Agilent Technologies: </strong><style type="text/css"></style><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_v_groove_nebulizer_5994_7788en_agilent_4ae77b4b3a.pdf"><strong>Reducing Instrument Downtime in Elemental Analysis of Lubricant Oils as per ASTM 5185</strong></a></h4><ul><li>Application</li></ul><h5><strong>Run samples faster and for longer using the V-groove nebulizer</strong></h5><p><strong>Abstract</strong></p><p>In this application note, lubricant oil samples were analyzed using an Agilent 5900 Synchronous Vertical Dual View (SVDV) inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) coupled with an Agilent Advanced Valve System 6 (AVS 6) and the Agilent V-groove nebulizer to enable the rapid analysis of over 1,000 samples in 6 hours (more than 160 samples per hour). The V-groove nebulizer provides exceptional performance characteristics, robustness, and durability, even when using troublesome samples. It also provides a reduction in sample loading on the plasma, which reduces carbon formation on the injector of the torch, allowing extended run times, while exceeding the sensitivity requirements required for the ASTM D5185-18 standard method.</p><p><strong>Introduction</strong></p><p>Elemental analysis of lubricant and hydraulic oils is essential for predictive and preventive maintenance, as well as trend analysis in many heavy industries. The ASTM D5185‑18 standard method1 is the gold standard in tribology laboratories globally to quantify additive elements, wear metals, and contaminants. This method uses ICP-OES for the rapid elemental determination of 22 elements in both used and unused lubricating and base oils, providing quick screening of used oils for signs of wear.</p><p>Tribology laboratories typically process hundreds of samples daily; therefore, they are constantly searching for ways to enhance efficiency and improve sample throughput. Instrument downtime caused by blockages in the sample introduction system (SIS) can be a common problem in these high-throughput labs. These blockages are typically caused by suspended particles in the samples blocking the nebulizer, and carbon deposits blocking the injector of the torch. Although various methods exist to remove the blockage from the nebulizer and clean the torch, all require extinguishing the plasma to remove and clean the SIS.</p><p>The use of a robust nebulizer is a strategy that can enable tribology laboratories to run more samples with reduced blockage. This will improve their workflows and increase sample throughput, reducing both instrument downtime and their running costs. One example of a robust nebulizer that helps to overcome the blockage issues is the inert, high-total-dissolved-solids (high-TDS) Agilent V-groove nebulizer, which is capable of aspirating highly dissolved solids and slurries (up to 30% dissolved solids with a maximum particle size of 350 μm). Its inert construction also ensures that any solvent can be nebulized.</p><p>In this application note, used diesel engine lubricant oil samples were analyzed using the 5900 SVDV ICP-OES coupled with the AVS 6 and the V-groove nebulizer, following the ASTM D5185-18 standard method.&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p><p>This application note shows the suitability of the Agilent 5900 SVDV ICP-OES used with the Agilent AVS 6 and inert V-groove nebulizer for rapid multi-element analysis of used lubricant oil samples using the ASTM D5185-18 standard method.</p><p>Excellent long-term stability was demonstrated when more than 1,000 samples were analyzed over a six-hour period (22 to 23 seconds per sample). All measurements of this spiked oil sample were within ± 10% of the expected value, with precision better than 5% RSD in most cases. The spike recovery study showed how the 5900 ICP-OES, used with the inert V-groove nebulizer, can accurately detect low range concentrations of wear metals and high concentrations of the elements from the additive package in a single analysis. The inert V-groove nebulizer also enabled the samples to be run faster, with excellent accuracy.</p><p>Despite no oxygen injection being used, there were no signs of blockage of the injector of the torch, or carbon deposition after the test. The V-groove nebulizer design reduces sample loading on the plasma, minimizing carbon buildup while maintaining the sensitivity required for the ASTM D5185 standard method. No nebulizer blockage was experienced while collecting the data for this study. The inert V-groove nebulizer allows extended run times by reducing the frequency of torch and nebulizer maintenance. This demonstrates the stability of the 5900 ICP-OES and the suitability of the inert V-groove nebulizer for high-throughput tribology laboratories, by reducing instrument maintenance downtime and improving sample throughput.</p><h4><strong>2. Thermo Fisher Scientific: </strong><style type="text/css"></style><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/pn_002807_tea_icp_ms_halogens_wpc_2024_pn002807_en_b235f7ba82.pdf"><strong>WPC: Sensitive and interference free analysis of halogens using triple quadrupole ICP-MS</strong></a></h4><ul><li>Poster / WPC</li></ul><p><strong>ABSTRACT</strong></p><p>The analysis of halogens is important in many different industries, such as environmental monitoring, pharmaceutical, oil and gas, but also Li-ion battery and renewable fuels. Halogen analysis is commonly carried out using ion chromatography (IC), whereas argon plasma-based techniques like ICP-MS are less common, due to poor sensitivitiy, and potential spectral interferences. This study describes a complete analytical workflow using the Thermo Scientific™ iCAP™ TQe ICP-MS for the accurate and precise quantification of challenging halogen analytes like fluorine, chlorine, and bromine.</p><p><strong>CONCLUSIONS</strong></p><p>This work highlights how triple quadrupole ICP-MS systems, such as the iCAP TQe ICP-MS, operated in TQ-O 2 mode can be used for accurate and precise quantification of challenging analytes such as halogens.</p><ul><li>It could be shown that chlorine and bromine can be analyzed directly using optimized instrument conditions.</li><li>It further highlights the feasibility of iCAP TQe ICP-MS for indirect but accurate and precise determination of fluorine by following approach of complex formation with barium under optimized and controlled conditions</li><li>The analytical data and observations made during this study strongly suggest that iCAP TQe ICP-MS equipped with dedicated mass flow controllers (MFCs) for introduction of pure oxygen and pure helium as cell gases is a powerful tool to accomplish the otherwise challenging analysis of halogens.</li><li>Upcoming studies will focus on the application of the fluorine measurements in hyphenated techniques, such as liquid chromatography hyphenated to ICP-MS to assess the potential for emerging contaminant screening, i.e. of PFAS</li></ul><h4><strong>3. Shimadzu: </strong><style type="text/css"></style><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_01_00772_en_4935e06938.pdf"><strong>Analysis of Elemental Impurities in Anode Materials for Lithium-Ion Secondary Batteries Using the ICPE- 9820</strong></a></h4><ul><li>Application</li></ul><p><strong>User Benefits</strong></p><ul><li>Elemental impurities in the anode materials of lithium-ion secondary batteries can be measured.</li><li>Even after measurement, elements and wavelengths can be added to check for unexpected elemental impurities in the anode materials.</li><li>The system uses a mini torch that consumes less argon gas, thus reducing running costs.</li></ul><p><strong>Introduction</strong></p><p>Lithium-ion secondary batteries (LIBs) are widely used in mobile devices, electric vehicles, hybrid cars, and more. One of the components of LIBs, the anode, accumulates and releases Li ions during charging and discharging. Graphite-based materials are mainly used as the anode material in LIBs. In China, one of the major producers, the analysis of elemental impurities in graphite, which is used as LIB anode material, is required by GB/T 24533-20191) using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES).</p><p>In this Application News, elemental impurities in LIB anode materials were analyzed using the ICPE-9820. Spike recovery tests were performed to confirm the validity of the analytical values. Additionally, the “Acquisition for All Wavelength” feature allows for checking the presence of elemental impurities that were not subjected to quantitative analysis.</p><p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p><p>In this Application News, an analysis of elemental impurities in LIB anode materials was performed using the ICPE-9820. Good spike recoveries were obtained, confirming the accuracy of the analysis. Additionally, elements and wavelengths were added after the measurement to identify elemental impurities other than the analyzed elements present in the anode materials.</p><h4><strong>4. Metrohm: </strong><style type="text/css"></style><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_pan_1064_download_39b556efd8.pdf"><strong>Monitoring complexing agents in galvanic baths inline with Raman spectroscopy</strong></a></h4><ul><li>Application</li></ul><p><strong>The main purposes of galvanic process baths include the surface refinement of workpieces and the setting of physical properties. To this end, bath additives (e.g., organic compounds or complexing agents) are regularly added in different amounts, depending on the processing load. Since the bath composition changes continuously due to the introduction of the workpieces, close monitoring of the concentration of the bath additives is necessary to ensure that the end product quality is at the highest level.</strong></p><p>This Process Application Note presents a method to accurately analyze complexing agents inline in galvanic baths with a 2060 Raman Analyzer from Metrohm Process Analytics. This enables real-time bath control and thus an increase in production efficiency and product quality.</p><p><strong>CONCLUSION</strong></p><p>Raman spectroscopy is an easy-to-use analytical technique that identifies liquids and solids within seconds. Bruker: </strong><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/AN_M57_Lubricating_Oil_Analysis_EN_a8d3b3f7f4.pdf"><strong>Used Lubcricating Oil Analysis by FT-IR: An Overview</strong></a></h4><ul><li>Application</li></ul><p><strong>Oil analysis by FT-IR is a simple method to detect dilution, degredation or illegal additives in all types of oils.</strong></p><p>Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy utilizes the interaction of invisible infrared radiation and matter. This yields valuable molecular information and allows the identification of chemicals in a few seconds without consumables or additional chemicals.</p><p>Generally, this can be used on solids, liquids and gases and of course industrial oils. This method has been widely accepted and is used by automotive industries, drilling companies, legal authorities and even at F1-racing events.</p><p><strong>Why are in-service lubricating oils tested?</strong></p><p>To readily assess the lubricant’s performance, testing and diagnosis of oils in-service is necessary. This is especially important to prolong engine life and avoid sudden and unforeseen damages to the engine. Lubricating oils reduce friction and protect the engine’s moving parts from wear and corrosion. In diesel engines, the oil must also suspend soot particle resulting from incomplete fuel combustion to avoid depositions.</p><p>If the lubricant is saturated, performance decreases significantly. The analysis of in-service oils also provides information about engine-related functions to identify component failures or harmful operating conditions.</p><p><strong>Advantages of FT-IR in oil analysis</strong></p><p>For one, the low cost of modern Fourier transform (FT-IR) systems, along with the ability to obtain high-quality data rapidly has made this technique very attractive. Especially in routine analysis, there is a strong demand for for quick results in routine monitoring of in-service lubricant. FT-IR has already started to gradually replace replace various time-consuming and tedious traditional wet chemical and physical analysis methods.</p><p>Therefore, the ASTM adopted a standard practice E2412 titled; “Standard Practice for Condition Monitoring of Used Lubricants by Trend Analysis Using Fourier-Transform Infrared (FT-IR) Spectrometry” illustrating the increased application of FT-IR spectroscopy in this field.</p><p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p><p>FT-IR is a reliable and valid approach to oil analysis, that not only allows you to access a lot of information with a single measurement, but also simplifies the procedure.</p><p>Infrared spectrometers come in various shapes and configurations and Bruker even offers a dedicated used oil analysis kit.</p><h4><strong>2. Thermo Fisher Scientific / WPC: </strong><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/pn_002806_tea_icp_ms_epa_wpc_2024_pn002806_en_699e98e308.pdf"><strong>Novel developments in ICP-MS: How can the analysis of complex samples be made simple?</strong></a></h4><ul><li>Poster / WPC</li></ul><p><strong>ABSTRACT</strong></p><p>Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) is one of the key technologies used for the determination of trace element concentrations in almost any sample type. Following its initial development in 1980, it has seen an unparalleled ramp up, and grew from a high-end tool used in cutting edge research laboratories to a widely-used technique used in many thousands of laboratories across all regions. In 40 years of being available, there have been developments to drive detection limits lower, hyphenation of separation techniques and accessories to allow for direct sampling of solids, increases in productivity and sample throughput, and, most of all, better removal of interferences. This presentation will provide an overview on novel developments in ICP-MS, providing an unmatched ability to tackle samples with outstanding complexity, both in terms of matrix load and interferences.</p><p><strong>INTRODUCTION</strong></p><p>Alongside the technological development, the complexity of samples to be analyzed using ICP-MS increased at the same level, and typical samples run by analytical testing laboratories today require the analysis of matrix levels previously analyzed using ICP-OES. This is particularly true for environmental monitoring, with region-specific standards and guidelines put in place to ensure that soil is safe before any use of the land and to assure that toxic metals are not introduced after anthropogenic activities, such as the release of industrial waste, use of fertilizers, and mining. One key analytical method is U.S. EPA Method 6020B (SW-846), which governs the analysis of soils, solid waste, and wastewaters.</p><p><strong>CONCLUSIONS</strong></p><ul><li>All the requirements of EPA Method 6020B were met during the test period of three days, enabling the analysis of a total of 600 samples.</li><li>The accuracy determined by the analyses of two NIST SRMs further highlights the capability of the iCAP RQplus ICP-MS in delivering reliable data.</li><li>The consistent internal standards recovery of 80–120% observed during the analysis of a mixed batch of typical samples, analyzed in a period of 12 hours, demonstrates the robustness of the system and the absence of physical interferences causing signal drift and suppression or enhancement.</li><li>The highest dilution setting available for AGD allowed the aspiration of up to 25% w/w brine samples and allowed excellent MDLs to be obtained, while eliminating the need for labor-intensive manual sample dilution and accelerating sample throughput.</li><li>Excellent CCV recovery and spike recovery results, as well as stable and consistent internal standards response, were obtained across a batch containing 120 samples of a 2.5% w/w brine solution, demonstrating the reliability of the method.</li></ul><h4><strong>3. Agilent Technologies: </strong><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/an_kinetics_oscillating_cary_3500_multicell_uv_vis_5994_7396en_agilent_58e9769006.pdf"><strong>Kinetics of an Oscillating Reaction using Temperature-Controlled UV-Vis Spectroscopy</strong></a></h4><ul><li>Application</li></ul><h5><strong>Characterizing the Briggs-Rauscher reaction at four temperatures simultaneously using an Agilent Cary 3500 UV-Vis</strong></h5><p><strong>Abstract</strong></p><p>The Briggs-Rauscher reaction involves colored intermediates, with kinetics influenced by temperature. Tracking these color changes is achievable using temperature-controlled UV-Vis spectroscopy. However, the experiment requires efficient temperature control, cuvette stirring, and rapid acquisition speed due to the millisecond timescale of the color changes.</p><p>In this work, an Agilent Cary 3500 UV-Vis spectrophotometer was used to investigate this reaction at four different temperatures simultaneously. The system's fast data collection and accurate temperature control enabled efficient characterization of complex reaction kinetics.</p><p><strong>Introduction</strong></p><p>The Briggs-Rauscher reaction is one of the most captivating demonstrations that a chemist can perform.1 It is an oscillating reaction that cycles through multiple color changes for several minutes, providing a visual example of how chemicals transform in real time (see Figure 1). The reaction involves several chemicals, as described in the sample preparation section of the note. When the reagents are mixed, the clear and translucent solution gradually turns amber before undergoing a striking color change to dark blue. The blue color then gradually fades back to the colorless state. This cycle continues for several minutes until all reagents are consumed.</p><p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p><p>An in-depth investigation of the kinetics of the Briggs-Rauscher oscillation reaction was carried out at four different temperatures simultaneously using the Agilent Cary 3500 UV-Vis spectrophotometer with Multicell Peltier sampling module. The unique multizone feature of the Peltier temperature controlled Multicell facilitated the multizone experiments of four pairs of cuvettes. Each pair of cuvettes contained the reagents and reference solutions.</p><p>The scan kinetic experiments identified chromophores associated with different intermediates in the reaction, enabling the selection of the most suitable wavelength (610 nm) for single point kinetic measurements of the oscillating reaction. The kinetic measurement results at four temperatures (5, 10, 20, and 30 °C) showed that the oscillating cycle shortened with increasing temperature. To better understand the effect of each temperature on the Briggs-Rauscher oscillation, the data were used to build an Arrhenius plot. The plot was then used to calculate the activation energy, resulting in a calculated value of 58 kJ/mol for the overall reaction. The Cary 3500 UV-Vis spectrophotometer with Multicell Peltier sampling module saves time, while producing valuable data that contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of complex reactions.</p><h4><strong>4. Particularly, the adverse effects of increased heavy metal concentrations in wastewater and the potential effects on human, animal and plant health are of significant concern. Therefore, monitoring these elements in wastewater is one of the most frequently performed environmental analyses.</p><p>The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency published EPA Method 6020B to control 23 metals in environmental water using ICP-MS. In this Application News, 23 elements in wastewater were analyzed using the ICPMS-2050. Analytical samples’ spike recovery tests and long-term stability tests were performed in accordance with the quality control (QC) requirements of EPA Method 6020b.</p><p><strong>Summary</strong></p><p>An ICPMS-2050 was used to analyze 23 elements in wastewater following U.S. EPA Method 6020B. All the analyses met the QC requirements of EPA Method 6020B, confirming the analytical method’s usefulness.</p><p>IDLs obtained in this analysis were sufficiently low compared with the standard values of each regulation for wastewater analysis, and high-sensitivity analysis was realized. In the spike recovery test with SIC solution and samples, good recoveries were obtained, confirming the accuracy of ICPMS-2050.</p><p>In the long-term stability test, the CCV recoveries of all the analytes were within 90 to 110 %. Furthermore, the fluctuation of all internal standards with respect to the intensity during the initial calibration was within the QC requirements of EPA Method 6020B, indicating the high stability of the ICPMS-2050 system.</p><p>The ICPMS-2050 mini-torch system provides accurate analysis, high stability, low argon gas consumption and low running costs.</p>

Agilent Technologies: </strong><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/5991_9342_EN_cost_of_ownership_icp_ms_technicaloverview_356e0d35f4.pdf"><strong>Critical Factors Affecting Cost-of-Ownership of ICP-MS</strong></a></h4><ul><li>Technical note</li></ul><p><strong>ICP-MS in high-throughput commercial laboratories</strong></p><p>ICP-MS is the technique of choice for metals laboratories, due to its unique combination of full coverage for all regulated analytes including mercury,<br>low detection limits, and high sample throughput. But not all ICP-MS systems are equally suited to the needs of commercial laboratories.</p><p>Agilent’s 7850 and 7900 ICP-MS systems provide a powerful, integrated solution for the most demanding applications. Software tools, auto-optimization, and method/report templates streamline setup and routine operation, while high matrix tolerance, simple, reliable helium cell gas mode, and wide dynamic range simplify routine analysis of varied sample types.</p><p>In this Technical Overview, we show how productivity gains and long-lifetime consumables contribute to making Agilent ICP-MS instruments the ideal choice for high-throughput commercial laboratories.</p><p><strong>System Suitability</strong></p><p>The Agilent 7900 single quadrupole ICP-MS is optimized to deliver the high levels of performance needed for more difficult applications. As a result, the detector settings and thresholds are set to achieve the high sensitivity typically required in these demanding applications. Even so, for a typical suite of around 40 analytes and internal standard (ISTD) elements, the EM lifetime calculations indicate that a laboratory running 300 drinking water samples per day and operating 20 days per month can expect their Agilent 7900 ICP-MS EM detector will typically last more than 10 years. Even laboratories running high matrix samples with analyte levels between 100 ug/L (ppb) and 10 mg/L (ppm) can expect almost 6 years of operation from their Agilent 7900 ICP-MS detector.</p><p>The Agilent 7850 single quadrupole ICP-MS is optimized for more routine applications, where factors such as stability, sample throughput and low operating costs are typically more important than achieving the highest sensitivity. Consequently, the detector settings and thresholds of the 7850 detector are optimized for extended life with lower sensitivity than on the 7900. This means that the lifetime of the EM detector used in the Agilent 7850 ICP-MS is typically around twice as long as the figures quoted above for the EM detector used in the 7900.</p><p>As well as the lower cost of replacement detectors, this long lifetime also contributes to reduced maintenance downtime, further enhancing productivity.</p><h4><strong>2. Thermo Fisher Scientific: </strong><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/pn_002809_tea_icp_oes_fertilizer_analysis_wpc_2024_pn002809_en_b55bce092d.pdf"><strong>WPC: High throughput and robust analysis of fertilizers using ICP-OES</strong></a></h4><ul><li>Poster / WPC</li></ul><p><strong>ABSTRACT</strong></p><p>Analytical testing laboratories frequently deal with heavy sample loads and a large suite of analytes but have limited time for delivering accurate results. In order to accomplish the desired productivity, short sample run times, robust methods, and minimum instrument downtime are fundamental requirements in such laboratories. This can be achieved with a technology such as inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) because it is traditionally highly matrix tolerant and modern ICP-OES instruments can additionally offer high sensitivity and speed.</p><p><strong>INTRODUCTION</strong></p><p>The developed method measures major and trace elements in the radial mode that covers the full spectrum in a single exposure, from UV to visible range,<br>simultaneously for all selected wavelengths without any additional data acquisition time. The small exposure times, when coupled with the Step Ahead feature of the autosampler, help realize a run time of only 36 s per sample (inlcuding uptake, analysis, and rinse) without the use of a discrete sampling valve. The method has been validated using standard reference materials, spike tests and a &gt;5 hours long robustness test including &gt;500 samples and regular QC checks. The results demonstrate high robustness and reliability, making the method an ideal choice for many different sectors where high productivity is required for anaylsing samples like water, waste water, soil, fertilizer, animal feed quality control, battery components and more.</p><p><strong>CONCLUSIONS</strong></p><ul><li>A quick and simple method with a run time of 36 s per sample (including uptake and wash) for a full analysis of elements present in fertilizers has been developed</li><li>The use of the Step Ahead feature available on the iSC-65 autosampler compliments the speed of the iCAP PRO XP ICP-OES DUO. The combination of both provides the opportunity to reduce sample turnover times further by almost 30%.</li><li>The method allows to achieve the typically required limits of quantifications for commonly regulated elemental contaminants in fertilizers and at the same time it can cover a large linear dynamic range between 0.01 – 20 mg·kg-1 for trace elements and 1 – 1500 mg·kg-1 for elements present in higher concentrations.</li><li>The concept of the application can be easily extended to other sample types, such as soil or wastewater analysis. ICP-MS instruments can also benefit from single mode measurement and the high-speed capabilities of the iSC-65 autosampler.</li></ul><h4><strong>3. Bruker: </strong><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icpms.labrulez.com/labrulez-bucket-strapi-h3hsga3/AN_M167_Oil_in_Water_Analysis_by_Solid_Phase_Extraction_EN_e4f8d41759.pdf"><strong>Oil in Water Analysis by Solid Phase Extraction</strong></a></h4><ul><li>Application</li></ul><p><strong>About oil, grease and water pollution</strong></p><p>Many international legislations acknowledge that the monitoring of oil and grease content of industrially used (waste) water is essential to protect aquatic and human life.</p><p>The 1974 US Clean Water Act mentions oil and grease as a conventional pollutant. This term describes a water pollutant that is amenable to treatment by a municipal sewage treatment plant.</p><p>Wherever oil and grease are handled industrially and on a larger scale (e.g. offshore oil-rigs) their discharge into the environment should be tested.</p><p><strong>Analysis of oil and grease in water</strong></p><p>The current standard methods use highly flammable solvents such as pentane or hexane, to extract oil and grease from water. The extract is then analyzed by gas-chromatography (GC), or evaporated to measure the residue.</p><p>Since pentane and hexane are highly flammable and form explosive gas-air mixtures, the use of these solvents on oil platforms is not permitted. Hence, the wastewater samples are transferred to a mainland lab, which is a very costly and time consuming procedure.</p><p><strong>FT-IR as ASTM approved alternative</strong></p><p>The ASTM approved ”Standard test method for solvent-free membrane recoverable oil and grease by Infrared determination D7575” is a more convenient alternative. Briefly, this method quantifies oil and grease by processing a water sample through an oil capturing membrane and analyzing the membrane by transmission infrared spectroscopy. The membrane material does not block in the infrared range of interest.</p><p>Since this method does not use flammable and hazardous solvents, it can be performed on-site without moving the sample to the main analytical facility. This considerably reduces time for the analysis and enables near-real-time feedback and control for customers.</p><p><strong>Conclusions and summary</strong></p><p>Bruker‘s ALPHA II FT-IR in combination with OSS extractor allows fast, safe, accurate, precise and cost-effective quantification of oil and grease in wastewater at ppm levels in a few minutes. No hazardous chemicals are used in the analysis, no need for chemical explosion fume hoods, no additional glassware nor sensitive balances.</p><p>In addition, FT-IR spectroscopy enables tracing the origin of the contamination, hence providing crucial and timely information to stop the contamination from becoming larger or from happening again.</p><h4><strong>4. Honey has a superior nutritional value and contains a variety of minerals that are minor constituents. Elements such as Cu, Sn, and Zn are essential for normal metabolism in human and elements such as Pb, Cd, As and Hg are considered as toxic and harmful to human metabolism. Mercury (Hg) is considered as an element of concern for major public health by the World Health Organization (WHO)<sup>1)</sup>. Methylmercury (CH<sub>3</sub>Hg) is the most common and toxic organic form of mercury. The source of these toxic elements could be from air pollution, pesticides, industrial waste or natural disaster which goes from ground water to soil and then from plants nectar to Honeybees.</p><p>The potential for mercury contamination has become serious concern to human and environmental health. The contamination of mercury and its conversion to methylmercury is largely depending on the location in which it arrives. If the location is favorable, then the conversion of inorganic mercury to the significantly more toxic organic form of methylmercury happens.</p><p>The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has laid down limits of 1.0 mg/kg for total mercury and 0.25 mg/kg CH<sub>3</sub>Hg in food products<sup>2)</sup>. To meet these limits ICP-MS is widely used as an accurate and reliable technique for quantification. In the present study, one honey sample was analyzed using Shimadzu ICPMS-2030 for quantitation of total and inorganic mercury along with quantification of methyl mercury by coupling ICPMS-2030 to HPLC as a speciation technique.</p><p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p><p>The present work demonstrates the suitability of the HPLC-ICP-MS method for the quantification of inorganic mercury and methylmercury in honey, in accordance with FSSAI regulations. The inorganic and methylmercury forms of Hg were measured accurately at low-ppb concentrations in honey sample using a Shimadzu Inert HPLC LC-20Ai coupled to a Shimadzu ICPMS-2030. The separation of both species was complete in less than five minutes. LabSolutions TRM software can perform LC and ICP-MS measurements. ICPMS-2030 enables quantitative analysis of elements essential for normal metabolism such as Cu, Sn and Zn and toxic trace elements such as Pb, Cd, As and Hg in honey. Excellent detection limits were obtained using Shimadzu ICPMS-2030 with unique mini-torch technology which uses lowest argon flow rates as compared to any other conventional ICPMS.</p><h4><strong>5.
