Flow cytometry – the premier technology for single-cell and particle analysis – is widely used in clinical, industrial, drug development, and research settings. In order to enable quantitative measurements of biological substances such as cells, extracellular vesicles, viruses, proteins, and nucleic acids, measurements must be made precisely and with sufficient measurement assurance.

Ever since the first Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorter (FACS) was introduced, scientists began thinking about instrument and assay standardization. This pursuit continues today. As the instruments evolve and the context-of-use of the data evolves, the standards are also evolving.

In this webinar, Dr. Virginia Litwin, Director, Scientific Affairs, Eurofins, will review the fundamental principles and current best practices for instrument qualification and calibration, assay optimization, and method validation. Updates on on-going standardization efforts from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Flow Cytometry Standards Consortium and the recently formed SOULCAP Initiative will also be presented. Plus, the future directions from the International Society for Analytical Cytometry (ISAC) will be introduced.

Presenter: Virginia Litwin, Ph.D. (Director, Scientific Affairs, Eurofins Clinical Trial Solutions)

Dr. Virginia Litwin is a leader in validation and standardization for flow cytometry. She is the president-elect of ISAC and serves on the CLSI Expert Panel. She is an Editor for Cytometry Part B, and has edited the book, Flow Cytometry in Drug Discovery and Development, and several journal special issues. Dr. Litwin is the 2023 recipient of the ICCS Coulter award in recognition of her contributions to Cytometry. After obtaining a Ph.D. in Virology/Immunology from the University of Iowa, she joined Lewis Lanier as a post-doctoral fellow. Currently she is Scientific Affairs Director at Eurofins Clinical Trial Solutions.

Moderator:  Susmita Jasti, Ph.D. (Technical Lead for Live Cell Assays, Eurofins Clinical Trial Solutions)

Susmita Jasti, Ph.D., is a Senior Scientist and Technical Lead for Live Cell Assays at Eurofins Viracor Biopharma Services. She has over 13 years of experience in flow cytometry and is a member of Society for Advancement of Cytometry (ISAC) and Cyto Women’s Task Force. Dr. Jasti earned her doctoral degree in Genetics from Osmania University in Hyderabad, India, and completed her post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Kansas Medical Center, where she focused on the immunology of pregnancy and reproductive physiology. Throughout her career, she has authored multiple journal articles and presented her work at national and international conferences.
