battery (Na-ion battery, SIB, or NIB) technology is still emerging, although battery packs are already being used in stationary energy storage systems and low-cost electric transport applications, including electric vehicles. China dominates global SIB production, accounting for roughly 95% of the world's capacity. However, interest and development of this technology is also increasing in other regions due to the cost-effectiveness, safety, fast charging times, and long life cycles of SIBs. The production capacity of the batteries worldwide is expected to rise significantly by 2030.</p><p>The electrolyte of a battery facilitates the movement of ions between the cathode and anode, making it a key component that affects the charge transfer properties and overall performance of the final device. Many SIBs use a Na-conducting salt as the electrolyte, such as sodium hexafluorophosphate (NaPF<sub>6</sub>), sodium perchlorate (NaClO<sub>4</sub>), or sodium bistrifluoromethylsulfonimide (NaTFSI).</p><p>NaPF6 is the most widely used salt due to its higher ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability compared to the other salts. However, these properties can be affected by the presence of elemental impurities such as chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn) in the electrolyte. Impurities can also lead to side reactions within the electrolyte or can contribute to the formation of passivation layers on electrode surfaces or current collectors, reducing overall battery efficiency, lifespan, and safety. The detection of trace elements in Na salt electrolytes has therefore become an essential part of the quality control (QC) process in Na-ion battery manufacturing.</p><p>Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) is a fast, robust analytical technique that is widely used for the simultaneous measurement of multiple trace elements in complex battery-related samples.</p><p>However, the presence of many Na and other metal ions in the plasma can affect the analysis of easily ionized elements (EIEs), such as calcium (Ca), lithium (Li), magnesium (Mg), and potassium (K) leading to false high results. To avoid ionization interference by the Na matrix on other elements, ICP-OES is often used in radial view mode. However, radial view mode lacks the sensitivity required for the analysis of trace elements, which is problematic if EIEs are present in the electrolyte at low concentrations. In response to this challenge, an Agilent 5800 Vertical Dual View (VDV) ICP-OES operating in axial view mode was used to determine low-concentration elemental impurities in the Na-based electrolytes. Agilent ICP-OES systems use a resilient, plug-and-play torch configuration to produce a vertical plasma that is especially good at handling challenging matrices, including battery-related samples. The solid-state RF (SSRF) system of the Agilent ICP-OES instruments, operating at 27 MHz, and a Cooled Cone Interface (CCI) produce a reliable, robust, and maintenance-free plasma suitable for high matrix samples, such as Na-salt electrolytes. The CCI deflects the plasma’s cooler tail, avoiding interferences that form in that region and enabling measurement of most elements at trace concentration levels in axial view mode. Matrix matched calibration standards were also used to minimize EIE interferences.</p><p>The 5800 method, which was used to determine 26 analytes in two NaPF6 electrolyte samples, was evaluated in terms of sensitivity, accuracy, and stability. The elements included aluminum, arsenic, boron, beryllium, calcium, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, iron, potassium, lithium, magnesium, manganese, mercury, molybdenum, niobium, nickel, lead, sulfur, tantalum, titanium, tungsten, vanadium, zinc, and zirconium. While there is currently no standard for sodium hexafluorophosphate, many of these elements are specified in the China standard GB/T 19282-2014 for lithium hexafluorophosphate, plus some elements of concern within the industry.</p><h4><strong>5. They can further be separated into small (1 to 1,000 μm) and large (1 to 5 mm) microplastics. Additionally, they can be distinguished as primary or secondary microplastics. Primary microplastics are plastic particles that have been intentionally manufactured for personal care products, such as microbeads, or for industrial applications, such as pellets. Secondary microplastics are small plastic particles created through larger plastic products that undergo weathering and degradation. Current research has shown that secondary microplastics are more prominent than primary microplastics.</p><p>The analytical process for extracting microplastics from various matrices typically involves sample collection, sample preparation, and instrumental analysis. Each of these steps presents an opportunity for the introduction or loss of microplastics. This highlights the importance of robust sample preparation methods, quality assurance, and quality control (QA/QC) measures. QA/QC practices allow researchers to assess the reliability of data.</p><p>The success of any spectroscopic analysis of microplastic particles relies on the effectiveness of the sample preparation procedure. Inadequate or improper preparation can introduce errors into the analysis, resulting in unreliable data. Whether using infrared (IR) or Raman microscopy, it is essential to isolate microplastic particles and distribute them discretely on a substrate for analysis. The more complex the matrix, the more extensive the preparation required. Standardizing sample preparation methods is crucial for enabling the comparison of results across different studies.</p><p>This guide covers key aspects of sample preparation to ensure accurate and standardized characterization of microplastics relevant to the Agilent 8700 Laser Direct Infrared (LDIR) chemical imaging system. This Application News presents a case study of measuring stainlike deposits found on the surface of metal machined partsfor the transportation industry using the infrared-Raman microscope AIRsight.</p><p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p><p>The analysis of stain-like deposits discovered on the surface of metal machined parts for the transportation industry using AIRsight was introduced. Raman spectroscopy allowed the qualitative identification of the stain components, which was difficult with infrared spectroscopy due to the surface's unevenness. AIRsight is very useful for the qualitative analysis of unknown samples by allowing rapid switching and measurement of both infrared and Raman spectroscopy without moving the sample. Additionally, it can measure thick samples like metal machined parts non-destructively.</p><h4><strong>3. Monoethanolamine-triazine (MEA-triazine) is one of the most used scavengers for H<sup>2</sup>S. Industrially, there are many challenges in measuring MEA-triazine concentration in aqueous solutions. This application note aims to develop a mid-infrared (mid-IR) method using an Agilent DialPath transmission module to measure the concentration of MEA-triazine in aqueous solutions. The analytical method described meets the requirements for quantifying MEA-triazine with different solvents, providing time savings, ease of use, and reduced susceptibility to pipetting errors due to viscosity.</p><p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p><p>The Agilent Cary 630 FTIR spectrometer with DialPath module proves to be a highly effective, accurate, and user-friendly method for the quantitative analysis of MEA-triazine in aqueous solutions. The technique's excellent linearity and robustness against additives such as MeOH and IPA highlight its reliability. The DialPath module's innovative design simplifies the measurement process, enhances sample throughput, and reduces common issues such as leaks and air bubbles. This method offers a significant improvement over traditional analytical techniques, providing a practical solution for both field and laboratory measurements in the oil and gas industry.</p><h4><strong>4. Metrohm: </strong><style type="text/css"></style><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_nir_122_download_da32ea61a1.pdf"><strong>Quantification of water in lactose with the OMNIS NIRS Analyzer</strong></a></h4><ul><li>application</li></ul><h5><strong>Fast, non-destructive determination of water with NIRS</strong></h5><p>Lactose is an important pharmaceutical product. Approximately 60% to 70% of pharmaceutical dosage forms contain lactose [1], and it is one of the largest pharmaceutical excipients by volume. Lactose can be used as a bulk filler for pharmaceutical tablets, as a binder to provide more strength to a dosage form, and it can also be added to facilitate the flow of a formulation during the production process. Moisture in lactose is undesirable at high levels as it causes the material to become sticky and bind to itself, forming hard clusters that may be difficult to break apart. USP specifies the water content range in lactose monohydrate from 4.5 % to 5.5 % [2]. The analysis of water in lactose is usually done with time-consuming methods. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a faster alternative. This Application Note shows the determination of water content in lactose with NIRS.</p><p><strong>CONCLUSION</strong></p><p>This Application Note demonstrates the feasibility to determine water content in lactose quickly and easily. NIR spectroscopy offers users a fast, cost-effective, and highly accurate alternative to other standard testing methods. Additionally, NIRS analysis is nondestructive, completely reagent-free, and gives results in only a few seconds.</p>

Thermo Fisher Scientific: </strong><style type="text/css"></style><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_002821_tea_icap_ms_icap_tqe_industrial_an002821_em_en_b60acdccc6.pdf"><strong>Analysis of process water from hydrogen fuel cells using triple quadrupole inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS)</strong></a></h4><ul><li>Application</li></ul><p><strong>Goal</strong></p><p>To demonstrate the analysis of process water from hydrogen fuel cells for inorganic trace contaminants with high sensitivity and accuracy using triple quadrupole ICP-MS.</p><p><strong>Introduction</strong></p><p>The reduction of CO<sub>2</sub> emissions is a major task for societies globally as the rise of CO<sub>2</sub> in the atmosphere plays an enormous role in global warming. The automotive industry mainly focuses on the transition from petrol-fueled to electric vehicles (EVs) to reduce emissions; however, the generation of energy and energy-intensive industrial processes are also important sources of emissions. Here, other ways of reducing CO<sub>2</sub> emissions might be feasible, and in the center of current debate stands the use of (ideally green) hydrogen and its combustion in hydrogen fuel cells. Hydrogen fuel cells are one of the key technological developments as there is no emission other than water. In addition, hydrogen can be created using renewable energies and can be transported with low effort due to its low density of only 70.85 g·L<sup>-1</sup> when liquified.</p><p>A typical hydrogen fuel cell consists of two electrodes (anode and cathode) and a polymeric electrolyte membrane (PEM) as shown in Figure 1. Typically, the electrode is made from fluorinated polymers to allow for chemical and mechanical stability and coated with a catalyst. Platinum is the catalyst material offering the highest efficiency; however, it is expensive. To reduce the production cost, improving the platinum coating technology and monitoring potential degradation by means of metal release into the water produced in the process are important. Due to the use of material blends, different trace metals as well as other non-metal contaminants must be monitored.</p><p>In general, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is the preferred analytical technique for the analysis of metals and related contaminants down to sub ng·L<sup>-1</sup> levels. However, non-metals such as phosphorous or sulfur are challenging to analyze using ICP-MS due to a combination of their usually elevated ionization potentials and significant spectral interferences. Current hydrogen fuel cell technology uses mineral acids, like sulfuric acid, as electrolytes with a platinum catalyst on the electrodes (PAFC). Thus, it is important to monitor the concentrations of these elements at low concentrations. Oxygen- and nitrogen-based polyatomic interferences are usually of greatest concern for these analytes, but other polyatomic interference, like <sup>31</sup>P<sup>1</sup>H<sup>+</sup>, may lead to false positive results and must be removed.</p><p>Another challenge is the analysis of fluorine, which is also a key analyte for monitoring degradation of the PEM. Fluorine has the third highest first ionization potential of any element in the periodic table (behind neon and helium). In addition, its only naturally occurring isotope, <sup>19</sup>F, falls into a severely interfered mass range, mainly due to the interferences generated by naturally abundant ions such as H<sub>3</sub>O<sup>+</sup> and peak tailing of H<sub>2</sub>O<sup>+</sup>. To overcome these challenges, fluorine can be measured indirectly after mixing the sample with a solution containing barium. This results in the formation of <sup>138</sup>Ba<sup>19</sup>F<sup>+</sup> in the plasma, allowing the fluorine concentration to be measured interference free via <i>m/z</i> 157. Because of the required setup, the analysis of fluorine has to be conducted in a separate measurement and cannot be combined with the analysis of the other contaminants.</p><p>In this study, a Thermo Scientific™ iCAP™ TQe ICP-MS was used for the analysis. Use of triple quadrupole technology offered superior interference removal and facilitated the analysis of important contaminants, including fluorine, at ultra-trace levels in the water produced by hydrogen fuel cells</p><h4><strong>2. Metrohm: </strong><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/AN_RS_044_download_a7cb58965c.pdf"><strong>Optimize raw material identification and verification (RMID) with MIRA P</strong></a></h4><ul><li>Application</li></ul><p><strong>Validation model transfer increases productivity</strong></p><p>Using a verification model on multiple instruments expands a manufacturer’s raw material identification/ verification (RMID) capabilities by speeding up incoming inspection, imparting flexibility to an operation, or avoiding downtime.</p><p>In a scenario where several operators use multiple MIRA P systems at different locations, the ability of any operator to use any MIRA P to validate a new shipment streamlines operations and allows that shipment to be quickly released to production. In most cases, a well-designed model with inherent sample variability can be built on one MIRA P and transferred to another. In some cases, variance must be added to a training set with a few additional samples. This Application Note describes how a model transfers from one MIRA P to another in order to scale MIRA P usage across an entire operation.</p><p><strong>INTRODUCTION</strong></p><p>Model building (including training and validation set samples, operating procedure (OP) settings, and necessary variance) has already been well-established for RMID with a unique MIRA P [1,2].</p><p>In summary, MIRA Cal P generates PCA-based (principal component analysis) models using Training Set data and Operating Set parameters to verify target substances. Ideally, a model can be created on one instrument («MIRA P 1»), downloaded onto a second instrument («MIRA P 2»), then validated on the second unit and used directly.</p><p>The model must be expanded if the initial transfer does not produce satisfactory p-values or does not pass validation. This involves <strong>introducing variance</strong> in the model and/or <strong>optimizing model parameters</strong> and/or ensuring <strong>consistent usage by each operator</strong> of the instrument.</p><p><strong>CONCLUSION</strong></p><p>The benefits of using multiple MIRA P devices for raw material verification include smoother operations and faster turnaround of products. This Application Note is intended to guide users through model transfer and enable the deployment of multiple MIRA P instruments. From tips for the simplest transfer to tools for more challenging tasks, we want you to be confident in taking your inspection with MIRA P to the next level. This flowchart is a quick reference for the basic flow of operations during MIRA P to MIRA P transfer.</p><h4><strong>3. Agilent Technologies: </strong><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/ab_fentanyl_resolve_raman_5994_7699en_agilent_22a55edc96.pdf"><strong>Fentanyl Detection Using an Agilent Resolve Handheld Raman Analyzer</strong></a></h4><ul><li>Application</li></ul><p><strong>Safe identification of novel illicit opioids</strong></p><p>Fentanyl and fentanyl analogs are highly potent synthetic opioids that were developed in the 1950s as analgesics. These drugs are approved for clinical and veterinary use due to their rapid onset, potency (10 to 10,000 fold higher potency than morphine), and variety of administration methods.<sup>1</sup> However, these highly potent substances are increasingly found on the illicit drug market in North America<sup>2</sup>, where they have contributed significantly to the "opioid crisis" and to a high number of overdose-related deaths. Illicit fentanyls are available as powders, tablets, liquids, or skin patches, and have been found with other psychoactive substances, including heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine.<sup>3</sup> All these material types present a high risk both in their pure form and after they have been prepared and packaged for sale.</p><p>The <strong>Agilent Resolve handheld Raman analyzer</strong> uses <strong>spatially offset Raman spectroscopy (SORS)</strong> technology to identify hazardous materials, explosives, and narcotics concealed behind single and multiple barriers. These barriers can include colored and opaque plastics, glass, paper, cardboard, wrapping, and fabrics. The combination of SORS, high data quality, low fluorescence interference, and a spectral library that is continuously updated with new psychoactive substances makes the Resolve a powerful tool in the detection and identification of controlled substances. As of library version 41, over 70 different fentanyls can be identified using Resolve.</p><h4><strong>4. Shimadzu: </strong><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_01_00666_en_64f8e5df48/an_01-00666-en.pdf"><strong>Evaluation of TOC of Sulfuric Acid using Wet Oxidation TOC Analyzer</strong></a></h4><ul><li>Application</li></ul><p><strong>User Benefits</strong></p><ul><li>It is feasible to quantify low TOC content in 10 % sulfuric acid solution and thereby manage organic contamination within sulfuric acid solutions.</li><li>By using the auto-sampler, multiple samples can be automatically measured.</li></ul><p><strong>Introduction</strong></p><p>Sulfuric acid is one of the chemicals used in the semiconductor industry for precision cleaning of surfaces such as wafers. When the cleaning solution is contaminated with organic impurities, it may not only affect the objects being cleaned but also the manufacturing process itself. Therefore, stringent quality control is imperative for the sulfuric acid utilized in the cleaning process.</p><p>Organic impurities in sulfuric acid can be evaluated by measuring total organic carbon (TOC). The wet oxidation TOC analyzer, which is capable of high-sensitivity TOC measurement, is effective for managing trace organic substances required by the increasing complexity of integrated circuits. This article introduces an example of TOC measurement conducted with the Shimadzu wet oxidation total organic carbon analyzer TOC-V on a 10 % sulfuric acid solution.</p><p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p><p>The capability to measure low-concentration TOC in 10 % sulfuric acid solution by using the wet oxidation total organic carbon analyzer TOC-V is confirmed. When high-purity sulfuric acid is required, as in industries like semiconductor manufacturing, the use of the wet oxidation TOC-V analyzer can facilitate the management of organic impurities in sulfuric acid, offering the potential for its utilization in quality assessment. Additionally, the use of an autosampler enables the automated measurement of multiple samples, contributing to improved analytical efficiency.</p><p>Furthermore, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.shimadzu.com/an/sites/shimadzu.com.an/files/pim/pim_document_file/applications/application_note/21897/an_01-00535-en.pdf">application news 01-00535</a> introduces the combustion catalytic oxidation TOC-L analyzer, which is used to measure TOC in approximately 1 % sulfuric acid solution.</p>
